Mercedes Me Bluetooth Adapter - Free For Existing MB Owners

1280

For those with Mercedes Benz vehicles, recently I had my car serviced and was offered a free Mercedes Me Bluetooth Adapter. For info my car (W205 class MY14 build) is 5 years old and out of warranty.

This is a plugin device that goes into your OBDII port and communicates with your phone via bluetooth. Pretty nifty since it picks up all the fuel consumption, speed, location and puts it all in an App (android/IOS)

Doesnt have the full blown features like remote start etc, but its nice for the tech enthusiast.

You will need to create an account on your Mercedes-Benz.com.au and link your vehicle details. The module is apparently free from your local mercedes dealer. With rego and app setup etc it took around 15 mins to setup overall.

Mate had a 2013 B Class and also got this for free after contacting the dealer.

p.s. You will need to have a high yield investment to get this

    high yield investment

    classy bait

  • -8

really useless in my opinion, the only feature i wanted was the remote start and that doesn't work in OZ for some reason..

    any other useful features ?

    • +3

Putting it into perspective, it is free. One of the uses I can think of is the digital logbook for those that need to log their business kilometers. The tracker lists every trip and distance.

p.a The full Mercedes Me is now available in Aus with options for remote start, remote monitoring. For real time tracking there's gotta be like a 4G module with sim card inside.

This is just Mercedes good will thing to give you a taste and push you to get another high yield investment.

      • Wait the add on module enabled remote start? Wow that’s pretty good if it does.

    • +1

I got one of these installed, pretty much useless, compare to the US counter part, they get remote start etc…but hey it's free, probably worth $10 the device.

      • Can sell on Gumtree?

    • You can pay 3k to get remote start installed

  • Got one of these free with GLC as well. It's meant to encourage you to use the app and pay subscription fees for the extra features.

  • +15

Yes, it is free. Installed, 5 mins later unplug throw into my glove box. RIP.

  • Got one, useless for me, very hard to setup.

  • Thanks Op for reminding me my B service is almost due.

    • +2

Shop around for B service, its one of things that lets MB down is the pricing. Got quoted from 1100 to 599 depending on location. Avoid MB Toorak and MB Melb like the plague.

I go out and get my done at MB Berwick.

      • +1

MB Glen Waverley is the new place to be!

        • How much is the B service?

        • I've had my car serviced once with them once. What's your view of them?

        • +5

Had the worst experience at MB Glen Waverley. Unprofessional staff. Spoke to a service advisor to make a booking for service. It was confirmed and when I show up on the day, they had nothing on the system. Did nothing to help rectify the situation. All they could say was make another booking and come back another day.

Ended up going back but after the service, I was asking questions about different service items, the service advisor blatantly lied to my face. He didn't know the technical answers so he just made them up as he went along. I'm a car enthusiast, I know my cars and I work on my own cars, but I still like to take it for an official service once a year.. So I know when they're bulls$#ting..

          Would never go back there.

          • +1

@skysky: Well of course, the ppl with the engineering degrees dont work the service counter.
Customer service is a entry level job for high school drop outs.

            • +7

@t_c: It is ok to not know. It is not ok to make things up.
I would have told the customer I do not know, but I will find out and get back to him.

      • Same , MB Berwick did A service for 599

      • +3

Find a reputable European car specialist. MB stealerships are overpriced and untrustworthy.

  • Got one for my C63. Thanks OP.

    • -5

how's your high yield investment treating you?

      • how's your high yield investment treating you?

I don't know what's with all the negs on this comment haha

Same. Got one for the SLS GT. The guy came out to install it.

      • The SLS and GT are two different cars.

        • +7

Ah… no wonder he couldn't find the socket on the SLS GT.

        • Unless they mean the Mercedes SLS AMG GT: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_SLS_AMG#SLS_AMG_GT_(2012)

    • -3

Should ask about this with my next Mayback service. Thanks OP.

      • +18

        Mayback

Better walk into your 10 car garage and confirm the spelling.

        • CDM version.

  • Do I need to prove rego for all of them? That's a fair bit of paperwork to sort through.

    • You need to register the VIN

  • you guys all got it wrong, as a high yield investment, from a reputable company, they can name it whatever they want, as per this case "Why don't we just call it blueBOOTH ? we could even trademark it!! "

  • Is it national wide? My car was serviced at MB Canberra recently, was not told anything :(

    • I believe yes, no they won’t tell any as they are not getting any

      • Yes it's nationwide. Had it installed mid last year when it came out. Pretty useless though, unlike the one they offer in Europe and USA. Basically reminds you of the yearly service and keeps a fuel log (but always measures wrong and you have to input data manually to get it right). And it helps you locate your car in a car park.

You have to contact any MB dealership for a free installation.

    • I’m not sure because I was told by MB Sydney that it would be available for free of charge until 1 December 2019. I heard some people paying over $100 for it at other locations last year.

  • Are there any ways to get the remote start feature with this adapter?

    • No, unfortunately, it doesn't.

  • I wonder it will send some command to slow or affect the car when it’s approaching service or due to a certain age? Force driver to buy a new car or worn out some parts…..

    • +9

      Only the limited apple edition.

    • No need, already built in for post warranty.

  • +8

Nice, thanks OP. Now I just need to buy a Mercedes-Benz to fit this adaptor. Any deals?

  • +2

I have this in my Merc.

Utterly useless in Australia, but apparently decent in Europe.

I would give this a miss as it provides a lot of personal data to the trustworthy folks at MB.

    • "Free" not.

  • Got one for my CLK GTR thanks.

Too bad the SLR McLaren is ineligible.

    • Ineligible to drive on Australian roads. They are left hand drive only. So good luck with your MB link in your garage.

  • -5

Can't you just sell your MY14 Mercedez Benz and buy an MY19 Kia or Hyundai which will definitely come equipped with Bluetooth gadgets? And you're still gonna end up with some change in the pockets too lol

    • -1

The Hyundai and Kia would be worth more. Not even a joke. lol

      • +1

and built better, my 2015 c class is nothing but rattles.

Once you drive a European car, it's hard to go back to anything Japanese or Korean.

European cars drive a lot better and the power is addictive.

That said, you pay a big premium for it in every way.

      • -1

is this like, once I’ve eaten white truffles I’ll never be satisfied with mushrooms again? In that case, I’ll stay in ignorant bliss, and keep the cash for more important things in life, like being more charitable.

        • +2

          Truffles aren't mushrooms.

          • -1

@AussieZed: Truffles are fungus, as are mushrooms.

            • +4

@AlexF: So? Apples and oranges are both fruits. Doesn't mean they're anything alike. So is a tomato, for that matter. Would you compare a tomato to a grapefruit?

                @AussieZed: Woods and trees.

              • @AussieZed: Difference between knowledge and wisdom ?

Knowledge is knowing that an apple is a fruit.
Wisdom is knowing not to include them in fruit salad.

Lexus is a decent option, got the reliability and semi-luxury…they actually look pretty good too.

        • Toyota's Luxury Export to the US.
          ;)

        • Yes, true. I test drove a few Lexus'. Not as fun, but not a bad compromise.

I'm not sure if they're inexpensive to own, but couldn't be as ridiculous as Mercedes.

If I had been on a budget, I definitely would have looked picking one up.

          • +1

@imurgod: Dunno if I'd call them a "compromise".. Depends on the model / what you're after.
If you're after the badge wank to just have a C200, I'd go a Lexus IS any day. (Disclaimer -> IS250 owner). lol

            • @Maz78: For a C200 and below, you're right, it's not exciting… like the lower spec BMWs. The Lexus, while boring, is probably a better choice.

I think from C250 up is where you'll see the point but personally, I'd be going nothing less than a C350 and preferably a C63 because that's where you'll start to understand understand why someone accepts such a premium to drive a car.

              • @imurgod: There is actually no difference in the engine between a C250 and a C200 W204, just a different fuel map. The C200 has the more efficient fuel maps, thus you can drive it like a little old lady, and actually has some decent acceleration when you give it stick. The C250 map delivers a torquey ride from get go. Yes, there are other differences, mostly with trim levels and gadgets, but gadgets break and will cause you a lot of grief with fixing them when they break.

                • -1

@laser: Fair enough. I haven't paid much attention to be honest.

I have a C63s and during a service once I was given a B200 turbo diesel and it was underwhelming to drive.

That was with the stealership but my mechanic now gives me his M3 or M2 and even his wife's M135i. I'm not a BMW guy, but they are very fun to drive too.

2 of my mates have W204 C350 and those V6 are excellent!

What's scary about the w204 C250 is that issue where the cam chain strips thr cam gears, but I hear MB will pay some of it if pushed.

People who think it's just a badge or that a Korean or Japanese car is as good obviously haven't owned a decent euro.

                • @laser: I don’t know if there’s C350, but 180, 200, 250, and 300 have the same engine. They are just tuned differently.

      • +3

Once Euro and never go back? I call it BS.

  • I have heard of people being charged for these adapters and an additional charge for installation.

I messaged Mercedes Benz Australia regarding this and they did confirm that it is 100% free, I've been meaning to head into my local dealer to pick one up

    • Installation is plugging it into OBDII port, which takes 1 min.

  • +1

free yes. useful, no. not here in Australia anyways.

  • lol

  • Need Audi to follow suit.

    • Might turn a car in working order into constant limp mode. Better not.

  • I'm confused as to why a supposed luxury car wouldnt have such a basic feature

This is a retrofit for cars before android auto/carplay/online connectivity became mainstream.

Current gen comes with this tech standard.

  • +6

So, anyone else who has a car later than 1996, simply look up Bluetooth OBDII adaptor on eBay, and for $5 or so, you too can have the same classy features that cars have had available for the last two decades.

Your phone will record and display the information about your car, with apps between $5 and free, and there's dozens to choose from.

No rego, VIN or fake prestige needed.

    • +1

      Torque is a great app

    • +2

Note that this is good advice as long as you don't have a MB. MB does some whack stuff with the data on the OBD2 port, I have a noname adapter and the data it can see is very minimal and drops in an out all the time, so while it uses the standard port it has some custom protocol or whatever. I've talked to a few different mechanics and they reckon it's to force independent service shop owners into buying the insanely priced star diagnostic thing. Frustrating AF if you want to work on your own car tho

      • Ah, that makes a lot of sense. Shame it's the car owners that get screwed over in the end.
        Thanks for the clarification

        • Well, actually maybe scratch that, my car is just a piece of crap apparently. This is the from the configuration screen in the mercedes me app:
          https://i.imgur.com/KDtMGtX.png

It only updates every 5 seconds or so (not even close to being realtime data), and the "engine load" stat seems dumb. Idling is ~38% load, light acceleration is ~80% load… and it doesn't update fast enough for me to find out what hard acceleration is lol

i had some pretty high hopes, but it's not very useful after all… sucks

    • Can you recommend some yourself?
      Looking to get one myself.

      • Really depends on the type of phone/platform you're using, and what you're wanting to get out of the data, but as someone mentioned earlier, Torque is a good choice.
Other good choices are Hudway Cast and RealDash for driving and seeing what the 'real' speed - note, this will most likely still be 5K/h what you are actually doing, as car manufacturers have introduced this safety margin by stealth.
Check it against a GPS speedometer on a straight stretch of road, where you can drive without the stop/start of city traffic.

For diagnostics, I'm not able to advise, sorry

  • Seems like my CLA is too new to get free stuffs.

    • Says CLA is compatible? Or is the dealer being tight arse?

      • Hmm I think your right, must investigate further. Mine is 2017 which is still Gen 1.
