Dell doesn't even do AMD on their G-series lineup, but I heard they might be introducing it early next year. The moat competitive Ryzen laptop I've seen is the ASUS TUF FX505, but the performance is still below Intel variants.

No it wouldn't. XPS 15 is a very lightweight laptop which is perfect for the tasks you are going to be using it for. This laptop is a powerhouse, and will not be a very nice 'lap-top', more of a portable computer. For those tasks, I recommend you finding something which is a bit less overkill, and a bit more focused on lightweight :)
Battery wattage? Battery life?

Edit: Actually I have the Inspiron 15 7577, but very much same build wise. You might experience slightly worse battery life being the 6 core i7..? Either way don't expect great battery life.

Well that's $1000 i wasn't going to spend gone! Seems like a good deal for what you get. Wanted something to play some casual games like the Jackbox games on the tv out in the lounge room without having to lug my gaming pc out there. This should be great for that.
A 1060 card seems OP for that…
It does, but i'd probably have to spend $500 to $700 on a basic laptop to be able to do that. I get a whole lot more for an extra few hundred dollars.

Screen is fairly inadequate for photo editing so better hook up to an external monitor.

I got the younger brother of this that comes with a 256GB SSD and a 1050Ti and it's an amazing machine so if anyone is on the fence about this I'd recommend it.
You could easily upgrade the RAM to 16GB too for 50 bucks if you take one of the eBay deals.

@badonde: You are right. I would think information in "Tech Spec" section is more accurate. Let's wait and see what we get.
Have looked at this model for months now. I suggest reading up on reviews, specially from US sites. There seems to be throttling issue, needing to re-apply CPU paste, under volting etc.
I have the Inspiron 15 7577 and can highly recommend the following:
1. Repaste - This is a 2 hour task taking it apart due to the chassis design but you need to replace the junk Dell paste. Mine was badly applied and dried out after about 8 months.
2. Undervolt - Relatively simple, just follow what everyone else has done but improves thermals quite a lot.
3. Someone will have to confirm if this is possible on this model but, replace the junk IPS panel with a 120hz panel from Ebay. It'll cost you about $150au but well worth it. I used this one but I think there are a few resellers around.

Lastly, clean your fans and grills once a year to keep thermals in check.

The 120hz panel replacement is veeeeery tempting.
For the 7577 all I had to do was turn it all off (I also disconnected the battery but you might not need to). Pull the screen bezel off with a plastic pick type tool (there's videos on youtube), unscrew and disconnect. Then all that in reverse with the new panel. Did not need any new drivers.
Changing screen brightness was a bit weird for a few days, there was a delay after boot up before you could adjust the brightness, but windows or one of the automated dell tools must have fixed it with a driver update because it was gone within a week and working normally since.
Again, not sure if it will work with this G5 model but… probably?

Its overrated. I did the swap then swapped back.
Newer games will have a hard time going over 60 FPS on this machine and the stock IPS colours are a lot better than the 120hz TN panel.
Which thermal paste do you reccomend?

I know this is a long shot but I bought the Lenovo L340 and have tried to swap out the 1TB HDD with a 240gb SSD. After I did this, the laptop wont boot up anymore. Im thinking I may have inadvertently fried the m.2 that's in it (you have to move the m.2 chip to get to the HDD). Is anyone aware that if a laptop has a m.2 slot in it, it wont boot up if there is no m.2 chip in there or if the chip is faulty?
Perhaps it has something to do with your UEFI settings.
I cant get into the BIOS. Could an issue with UEFI cause you to not get into the BIOS?
UEFI is essentially the BIOS. If you can't get into this you've got bigger problems. A normal hard drive change won't affect booting into UEFI.
You may have inadvertently fried something on the motherboard that is preventing POST/UEFI.

Any opinions on how it performs as a gaming laptop? Just wondering if i should go for a desktop instead. This laptop is a much cheaper option but can i still run the latest games in high res without performance issues?
it's slowly becoming outdated, the graphics card i mean. Everything around it is pretty great for the price. 6gb 1060 should be outdated late 2020 or just after depending on nvidia do with their next series.
You're always going to get much better performance out of a desktop for equivalent hardware.
For example a 1060 6gb desktop GPU performs on average about 20% better in game FPS compared to its mobile equivalent.
Witcher 3 Wild Hunt on a Mobile 1060 at 1080p max settings runs at about 48FPS (I'd deem this acceptable) while the desktop equivalent pushed 58FPS.
All depends on your requirements. If you want to be able to lug it about and want to play games, then a laptop would be more suitable.
I paid around $1350 for this machine 7 months ago. It was a great price then. This is excellent!

I've had one for a year with the i5 and yeah it's not the highest quality machine. But it's pretty solid, hasn't given any major problems and is fantastic for gaming with the 1060. At less than $1k it's an amazing deal, I paid $1300.
I read both of these as well - However It's a little bit confusing when the model on ebay comes with a GTX1060 6GB - You'll see that the first review (the 2018 model) came with a GTX 1050ti 4GB. So it's had to tell if that's relevant in regard to the other aspects of that model.
Oh actually, right down at the bottom of the 2018 review, it does say the more expensive option comes with a GTX 1060 6GB.

Given that faster SSD devices have dropped in price, wondering if there is any advantage in swapping out the 128ssd for a larger capacity PCIe NVMe SSD, and remove the HDD at same time.
Not for my gaming an ssd always beats a normal hard drive so just run the OS and game on the ssd and use the 1tb for storage

I wouldn't imagine you need to upgrade the RAM from 2x4GB (8GB) to 16GB, if you're planning to game at 1080p.
