Cheapest I have seen for this particular model.

ASUS ROG STRIX GL531GT-AL018T

  • 15.6" FHD 120HZ
  • Intel i7-9750H
  • GTX 1650-GDDR5 4GB
  • DDR4 16G
  • 512G SSD
  • 3x USB 3.1
  • 1x HDMI 2.0b
  • WIN10H
  • 2 year Warranty

Was a tossup between this & The ASUS FX505DU (same specs but with R7-3750h + 1660ti for $1360 @ Wireless1) but reviews indicate the latter has CPU throttle issues hence opted for this one.

Decent review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ut6AU90BesI&t=350s

  • FTC? How does the warranty work for this? Post it to ASUS Australia service centre if anything goes wrong?

Can see mixed reviews about the seller.

    • Considering they state genuine Australian Stock (w/ Tax Invoice) - I am assuming the warranty is covered directly by ASUS Australia.

    • Regardless of seller, allow me to add mixed review about the warranty… Had to go to FTA to get ASUS to do anything.

Bought at $1495 late last year, no regret.

  • The Asus TUF 705 for $1,376.19 is a great deal if you're after a 17.3 screen.

    • Yeah, better balance of specs too for a gaming laptop.

      • Was neck-and-neck between the two specs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmNtAS2OPjs was the deciding factor re: the R7+1660ti

        • +1

fyi, the video is basically saying the r7 cpu is a bottleneck for the 1660ti, and that the 1650 would be a better match.

    • Fantastic price.
If it wasn't for their eBay reviews, I would've snapped this up already.

      • FTC seller has a lot of negative feedback!

        • Looks like a classic case of a drop-shipper business. Nothing wrong with that but tasks take much longer to get done.

          • @The Value: Drop-shipper business?

            • @MuddyClear: They don't actually carry any stock. They get an order, send it to their supplier and they ship it to you. Purely middleman.

              • @The Value: Where you getting your information from?

                • @MuddyClear: I'm speculating at their high negative feedback and the type of feedback left by unhappy customers.

                  • @The Value: If we could access the supplier directly would be good :)

                    • @MuddyClear: Not always. I have access to all the big suppliers and they won't give you a good price unless you spend big.

  • how portable is this? and hows the battery life?

    • +1

      ~2.4kg from what I read.
Pretty heavy if you ask me

      • it's not light, but it feels like a 14 inch laptop so to me it's still portable

        • can't compare to a zenbook or vivobook though

Hell, I use a 1.3kg laptop at work, and every time I chuck it in the bag and put it on, it’s a noticeable weight. And the longer you have to carry it, the more that compounds.
What’s more, I don’t know many people that only carry the laptop in their bag. Most people have a bunch of other stuff, like a notebook, cables, the laptop charger, a phone charger or power bank.
          And it all adds up.

With that in mind, a 2.4kg laptop just doesn’t make sense to me.

          • @Rail Rider95: We didn't ask for your life story

  • I think it's still overpriced…$1200 is more like it.

    • Be keen to know if there is anything else out there at that price point for similar specs.

      • I prefer the asus Tuf FX505DT with ryzen7 and gtx1650 for $950. Might be out of stock though…

        • Yeah not only is it out of stock but that model comes with a r7 - 8gb of ram - 256gb ssd which this model more than makes up in the price diff.

          • @ev3nfl0w: True. Just depends on people’s budget. Wish FTC has better feedback as a seller

For gaming isn't the CPU secondary in decision making , the 1660ti would trounce 1650 equipped laptop with much better CPU imo

    • Depends on the game…if cpu bound then you get GPU throttling.

      • Didn't know of cpu heavy ones, thanks for the info, will check those

  • Every laptop thread there's an idiot who doesn't have perspective on price to performance/specs and then says it's not a good laptop.

  • +1

Damn the 1660 Ti version from the same seller is over $400 more! If it were ~150 more I would've jumped on.

    Significant upgrade (+69% according to https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1660-Ti-vs-… )

    • Good find

    • +1

1660Ti is a really solid card, there's nothing in between this card and 1650 atm for mainstream laptops.

Depending on games and settings you like to play I'd say 4 cores/8 threads with 1650 and 6 cores/12 threads 1660ti is the sweetspot.

  • Curious what the battery is like like on this model

    • +2

      I checked a review.

Battery-on time during web browsing and video playback was 4 hours and 48 minutes, while gaming on battery power was just over an hour.

Seems typical for a gaming laptop.

If you want a more well rounded PC I'd go for this,1660ti works well with 9750h

      No OS, no thanks.

not for everyone but took me about 30min to make a usb and boot w10, key is cheap as well.

Saying that I think Asus rog may have the edge on design and build quality. But the new clevo is slimlime, thin bezels and impressive too.

        • So you are paying $250 more for a 1660ti; 256gb less on your ssd hard drive and no Win10 correct?

          • @ev3nfl0w: $163 if the math is correct, 1458 vs 1295. The jump to 1660Ti is pretty massive though and worth if you're already investing a decent chunk in a high end machine.

Relies on people being comfortable creating and installing a windows usb though ;), might be tricky for some.

        • Smart people pay less and some don't even pay anything for certain things like applications etc. Windows 10 for free or cheap like how you did it should be relatively easy for everyone with general computer use experience.

  • The best one at this price!

  • Buyer beware: FTC are terrible. Half the time you will never see your item. They will keep your money, so make sure you pay via a method that offers some refund garuntee (ebay, paypal, credit card).

They will mark your items as sent but never drop them off at the courier.
