Panasonic Cordless phone 1.8GHZ Harvey Norman $28 (save around $20)

160

Panasonic 1.8GHz Cordless Phone KXTG1811ALS A few weeks ago they had the same phone advertised at $39.00.

Being a DECT 1.8GHZ it doesn't clash with a wireless network, like many 2.4GHZ phones do.

Searching the web price comparison sites this comes up at $50

  • Been looking for a land line caller id phone.

  • Thanks! I was just chatting with wife at dinner, saying we need another cordless phone as our current VoIP ATA is connected to a corded phone, which ended up not being used…

    • it's worth noting that Philips (and a few other smaller companies) have a few models in their cordless phone range that support both PSTN as well as VOIP or Skype. some of the newer ones don't even require your PC to be running — they connect straight to your modem/router.
thus far I haven't found anything under ~$200, which kills the VOIP savings a little.

      • Good point Kristo. I'd not looked into VoIP in any detail (yet), but a h'set that does PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) + VoIP could be a good thing. As you say though, pity about the price! :-(

        Cheers,
        Live Long & 5cr3w Telstra / Optus(SingTel).

        • With VOIP you can use the same phone ala philips or have a separate phone setup.

Initially I wanted the one handset but like you the initial price put me off.

Personally I now like the two handsets because for me ….

          1. I can have one phone for dialing out. As my Telstra calls cost so much in comparison, using the wrong phone costs me money and even with the two handsets we sometimes made mistakes at (35c pm to a mobile vs 15c a minute this add up). We now have to put a password in to unlock the Telstra line handset, just in case.

          2. When on one phone the other is still available. No such a big deal for me alone, but when others in the house need to use the phone they can.

          3. I found VOIP so great I have two VOIP lines, with free of monthly rental deals (search VOIP on ozbargain) so another handset is required for the extra line. Now there is less need to hang up when someone else wants to use the phone, and with kids talking for hours thats very likely.

          4. It's easy to tell which phone rings. We give out the VOIP number to close family. The other VOIP number when a business needs to call us.

VOIP setup is so easy now the boxes connect into your broadband setup in line between your modem and PC (or better still via a router) and if you get a box from the provider they dont really need set up.

Most likely with the first bill you'll pay for the cordless phone with the savings.

          • @[Deactivated]: Thanks fot that OzPete. This sounds like the way to go. I recall now that a neighbour uses a similar setup - VoIP for o'going calls with w'less h'set - another on the Telstra copper/PSTN for unsolicited incoming calls. Saves using the mobile as the "2nd line" when female householders have the 'phone tied up for hours at a time!!!

  • I have this phone (except I have it the two handsets), it has some nice features and uses two AAA rechargeables - supplied. i use it for my MNF voip service.

  • Sounds sweet. Only concern is that it seems you'd need a 2 or 3 station setup for a house using VoIP connection.

(Yes, I do have a mo')

    • No more so than a regular (pstn) telephone service.

As its cordless it can go where you are, just you will need to dock it every now and again to keep the batteries charged.

Although having 3 handsets means you can have then strategically placed around the house, but again , this is no different from a pstn service.

  • Can you have more than one headset? If I want two or three headsets is it just a matter of getting two or three? Is it easy to "connect" them?

    Alan

    • all you would need to hook up two or more of these is a standard RJ11 line splitter, around $4-5 at an electronics store.

    • I dont think you can do this, after looking at my manual which covers the single, two and three handset models.

While you can connect using a splitter the handsets need a base and a slave, as these buying two of the special (1811) would give you two bases, the units will operate independently so you couldn't use them as an intercom.

If you had phone jacks in various rooms you could set up the base handsets on each jack just like an ordinary phone, whereas a slave station only needs a powerpoint (no jack required)

You want the 1812 (2 line) or the 1813 (3 line) Mynetfone has a special on the two line with their signup service (79.95) https://www.mynetfone.com.au/offers/junesale-2008/. maybe others know of deals….

  • I hate those batteries! My 2 Panasonic handsets doesn't have much talk time.

    • I bought a recharger that refreshes batteries, and one of my panasonic batteries was only 089mah vs its supposed 750mah, after two refreshes its now 742mah and the phone lasts a long time. If you don't have a refreshing battery charger, just buy some more AAA rechargeable batteries and use them.

My refreshing battery charger I bought from Thomas distributing - see this forum thread.

      • Thanks ozpete, will look into it.

  • 1.8ghz is faster than my computer….

  • My local JB had it for $28 for awhile….everyday price…. last time i went in was about a month ago, the sale wasn't even on.

  • I picked up one of these at JB — they had it for $56, but matched the price without a question. one problem that really bugs me about this model is it has no Handsfree/Speakerphone feature.

  • 'Catch Of The Day' have an offer on 2 or 3 station Philips DECT (digitized voice over analogue carrier???) h'sets for $44.80/$59.80 + postage. http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/smallfish_info.php?products_…
The price certainly seems right!, but I don't have any knowledge of the product…
