931

On Saturday 14 December, Sydney’s new light rail will start running passenger services on the L2 Randwick line, from Circular Quay to Randwick.

The new light rail will run fare free on the first weekend with the first services starting around 11am Saturday 14 morning. The fare free weekend (Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 December) only applies to the L2 Randwick line, not the existing L1 Inner West line or other public transport services.

We can ride the light rail from town hall to the pub

      • Unfortunately he said paying passengers, so the beer won’t be free that weekend :(

  • Not really much of a deal, given that it's a weekend.

      As opposed to… walking?

      • +1

Walking is fine in the city if it weren't for all this bushfire smoke.

        • Or for someone who isn't a local (like me) having another form of public transport is amazing.

well if the metro is anything to go by…..
then it will be super packed with no room to breath
and it will break down (or even run someone over)

    • No jam in your donut this morning :(

        how about some cream pie?

I am interested to see how this super long tram will run. I suspect, like you, that it will be a shitfest. It is said that the tram wi be at capacity from day 1.

It shouldve been heavy rail to randwick, not a tram.

      • +2

But its heavy and its on a rail. What more could you want from us? - NSW Govt.

Also us: Have a look at that big patch of dirt next to the light rail corridor.

Thanks! Was hoping to get off at Kingsford for some Indo food but nope.

      • +1

I also love Indo foods, might get off at UNSW and walk a little bit.

        • +1

UNSW High Street? It'll be a 15-20 min walk won't it?

      • +2

Get off at Randwick Junction and walk to Java on Avoca Street. The same family has run the joint for 30+ years, and the food is excellent.

        • Great suggestion. Thank you! How does the food compare to say Ayam 99?

Kingsford is changed now, it's mainly full of malatang stores and AU GO daigo stores

  • great news!

One weekend? You'd think they should give at least a month for free, to get people using it daily and to make up for all the disruptions.

    • +1

No this is Sydney. You may be getting mixed up with any other reasonable metro transport provider which reimburses free travel whenever there services goes down

      • How can you expect us NOT to charge you the default full fee when OUR system goes down and you cant tap off?

  • -7

why you down vote a realistic depiction of what will happen on free weekend is beyond me

well if the metro is anything to go by……free weekend launch will mean:
then it will be super packed with no room to breath
and it will break down (or even run someone over)

wow snow flakes really can't handle the truth

    Thanks, ordered 10.

Cheers. I have a couch and refrigerator I need to relocate from Randwick to The Rocks that weekend so the timing is perfect. Buses are completely unfit for this purpose.

  • Wow Sydney finally have a couple Trams like South Australia has since the 1900s

  • Runs on eneloop

  • Would the NSW government consider FREE TRAM zone like in Mel and Adel? Count this free only on Saturday 14/12 as 15/12 Sunday is fixed price travel anyway and it would be crowded as hell for sure.

    • No

  • Met any ozbargainers on the light rail today?

    • Missed the chance to do an ozb meet up on the free light rail
