My friend bought it at allphones for $750 unlocked, with the new model expected in a couple of months, this is not a good price

You should never buy a phone without a plan (unless you are happy with a $50 phone).

Got my 16Gb iPhone 4 on Telstra when they first came out and it will end up costing me $149 upfront + $49*24=$1,176 which is a grand total of $1,326 - and JB were giving out $100 gift cards for signing up to Telstra. This includes all of the calls, sms and voicemail I need for the 2 years as well as 3Gb of data/month on the best 3G network here.

Assuming we were prepared to pay the $800 (or whatever the RRP was at the time) for the phone itself and full value of the Gift Card, it leaves $426 for the 2 years of Telstra services. Not bad vaule for $18/month - and we get to defer repayments over two years so we can keep the $800 in the bank and earn some interest on it every month. Optus had an even better deal at the time but crappier network.

Why someone would buy one of these outright is beyond me. Just go on a contract and then terminate it early, will still work out cheaper than buying outright!!!

I buy my phones outright and use TPG $9.99 plan works out cheaper for me

      • +1

I bought my iphone outright and using TPG $1 plan, works out way cheaper than signing up for 24 months as I made minimal calls

but agree on the fact that if you are a heavy user and need to make lots of calls, then you should sign up 24 months contract

      • What about data? Do you only use Internet when hooked to WiFi?

        • Tpg's 15 dollar plan gives u like half a gb or more of internet…i think the 10 dollar plan gives u like 200mb? More than enough if you're not youtubing!

      • Just a side note on $9.99 plan.
I just changed from TPG $9.99 to $1 plan. After entering all the plan details into Excel I could not find a single instance where the $9.99 plan was cheaper than the $1 plan, and that doesn't take in the 50mb/150Mb(TPG ADSL2 Customers) data included in the $1 plan.
You may get some included credit with $9.99 but the calls cost several times as much as $1 plan.

      Correction:

Don't buy an iPhone outright, or any other phone that has a fake outright price to entice customers to buy a plan.

If you buy a proper priced phone outright its much cheaper, but you often have to do this overseas, and you can never do it for iPhone.

      • Yes you can. Only in US is locked At&t

As others have pointed out, if you make enough calls, yes, you will end up saving money on a new phone by taking up a contract. Or if you absolutely have to have that super-shiny new phone that just came out, then a contract deal may end up cheaper, or the same cost with more minutes/features. But then, on OzBargain there are penny-pinchers like me who use their phone very little (typically less than $5 per month), and are happy with their plans but would still like to update their phone now and then.

I just paid $200 for a new, outright Android phone, and assuming that nothing changes in the next two years, I will save over $300 compared to getting it on the cheapest 24-month contract I found.

    • What if you already went into a 24 month contract and either lost your phone or broker after warranty during that time?

      • In 9 years of owning a mobile phone, I've never lost or broke one and I was always using a touchscreen phone (back in the days you didn't have a hard screen - had to use a stylus on a fragile surface).

If you are close to the end of your contract, just pay out the termination fees and go on a new one (most telcos will waive these to lock you in for another two years). Or go on 12-month contracts.

For me it's hard to compare Optus/Vodafone (no point in mentioning 3 anymore) to the quality of Telstra and I was prepared to pay a hefty premium for it. At the time Optus offered me 6 months free on their $59 business cap because they stuffed up min cost on their website - I still chose to pay full price with Telstra for their speed, coverage and lack of drop-outs.

This difference will become more apparent when they open their 4G network to the public - my guess is the next iPhone will be 4G so you'll an even bigger performance gap between Telstra and it's competitors (obviously it will apply to android phones and all the rest).

I don't know about most, but I feel good not having to worry how many calls I make and being able to audiostream radio on my phone wherever I am. I guess people on the TPG plans don't value these as much as I do!
