  • Thanks for the post OP! Just wanted to chime in with a heads up that our sale ends tonight. If you are unsure about whether or not you want to pull the trigger on something, we recommend getting a small purchase (say a Sennheiser 6.35mm to 3.5mm adapter for $13.50 after 10% discount with free shipping https://www.minidisc.com.au/sennheiser-6-3-mm-jack-to-3-5-mm…). Then you will get a 10% discount coupon to mull over for the next 3 months!

We will be sending out the coupons at the beginning of next week. Hope y'all have a great weekend and a good start to 2020.

  • Honestly, given that we can probably pick up good quality planars from China now for under $200 on sale nowadays, this seems like less of a no brainer than reviews would suggest.

For those who are feeling a tad more thrifty, take a look at the Takstar HF-580, which has a great thread over on head-fi:

    https://www.head-fi.org/threads/takstar-hf-580-planar-headph…

Apparently it can be cleaned up very nicely with a couple of tiny mods (literally adding material behind the driver and changing the pads). Uses the same driver as the BLON B20 and the Sendy Aiva, so the sound potential is there if you're prepared to spend that literal extra time and money on it.

    • Thanks for the information on the Takstar’s.
I have been interested in the Takstar Pro 82’s in the past.

      • Still recommend the Pro 82 if you know where to find the v2 on AliE (only one vendor I know of, TakstarAudio). Wearing mine right now.

Looks like the HiFiMAN Sundara is available even cheaper than the LCD-1, arguably a better headphone:

        https://addictedtoaudio.com.au/products/hifiman-sundara-magn…

        • Here’s another mod tip I have heard of:
Cut some old RCA cable to length & put it firmly inside the inner rim of the pads (with the pads attached), of course it can be trial and error but I imagine you can get some ‘enlarged sound-stage’ going on and some alteration to the sound as well.
This also can help with people who suffer from their ears touching the driver (pads too thin).

          • @thebadmachine: Soundstage is already surprisingly good on these by default. They really are masterfully made on such a small budget.

If you've never tried them, I recommend these and the BLON BL-03 for the next AliE sale. It'd be hard to get more out of $90-$100 in audio.

Some good audio on a budget information there.

Then, when you go through your four chifi planars and end up with these anyway, you can thank Ozbargain.

      • Did you miss the part where I linked HiFiMan Sundaras for cheaper than this pricing? Or the part where I said it needs some tweaks and requires someone of a thrifty mindset?

You stick to your one lane mate, the rest of us will use the road properly.

        • Lol. Imagine thinking the ‘proper’ way is recommending headphones that you have to stuff a scrap of rca cable into to fix the fit and the sound. What a burn.

But it was cute how you imply chifiman don’t make disposable midfi cans with garbage QC.

            That wasn't my advice.

I didn't nominate the 400 series, I nominated the Sundara, which is the recommendation right now for best value as a planar. And your use of Chinese production as a pejorative is more than a little odd in the context of modern manufacturing.

The Takstar model probably sits ahead of the 500 series in terms of value, but at a fraction of the cost after a non-invasive series of mods that costs $30. You're silly to think that often the difference between headphones is little more than how they're housed, especially when dealing with OEM parts from China.
