        Thats right, nevermind.

a doorbell for 200 bucks? why?

    • +29

      Because it is on sale

    • +1

I still haven't decided on which path to go down. Nest, Arlo, Ring, or hard wire….Alexa or Google?

      • +6

Project Connected Home over IP includes Amazon, Apple, Google and Zigbee Alliance. Might be worth waiting to see which products are combatible.

My personal preference is Power over Ethernet because batteries are annoying so a single cable for data and power makes sense.

        • Thank you. I appreciate the heads up, as usual…don't be an early adopter.

      • Alexa

      • +1

I ordered a Wuuk. It's my first crowdfunding 'purchase'. It's completely wireless and can stick onto your wall/door without any installation. They say the rechargeable battery lasts for 8 months.

        • Have you received the order? Would you recommend it. Looking for one.

          • @GreatBarrier: Not yet. They were trying to manufacture the initial lot before Chinese New Year, but that isn't looking likely any more. Their beta units apparently tested very well, though.

    • +3

      It’s also a security camera.

      • +3

        And intercom.

    • +1

It doesn't stop there. The yearly subscription for life $150 per year……

      • Worth noting that Google Nest is dropping their per camera subscription fee from next year, for a flat fee.

      • That's the thing that turns me off most of these devices…

  • +8

Don't forget that Ring doorbells have recently been hacked as well as the fact that Ring will disclose your location to police just because they can.

      • I've not seen any stories about other camera companies having hackers view the bedroom of an 8 year old while shouting n***** at her.

        • +12

Why would you have a doorbell camera in an 8 year old's bedroom?

        • +14

          This is misleading.

What happened was the e-mail used was also used on another website that had its database leaked.

This allowed hackers to access the e-mail (since it seems the password was the same), therefore it allowed them to access the camera.

Now, obviously you can say Ring is at fault for not making a system that detects suspicious IP addresses. However, there is some personal responsibility here. The parents should have 2 step verification and unique passwords, this would have avoided the whole thing

    • +5

Are you sure about that - because they're saying they were not hacked, and it was just people using credentials stolen from other website leaks (which is how most netflix etc accounts are "hacked" - people using same email/password for facebook, etc)

      • +5

See the comment below by mathew42 about how shit the Ring security is.

Ring is not offering basic security precautions, such as double-checking whether someone logging in from an unknown IP address is the legitimate user, or providing a way to see how many users are currently logged in—entirely common security measures across a wealth of online services.

        Also

We logged into the Ring app and website from the U.S., U.K., Spain, and Singapore, in some cases simultaneously and from various devices and browsers that had never been used to log into the platform before. At no point did Ring trigger any sort of alert, such as an email notification, to check that the IP address the system had never seen did indeed belong to the legitimate camera owner. Gmail, for instance, may email you if it detects a suspicious login attempt from a new location, a new device, or a new browser.

        • +4

Set up 2 factor authentication and you’re sorted.

          • @Slo20: Ahh yes, SMS 2FA. The most unsecure type of 2FA available.

            • @Tacooo: How exactly is it unsecure? It’s only unsecure if they have access to your phone or have a Trojan installed. If they somehow have your account, password and your phone then I think you have bigger problems then someone gaining access to your doorcam.

              • @SlappersOnly: You know how easy it is to port a number?

                • +4

@Tacooo: Again, if someone has your doorcam account details and ported your phone number, you probably have bigger problems. Possibly unplug your doorcam until you get a new phone number?

                • @Tacooo: How would they know your number to port?

                  • @brotherfranciz: Database breaches.

                    • -1

@Tacooo: All that effort to use your sophisticated doorbell. Sounds very likely.

    • +2

Also they are implementing facial ID so they can have a surveillance network and scan people walking past your house.

    • +1

As mentioned, they were not hacked. Lazy people just use the same email address and password for everything on internet. Once hackers get a hold of your email and password from some other website with terrible security they run that while list of email/password combos against different websites that are more interesting. If the hackers get in using this technique it is your own fault. The number of people that use the same password on their Gmail accounts on third party sites must depressingly high.

      • Put your email addresses in here to check if you’re in any of the known leaks that made it to the dark net or whatever. It’s the unknown leaks you need to worry about.

Have a read of this which was written yesterday: https://threatpost.com/ring-plagued-security-issues-hacks/15…

"As part of their security testing, Motherboard logged into a Ring
account (both on the app and the website) with its corresponding email
and password from various IP addresses worldwide. No alert was triggered
notifying the Ring owner about the suspicious login attempts – even with
      simultaneous logins occurring.

Motherboard also said that once people logged into the test Ring’s app,
they were able to access an array of information – including camera
footage, the owner’s Wi-Fi network details that the device is connected
to and the owner’s home address (which Ring requires users to input).

This is troubling because, as the spokesperson pointed out, email
addresses and passwords for Ring can be easily obtained by hackers in
underground forums – or at least guessed based on other credentials
utilized by the Ring user that could be found on the Dark Web.

“It’s a relatively trivial task for hackers to gain large sets of
breached usernames and passwords and test them out on a vast number of
online services in the hope that people have reused the same password in
multiple places,” Matt Walmsley, EMEA director at Vectra, said in an
      email to Threatpost."

  • +2

Might want to read We Tested Ring’s Security. It’s Awful before ordering.

    • +8

What a beat up… people could only access the "journo"s account because he gave them his email and password, and he doesn't have 2 factor authentication turned on!

      • +1

Possibly, but Why Ring can’t just blame users for those home-invading camera ‘hacks’ provides a good argument as to why Ring's 'Nothing to see here' response is not acceptable.

      • MFA is important, and also not reusing creds. Especially if you have already been pwned haveibeenpwned.com. The journo also says that they should implement an ip acl with approved ips for access. This sounds good but is only good if you have static ips, which isn't really easy if you're using a mobile device.

    • Google behind the news that went mainstream . They did a good job as people not getting paid are still spreading the message :)

  • +1

    Great deal thanks OP

  • +1

Have been waiting for a deal on the Ring 2 as the prior ones were for the ring 1. Price is best I've seen for a while so pulled the trigger. Thanks the for heads up OP!

  • +2

    bummer it has subscription costs

Trying to decide over arlo, eufy or this

    • +1

Why not Nest? I also need to choose one soon.

  • These cameras are creepy. They will send what you look like to those data mining companies.

If you're not paranoid about those companies, would you be ok with the government selling and storing doorbell data? No? Australia's laws allow the government to do that anyway. Enjoy!

I suggest getting your own motion activated security cameras. Sorry it does not have the "cool" factor.

  • Are these ones easily accessible by hackers as well?

    • +3

Yes, as long as you give them your email and password and turn off two-factor authentication.

      • turn off two-factor authentication.

It is turned on by default?

        • +3

It should be on, like you should lock your car.

          • -1

@Ulysses31: Most cars will eventually auto-lock these days. You know, a security feature that is present and also turned on by default (unless disabled).

Two factor authentication usually needs to be set up on most devices that offer it and isn't mandatory and thus why I ask.

  • +1

    Thanks OP, steps work, ordered.

  • +1

Too bad these aren't compatible with Google devices since Amazon bought the company

    • +1

They might be in the future, Amazon just joined a smarthome standards consortium with Google and Apple. https://www.macrumors.com/2019/12/18/apple-amazon-google-zig…

      • +1

Might ain't good enough for me. New integrated tech also?

        • +1

They can probably add it with a firmware update if they really wanted to.

    • Holy moly I just bought 2-for-1 Google Home Nest from JB for Xmas hoping to connect them… why is it advertised as compatible?

  • I'm on the fence atm, is this worth buying or is it just another overpriced fancy gadget?

    • +1

      Yes, yes it is….

      • So, I'm wondering..wires are not needed, right?

        • Depending on the model

    • -1

i was on the fence..then $200 bux fell out of my pocket.

      • +2

Check your pants. The fence might have cut a hole in them.

  • I ordered Ring 1 last week and got it delivered couple of days ago. Can I return it back and buy this new offer? Would Amazon accept that ?

    • +1

Amazon has 30 day return policy, you probably can.

    • You should, ring 1 reviews are ass.

      • Had no issues with the original ring. Yes the 2 is better, but the Pro is the best.

        • Pro is what I figured is the best after reviews, but the price is so high. So now I’m thinking Nest, I’ll be able to order additional cameras from Officeworks when they are on sale.

  • +1

Thank you OP. Ordered as you said and got myself a great deal.

  • +1

This is a great deal. I paid more just for the doorbell earlier this year.

  • Do the echo devices make noise when doorbell is rung or does it need the chime device

    • You'd be able to configure it to make your Google home/Echo make a sound if you have one of them.

      • I don’t think it works with google home

  • +1

Thank you OP. Ordered as you said and got myself a great deal.

  • +1

    Such a good deal

  • Interestingly, showing $183.39 after discounts applied ?

    • You probably have a discount code like -10$

    • Same had a $15.00 promotional code

  • Same trick applied to ring spotlight cam aswell (Wired or wireless), possible other ring products also.

  • Given ring is owned by amazon now assume these won't integrate well with nest hubs? great price though.

  • Now to decide to go with a white or black Echo Show…. decisions…

  • +1

    what happened to $10 doorbells?

what happens when your doorbell costs more than your package? they steal the doorbell

  • +1

arrived this morning! will install it this afternoon

    • You have done better than me , ordered an early version when they were only in the US and its still sitting there in the box !

      • I even painted the little mounting block thing too :)

        Doorbell works great!
