anyone know a best bang per buck mid range full size table?

    • Hey donkeykong, see my comment below with regards to price and table quality. I'm no expert but you may find the info useful and save you the googling.

They've been there since before Xmas, it was advertised in a Paypal email. Since then they added the table tennis version - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=35…
        - but even that was months ago. I know because I've been watching them on and off since then - I would get one but I've got nowhere to put it.

Having known nothing about pool table quality, I did a bit of research. 25mm MDF seems to be about the best quality MDF you can get. MDF is apparently some kind of cheap, chipboard-like wood. It's prone to warping over time, especially in extreme-ish weather conditions or if it gets wet. The thicker it us the better, less likely to warp. After MDF, it goes to slate, which is a lot better quality material. It sags over time due to weight but last a lot longer than MDF. But it also ups the price of the table into the thousands, and makes it almost impossible to install/move without professional help due to the weight. So 25mm MDF seems pretty good bang for buck.

The size of pool table (8 foot) seems to be good. At most pool halls (at least the couple I've been to) you mostly get the smaller 7 foot tables, which just seem too small if you've ever played on anything bigger, or a couple of the bigger 9 foot tables, which are a bit difficult for newbie/amateur players like me, and probably wouldn't be practical for most houses anyway, unless you're putting it in a big garage.

One other thing I discovered is, apparently having this type of pocket - with ramps taking the balls away - is not as desirable as balls can become stuck. I don't know how frequently that happens, or if the probability changes with table quality, beyond changing to the standard net-type pockets.

As to the quality of the accessories, I have no idea. I figure they've got to be cheapies, but aren't as much of a problem. You could always upgrade them if you want to. I haven't looked into the table tennis gear either. I figure for the extra 50 bucks you can't really go wrong, and the tables don't take as much punishment as a pool table so as long as it's flat and stays that way for a few years, it doesn't matter.

Keep in mind I'm no expert in pool or pool tables, and I play only rarely, so take this advice how you want. It's just stuff I've found when I thought about getting one of these tables months ago.

i'd just like to add for slate tables (we have one) that the slate never actually sags. What happens is the felt covering becomes warn and therefore the playing surface becomes uneven, but then you can get new felt put in for a reasonable price, so the idea is that slate table hold their value because the parts that wear out can easily be really replaced. But yes slate tables will be at least 2 or 3 thousand so thats a huge investment.

        • Niksrulz, funny you say that mate.

        • niksrulz: get a job… but you're on ozb LOL

        • +1

Any issues from felt wearing away will happen twice as quick with a cheap table, MDF or not.
the rubber used in the side cushions is also probably quite shite, meaning the balls won't bounce off particularly well.

these things will be a bitch to get level, and because mdf is quite light will be easy to knock off level even if you get it there.

Just for people's info, this seems to be the ABN details of k-sports:

    http://www.abr.business.gov.au/SearchByAbn.aspx?abn=40131988…

  • Not sure about the quality, but the price is certainly very good. I would love one if I had one of those McMansions.

  • +2

Price looks good with delivery. Never owned a MDF table so can't comment on quality. My slate table was awesome until it got smashed up by cleaners in the floods :'(

If you want a pool table you have perhaps 3 options
    a) Cheap - this
    b) Cheap - 2nd hand slate (although, picking it up is a real challenge, perhaps 400+kgs to carry)
    c) Expensive - go all out with a slate

Weigh up the options for yourself but this seems to be the cheapest way to get a new table and have it delivered.

Good price but the "$400 of accessories" is total bullsh**..

  • +3

A mate of mine bought one of these a few weeks ago and I helped him put it together.
We were a little worried when we pulled the parts out of the boxes but once it was together the table was actually pretty solid.

The cushions aren't spectacular, but for the money paid for it you certainly cant complain and after a few beers no one notices anyway.

Just a couple of things he is planning on doing to it to improve it, like a bit of felt one the wooden ramp under the pockets etc so the balls don;t bounce, just fussy things.

The accessories are fine, they are not flash but can play pool with no issues :)

If you can afford slate then definitely get it, but you can't go wrong for this sort of money

  • I've always wanted my own pool table and this makes it very affordable, especially with the free delivery. I also notice they sell slate tables for $700, would it be worth getting the slate table for double the price?

    • +8

Yes. If you take the game seriously, MDF will get destroyed very quickly. Esp if you do loads of jump shots. Note that jump shots require you to shoot into the table not like how newbies do it by shooting between the ball and the table. That is a foul shot btw.

I have played pool quite a bit for about 5 years, but almost none for the past 2 years.

You have to understand you're paying for what you get.

Pool balls: Aramith is one of the best. About $100 a set for the base model.

Cues: Boils down to feel, weight balance and how well it's made. Decent Brands to look out for: Joss, Falcon, Mezz, Predator, Lucasi, Mcdermott and there are many others. I've listed them from stiff to soft/whippy (this is a generalisation). Be prepared to pay about $150 for a cheapest base model. Best websites to look for them are, Pool dawg, J&J cues, budget cues, billiard warehouse, etc . Custom cues, head over to Azbillards and look in the forums. Starts anywhere from USD$300 to USD$100k. My playing set cost me about $1.5k not including the rest of the collection. Cues are made out of wood. Better aging process = lower chance of warping but they still do not like big change in climates. So leaving your cues in the car on a hot sunny day is a no no. Higher chance of warping. Also avoid huge sudden humidity changes as well.

Cases: Instroke, J&J, Predator, Mezz. Which ever tickles your fancy. Typically written as 1x1 2x2 2x4 3x6. The smaller number = butts. Bigger number = shaft. A cheap hard case provides a lot more protection in comparison to a soft case. I'd recommend instroke for a decent case.

Accessories: Ebay is your best friend.

Any questions let me know, i'll try my best to help.

  • Don't expect these tables to be of the same quality you find in pubs/pool rooms. The MDF playing surface doesn't even come close to slate you can't even start to compare the 2.

These tables are cheap enough if you just want to have a bash around in the garage with mates or you can whack a top on it and use it as a card table.

I guarantee the cloth will be synthetic Chinese manufactured and very thin, unlike the English wool Strachan 6811, so expect a recloth within 12 months which normally costs around $450 fitted.

With these tables you get what you pay for.

  • Are these tables really just 85cm high or am I reading it wrong?

    • thats what it looks like to me but i think thats the average hight isnt it?

  • I was actually just chatting to my gf the other day that we should get a pool table :)

Anyone can comment on what kind of gameplay you'd get?

I'm not expecting top end but I don't wanna have any problems with it.

  • I got one of these type of pool tables years ago and still in great condition it lives under the patio but with a heavy duty cover only issue I've ever had is the feet are easy to break as they are just plastic. Other then that excellent price for a bit of fun for the kids and drunk adults.
