Anyone else find fiji a rip off, i went there once 4 years ago and vowed never again. Meals there are expensive and quility of food is awful. The icing on the cake for the trip was 20%+ goverment tax on hotel bill and departure airport hungry jacks, 2 burgers and a few other bits it was nearly $50 AUD

I think fiji thinks tourist are just walking ATMs

Stay out of the resorts… there's plenty of reasonable accommodation and awesome cheap food in most of the towns and along the highways.

      • Yeah I found food to be cheaper in restaurants and shopping centres than here.

      • Any recommendations?

A few I can give, I haven't been back for a few years but have family over there so go quite often.

In Nadi, as far as food I like the Farmer's Club or Tata's for a good curry / curry parcel, and the Nadi market is really great to look around if you're into food as well. Plenty of cheap eats there. Nadi is an interesting town. There are some cheaper accom around Wailoaloa beach area which is nice and a lot of locals hang out there too. Hostels and up. Plenty of decent bars.

Easy places to go and stay, I like the area around Sigatoka. Plenty of stuff to do, the town is nice, again good markets. Tavuni Hill Fort for a hike, lots of river activities, wildlife parks if you have kids. An example of nice accommodation would be the Sandy Point Beach Cottages. Right next to the Outrigger resort, but rooms are half the price or less and you get your own little place. A bit basic but you can cook yourself, head to Sigatoka, or just go across to the resort if you're out of ideas. I think the beach is nicer next to Sandy Point, less screaming kids around too. You can buy your own booze in town for next to nothing.

To give you an example, last time I stayed at Sandy Point, one meal at Outrigger cost almost as much as a week's accommodation. Sometimes the resorts are okay for room pricing but they charge you through the nuts for everything else. Another option near there is Tambua Sands which is more expensive but also has some more legit stuff. E.g. you can ask a lady called Salomi to take you out to the reef to collect some seafood which she'll cook up for you Fijian style.

Pacific Harbour (Pac Harbour you'll probably hear it called) is next along the Coral Coast and again plenty of options. Since it's not one of the big towns there are cheaper resorts too, places like Oceanus etc.

Suva you have plenty of options, again decent food everywhere and good markets.

If you like going out, Ed's bar in Nadi and Traps in Suva are the classic clubs that most locals hit up.

As for food, all the Fijian-Indian food is great. Fijian style dishs like Kokoda, Palusami, Nama (sea grapes), all the local veg, Kai (cockles), and of course a Lovo underground oven are all worth trying. Plenty of places around do that kind of food.

If you wanna get out to the islands that's a whole other matter. Some are essentially owned by the resorts so you don't have much of a choice. There are villages that will run their own accommodation on some islands too but that might require a bit of research. Likewise many villages on the mainland will host you very cheaply but I acknowledge that's not for everyone and sometimes requires a bit of knowledge to do anyway.

I do hear complaints that Fiji is expensive but my only advice is not to get stuck in the big resorts. It's a whole big country with great local culture, and the further away you get from the places most tourists are, the less trouble you will have with people hassling you to buy shitty souvenirs / expensive food and drinks and experiences.

Most countries see tourists as ATMs to be fair, including Australia.

Yes I think your best off going for an all inclusive package for hotels. Most countries are expensive if you don't live like a local, especially food wise.

      • Any recommendations for all inclusives?

If you want a cheap holiday you need to beat the crowds by a few years - places will always gradually get more expensive as long as it's still cheaper than a domestic holiday. In Fiji especially, they are able to clearly divide the market between local and tourist, and able to charge the tourists heaps more.

If you want good value, go somewhere that is just kicking off as a tourist destination but isn't quite there yet - in my experience both Vietnam and Sri Lanka were good, as they had just enough tourists that they know how to deal with them, but not so many that you want to shoot yourself every time you hear an Australian accent.

  • Hi rep, anything for Easter? I only found flights for $750ish and hoping you can one up me :P
