Seagate 4TB Desktop External Hard Drive $99 @ Officeworks

850

These have been popular in the past (e.g. this deal). Some stores have some, some have none. I picked one up today, and other stores were showing stock. The drives appear to be shuckable. Edit: HollyKryten says the drive inside is actually a Seagate Barracuda Compute 4TB 5400RPM 3.5" HDD.

Also, if you're an OzBargainer that is affected by the bushfires right now - and many of us are - then I hope you are doing OK.

  • shuckable? what drive is inside?

    • +8

It's easily shuckable. All you need is a flat headed screwdriver to do it. Inside is a Seagate Barracuda Compute 4TB 3.5" 5400 rpm HDD (SMR technology). I know because i shucked a few some time ago.

      • CrystalDiskInfo detects my drive as a "ST4000DM004-2CV104 4000.7GB"

      • does the case work just like a standard sata2usb? last time I shucked a WD the controllers had some kind of custom firmware on it, which meant a standard 3.5" can't go in the case, and what's been formatted in the case can't be accessed normally after shucking…dunno if same for Seagate? any ideas?

        • bought one and answered my own question for anyone else interested. works just like a regular sata enclosure. compatible with any other standard 3.5" sata drives.. can also work for a 2.5" just the drive itself doesnt sit properly inside the box without some kind of adapter.

It's cheaper for $98 at Harvey Norman. But i suppose not every one wants to shop there.

Price match at Officeworks and get it 5% cheaper.

Great. I didn't think about that. I literally just got a pair this afternoon.

    • +1

I can't seem to find it for 98?

      • me neither. shows 128 for me.

        • Gone up in price. It was $98 yesterday.

By the way that shucking photo from the link in the description is the 2.5" internal drive from the 4TB Expansion portable model. It's actually the Seagate Barracuda Compute 4TB 5400 rpm 3.5" HDD you're getting from the Expansion Desktop 3.5" model.

    • You da real mvp

Shucked one from Officeworks 2 days ago and it was a ST40000DM004, so it is 7200RPM. YMMV.

        • Looks like you are right! $158 currently at Mwave (which would have warranty) for the same one for anyone wondering.
please also note that the drive is SMR so it has pretty bad write speeds. Best use is as an archive drive.

@sharperner: Bought one today and it also has the ST4000DM004 as expected. Should be good enough for my needs, just for backups and storage attached to an RPi so I'll keep it in the enclosure.

Can confirm, I own this Seagate Expansion 4TB HDD and CrystalDiskInfo detects the drive as a "ST4000DM004-2CV104 4000.7 GB" with a Rotation rate of "5425 RPM"

Thoughts on Seagate? I've always bought WD and never had a single issue.
Forget it, I want an portable external hard drive! Ops!

    • They've been good for me. Had 1 die out of the 4 I've owned for 4-5 years. They are the 3TB models.

    • -1

Recently recovered data from a 'Seagate' external drives that had WD inside the case! Go figure!

  • +3

I've bought 4 of these from the last time they were on sale and so far so good. I've got multiple WD and seagate hdds and besides the dodgy 3tb Seagates in the past, neither brand seems to fail more often then the other as of late. Having said that, I've still got old WD hdds that still work after years where as the Seagates from the past do tend to fail more often then not eventually.

    • I got 7 hgsts 4tbs that have been going strong for the past 7 years. Guess it's time to push my luck with a Seagate …

    • Always check the backblaze statistics sheets before claiming that.

      Every year reveals interesting trends.

  • thoughts on using this with Xbox One?

Too bulky I reckon, prefer a portable one on XB1/S/X or PS4/Pro.

    • +1

So mean as an external drive. It's possible but i wouldn't count on easily taking it out of home being a bit bulky compared to a smaller 2.5" portable drive. You will need a spare power point for it too.

    • +2

I shucked this drive a few weeks ago, it's 5400RPM, slow. Your games would load very slow, avoid for this use case.

  • Suitable for a RAID 6 set-up with existing wd red 4tbs?

  • Ok, now I need a way to get all the episodes of kumcats

  • These were $98 for several weeks up until last monday.

  • Thanks OP. I need some extra storage for my PS4, would this be sufficient?

  • Would these be suitable for NAS?

  • +1

    Bought two in store. Thanks.

  • +1

Thanks OP. I just bought one.

My WD MYBOOKLIVE DUO 8TB mirrored NAS died completely after having replaced 1x4TB failed drive in it about a month ago. Now the whole damn thing has gone. NAS box not contactable, drive A has untouchable data, drive B not recognised.

So, Seagate gets a chance as my (hopefully) recovery drive.

BTW, OW eBay delivery is $25!!!!
