Thanks, looks like a an viable replacement for Office if you don't want to go open source/linux/openoffice.

    • +33

There’s no reason not to go the open source option.

      • How's the word compatibility lately in Libre? I experienced too many incompatabilties about 2 years back.

        • +8

From what I’ve read this is based on LibreOffice, so compatibility would be very similar if not the same.

        • It's pretty good. I rarely have a problem even when there is an issue, it's small.

        • -4

We use LibreOffice to create New documents. We like it.

And, in ouir experience, True Open Source won'd do THIS:

Although they're on the Ultra Office menu…

Ultra PDF has to be installed separately!
          as does Ultra Zip

And it can be a Big Deal trying to do that, on Win 10:

Of course Microsoft Win 10 gets in the way:

          • M$ "hides" (AFAIK) the downloaded "Ultra Office for PC" install file

Demanding to SMS a code to the registered phone
(We could do this, as the phone was near at hand)

BUt - even thought we said Don't ask fir this/sush
          security clearance any more -

          • M$ asked for a different code before we could install "Ultra PDF"

(So, I guess - until we guess it - we WON'T have access to Ultra PDF
          nor Ultra Zip.!)

So you see what can happen when Beautiful Open Source
COLLIDES with ratty ol' M$… Yuck!

        • +3

It's still fairly rough. I use office 365 on my laptop but linux/libre office on my desktop. I write my assignments on the desktop, put them on dropbox and do the final copy on my laptop. Something is always broken and not displaying properly. .doc may be ok but docx is not great in my experience. Probaly depends what kind of documents you are producing though.

          • @bobbytg: Yeah, that describes my experience to the letter .. luckily i get away with not having to pay for office 365 subscription myself

      • -5

how about if I don't want to

        • +8

Oh I forgot the reason of ignorance.

          • +1

@PainToad: yeah because people dont use what you use

            very mature

            • @Freestyle: Why would anyone want to use a badged Libreoffice instead of Libreoffice itself? Especially when the supposed company that rebadged the Libreoffice is just some guy in his garage?

            • +1

@Freestyle: Ok, explain to me why you’d use this closed source version of this that adds no advantages and is actually less safe because you have no way of knowing what was added to the code?

      • +4

Actually, there is a reason. Power users who write a lot of code will not find an alternative that uses Microsoft's VBA language. If workbooks are updated to the chosen replacement format, all code will need to be re-written in the alternative language (if the system includes it in the free version). Potentially, that means a lot of coding work. It does mean learning another programming language.

Those who are not power users should be able to switch easily. Look and feel will be different but Microsoft is prone to shift things about between versions with no warning so there's not a lot to lose.

Don't neglect Google docs and the not widely publicised free Office online account. If you have a Micrososft Live account (e.g. email), use that logon on the link below and you can start straight away
        https://www.office.com/

        • +12

Yes there are obviously reasons to go MS Office over LibreOffice. But you do know this deal isn't for MS Office right?

    • +1

It can replace office sure. However this seems just a reface of an open source project that they are pretending to charge for. Probably just after a bunch of email and other details.

  • +6

Pretty it’s just another libreoffice clone.

  • +67

It really shits me when companies take the hard work off open source developers, tweak it a little and then profit of it.

    Just use libreoffice.

    • +23

      This.
Guys, please don't support shady developers whose only contribution is changing of the product name and splash screen. You will be using an outdated software, cause they are always lagging behind the real product.

      • -4

Except that you're negging a deal which is free. So they aren't profiting off it for this particular deal.

I'd get it if it was $25 off and was $50, but you're literally getting software for free. Can't see a compelling argument as to why you wouldn't claim this, even if you're not going to use it.

        • +22

It's still supporting it, by boosting their download rate and get seo to recognise them.

        • There's an open source version. There is no reason to get this.

        • +7

Because by downloading it you are building up their reputation instead of supporting those who actually build this product, even if support consist of only fair use of it. The next thing those shady "devs" will do they're going to put a price tag on "their creation" and sell it as reputable devs. Or publish a different money making crap "from creators of reputable Ultra Office". Their not the only ones trying to claim points for something they never did. And I found it appalling and unfair to those who actually put endless hours and plenty of skill to create something like that and offer it for free.

    • -5

Why the spam of neg posts in this thread ? one gets your point across.

      • +7

You can't neg more than once. It just shows what vote you made every time you comment. Same with positive votes.

        • -6

No, I meant he keeps posting multiple comments trying to push libreoffice down our throats.

          • +14

@redcreek200: Some people are passionate about not letting good freeware die while having shits like these people profit off of it without contributing anything.

      • This is the spam comment on this post all the negs are so very valid

        • LibreOffice FTW

And it's freeware all the time!

    • You know, the folks who contributed all that hard work did so Voluntarily, right?

They're just like the folks, who raised ~$1,000,000 this year, eg, by Fundraising every day, week, etc.
to support the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), so you'll have a "Flying Ambulance" to carry
your s*rry @ss to hospital if you ever - G-d forbid! - need one (eg, from some Outback town or road).

Their choice of Cause if different, but they're Both exercising Freedom to Choose how they use their Free time.

Some folks ar simply More Generous than others… That's another side to MultiCulturalism, that makes the World Intersting.

Get used to it, They Ain'ta Gonna Change - any time soon - just 'cause you don't like what they do or who benefits from it all… ;~)

    • -1

      This

    • But that's why capitalism is, and everyone (bar me) seems to love it. Getting rich by exploiting other peoples' work.

      • Yeah because the alternative works so well. /s

  • +2

PDF editor might be worth it

    • +2

My only reason for getting this, will check it out

      • Any reports on the pdf editor? I'm using my Chromebook at work so can't check this one out.

    • +2

I hoped so. I just downloaded it, but I can't save my edits without buying a "Yearly License" for $5.99, or Perpetual License for $9.99.

  • +1

This goes free often. Did anyone actually use it?

    • Their web site says: "Save AU$74.95"

      • Wow! it must be true as Internet said it

  • Can we just click 'Get' now and install it even after the 3 day free period, on a computer I buy later?

  • +3

Ultra Office is the best free office…

    Sounds like it's always free

    • Have downloaded and in install process got a pop up asking to rate to "please help keep this app always free".

In saying that, am giving it a go to see how it fares.

    • Dunno… web site sez: "Save AU$ 74.nn"

It's still Ver 1.nnn, so maybe they need feedback & bug reports, in this dev't phase…?

PS Here's what it can Open & Do, at the moment:

      • LOL. It's a mirror rip-off of LibreOffice. There is no "dev't phase".

  • +15

As per my comment last time

    Literally from someguy's garage.

    https://www.google.com/search?q=CompuClever+Systems+Inc.&oq=….

The office suite ain't even listed under their products

    http://www.compuclever.com/

The screenshot pretty much shows its just a fork of Libreoffice or Openoffice.

Just go with Libreoffice and skip the middleman, god knows what they have done to it.

    • +7

god knows what they have done to it.
      Another very good point

  • +12

Some advice for anyone looking for truly free software: search for "Open Source" instead of free and you'll mostly avoid all those trial versions and malware that come from looking for "free"

There's also a website, alternativeto.net which will help you work out what's best for you.

For an Office productivity suite, there's nothing wrong with LibreOffice.

  • +6

Reskin of libre office, which is already free

  • +5

OnlyOffice (100% MS compatibility) and LibreOffice are the ones to go with. Not these copy cats.

  • +1

    Here's a far better deal: save $449.95

    • +1

I better stock up, lest it’s a pricing error.

  • +2

Looks like a exact copy LibreOffice, seriously look at Screenshots. It's always a freeware, how is this a deal?

  • +3

This is a find-and-replace + logo change of LibreOffice, which is open-source.

It might even be illegal if they don't distribute source code (I don't recall if LO is GPL or Apache).

Also, "Was $75"? Earlier in the year it "Was $150".
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/465734

This will have the same MSOffice compatibility as LibreOffice has.
If you're looking for a cheap proprietary office suite, checkout:
    https://www.wps.com/

    • Considering it's competing with free, I don't see a reason to pay for, AND put my trust in WPS.
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WPS_Office
      Chinese owned and developed software.

      • I've been using the Linux version (which will always be freeware apparently) for a couple of years, mostly because it handles some .doc (2003) files better than LO.
Other's might like it because it's interface is more like the latest versions of MS Office than libreoffice is.

I know it's Chinese but I don't have a problem with Chinese developers and would trust them about as much as I'd trust other proprietary software devs like Sublime Text, Cemu and Teamviewer (3 random proprietary apps I have installed on Linux).

I understand your point though, and I try to use FOSS where possible. I think you'd agree that it offers more than the LibreOffice recompile OP posted thought :)

  • +4

There is no deal if it were free and open-sourced in the first place

  • I think it's just a ruse to get you to make a MS Store account

    • I made one just for some free game while ago and then gears of war later and some other stuff.

Came in handy for xbox game pass for pc deals but I have no time or energy any more to even fire up my pc after work or what not do I just buy and collect games on deep discounts and bundles in the hope someday I will find some magical free time and unlimited energy and maybe even renewed motivation to go through all that my amassed and every growing library when I'm all grey and old.. Well just old because I have been pretty much been greying since I was 16 I think maybe earlier idk.

      Yeah Microsoft accounts.

  • +2

    Save AU$74.95

    Sure you do.

  • Just a reminder if your work has Office 365 including the desktop applications you probably are entitled to 5 installations. You may be able to get away with using one of those at home..

  • +1

What I said previously for this same product: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/465734#comment-7425588

I previously downloaded Ultra Office and could not tell the difference with LibreOffice. Even the taskbar/app icons are the same!

Why would you pay for Ultra Office when you can use LibreOffice? Remember, LibreOffice is a free open-source project which asks for donations. LibreOffice are the people (volunteers in fact) who worked hard to develop the software.
    https://www.libreoffice.org/

Prove me wrong but it seems like Ultra Office is just a re-packaged version of LibreOffice.

  • It's a bit useless if you're using Office VBA macros but for people who don't want to delve into that aspect, but Libre office is a good product.
    Don't use Ultra Office.

  • +2

Negging because open source is the bargain here. Paying for a rebadged open source based product is silly.

  • +2

It’s disgusting this deal still has 95 votes.

    • Because the non-tech savvy don't know any better. Might be worth reporting this to the mods, the OzBargain staff seem to know about tech.

      • I did report it the day it was posted. Free software isn’t allowed - and the regular price is BS. But here we are days later and nothings been done. Good work mods.

Maybe OP could step up and update the post pointing out it was a mistake to post this…

        • I tried reporting it as well shortly after my reply to you (with a detailed set of reasons) but they said it's not a moderation issue.

  • Install this if you're okay with your system being compromised by a shady invasive group of apps.

    • I've had it installed since the last time the deal was posted. I'm still waiting for my system to compromised.

      • 1) Not saying it is compromised, but if it was, there’s a good chance you wouldn’t know.
        2) Why on earth do you have this installed when Libreoffice is near identical, will get updates faster, is supported by a massive team of developers instead of what looks like a one man operation, is guaranteed to be safe because the code is open for anyone to check and will always be free. Seriously, why.

        • Well I was interested in trying it, the first time the deal was posted. I don't actually use it at the moment, as I've gone back to using Ashampoo/SoftMaker Office, which I purchased some time ago. At some point I will uninstall it.

      • No worries - keep using and keep waiting until your data suddenly pops up on the DarkNet and/or you get very personalised phishing emails that you will click and lose money.

        • I don't think either option will happen and I'm smart enough, to never click on links in phishing emails. Based on the experience of testing hundreds of unknown apps over the years and never having had an issues as a result, I'm not too worried.

More importantly, as I said on my last reply, I'm not actually using Ultra Office anymore.
