So is the mate pro is better edition? And this is not the 2020 model which I take are not out yet, do you need to pay a subscription to use these or after a year.
The pro has a better Bluetooth range than the mate, yes.
The new 2020 tiles are available on Amazon US.
Subscription is for additional features like 30 day location logging, notifications when you leave home without the tile-attached item and "free" battery replacement. Also let's you share tile locations with more than 2 accounts. They continue to work just fine without a subscription, though.

I've checked the map around me 40km from the Melbourne CBD and there are tonnes of users. Gotta imagine it just gets better the closer you get. Seems pretty good though.
