What is Muji?

Muji (無印良品 Mujirushi Ryōhin) is a Japanese retail company which sells a wide variety of household and consumer goods.

Muji is distinguished by its design minimalism, emphasis on recycling, avoidance of waste in production and packaging, and no-logo or "no-brand" policy.

The name Muji is derived from the first part of Mujirushi Ryōhin, translated as No Brand Quality Goods on Muji's European website. wiki

In fact some of Xiaomi's products seem to copy Muji products.

If you're into Japanese design products, they are quite popular in Asia.

They’ve also been described as sort of like a Ikea x Kmart store all over Japan.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2019

Fun fact, if you rearrange the letters of MUJI then move all the letters 11 spots to the left in the alphabet it spells IKEA.

    • wow 😮 👏

    • +5

      You are extra ordinary consumer

    • +4

      We all got trolled…

    • +2

      illuminati confirmed!

    • You can't go left of A

      • +1

        It's called Caps Lock.

      • You don't have to. You go left of I

    • +1

And if you reverse the word IKEA, replace the E with O.. it would read AOKI

    • By changing the letters around and removing one you get HAL

  • +7

20% off their full price is still usually too expensive for a lot of their stuff

  • +12

Always found this store intriguing although I always find myself bored & simply walk out of the store empty handed.
I always thought if I were to move into a new spot and start a “minimalist” lifestyle I would end up at MUJI as the first stop.
As always it’s just a fantasy, and in reality from my part it’s just one of those “ooh” stores which you walk past and imagine a drastic change in lifestyle (possible projection).

I feel the same. Though I do always buy a pen or two from there - they're fantastic.

      • +1

Seems like they got you hooked.
Once I asked about a product and it was out-of-stock.
Edit: I just remembered we got the peg clothes hanger thingy (actually someone else did). Frame is made of aluminium and it really is a great product. It has seen awhile of use, and really feels like it will last (our previous all-plastic one broke).

    • Yea, same feelings here. Though their pens are to die for.

      • +1

Heck of a sacrifice for a pen

Muji makes great quality goods. (But some of their products are not worth the price and you could easily find substitutes from reject shop etc for half the price.)

Here are some of the items I have purchased and would recommend:

    1. All of their notebooks —> very good quality for the price

    2. Their pens —> lots of styles and colours to choose from

    3. Travel Toiletry Bag —> a bit pricey but much better quality than the xiaomi one. Very sturdy, holds up really well, has lots of small compartments and surprisingly I could fit lots of toiletries in there.

    4. The best foaming hand soap dispenser!

Agree with your comments. Stationary is overall good, little things like their business card holders etc.
Some of their home goods like travel bottles and mini fragrence atomizer is good.
Also been lucky enough to get some of their down vests and outdoor men's clothing discounted in their Asian stores and the quality is good.

    • +1

Whenever I’ve seen a substitute at the reject shop, it’s price difference is more like 80% cheaper at the reject shop.

Muji is so over priced on most items I’ve walked in on sales with other stacking offers and still walked out empty handed. I also notice they sell weirdly out dated stuff like DVD players and old skool stereos(maybe it’s hip?? I dunno] for a silly price.

    • +1

Also love their travel container cases. Reduced my travel kit to half the size - much better than trying to reuse some old cases

    • Muji is much cheaper in Japan (depending on exchange rates though, I guess), especially when there are sales. Similar to how Daiso in Japan sells 100 yen (+10 yen tax) items in Japan which should be around $1.50 in Aus, but instead we pay $2.80 sadly.

    • A lot of what they sell is just Chinese OEM products.

  • Got their dining table set and oak stacking shelves during their last sale. Looks beautiful. But the dining table looks worn out after a while. Had to put a piece of glass over it.

  • I really like their stationary

    • +6

      Stationery*

    • +9

      I really like their stationary

Well it's certainly not going anywhere fast!

    • Hey you lied! That isn’t fun at all

    • It actually means hair down there!

  • +1

MUJI translated means 'great quality japan-made goods', we need more quality japanese company selling their goods here…

I'm patiently waiting for Tokyu Hands and Don Quixote

      • +3

Don Quijote, or simply called Donki. Highly recommended for anyone going to Japan. I spent at least 3 hours in their stores every time I’m in Japan. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Quijote_(store)

        • +1

They have in Singapore too I noticed

          • @first in line: I can't believe I went to Singapore and did not walk into Tokyu Hands and Donki even though I saw Donki almost everywhere - it just didn't click until I got back home.

    • +1

The word Mujirushi means unlabeled or unbranded

    • I'd have to correct you on that! 無印良品 (Mujirishi Ryohin) roughly means "Unbranded Good Products."

  • +1

    No online store.

  • +2

I always by my diary/planner from there. Minimalist and no unnecessary packaging and a very good price! Other things I've tried: their skincare is alright- the oil cleanser is good for its price, stationary is great. But the bra singlets are awful, for that price you'd expect the padding to be higher quality.

  • Has anyone tried their seamless undershirts? Uniqlo stupidly got rid of theirs.

  • +1

I have a muji toiletries case that's been with me on a dozen trips in the last decade, still going strong! Their beauty products in small sizes are great for travel

  • +1

Wow this is like never on sale.

    • They do have individual products on sale from time to time, but 20% off across their entire range of full priced items is probably the first time.

  • +1

Their clothing is much better quality than uniqlo even though it's pricier.

Offtopic: I used to do the books for Muji when they first expanded to Australia (in 2013 I think). I helped open their flagship store in Chadstone. As a business, their ethics are better than the market's average so I trust their quality.

Also offtopic: my colleague used to go to hot springs with Muji's head of Australia every weekend. I think it's just the Japanese culture to be very close with clients

Another offtopic: because of the "brandless" philosophy, Muji didnt put a label on their travel neck pillows, which were filled with small soft beads for comfort. One day a guy opened up a pillow and ate the fillings and died. His family sued Muji. The ACCC watchdog made Muji recall millions of pillows.

    • +1

      Thanks for sharing those experiences

    • +4

I can confirm I also ate the pillow contents and died. In retrospect it was a poor choice but great memories!

    • I've wondered about the neck pillows. I have one from almost a decade ago from Japan that had an outer that can be unzipped and washed, and the inner tube of beads. When the Sydney store opened I to buy another one and I noticed that the covers were sewn shut and had a giant hazard label. Do you have any links to articles about the incident? Really tragic for the guy and his family.

      Edit: Came across this https://www.productsafety.gov.au/recall/muji-retail-australi…

      • Oh yeah. That's the incident. Apparently Muji should have put a label "do not eat" on the pillows. Took me and my team almost a year to sort out all the stock return.

        • Was it some toddler who ate it or a grown man?

  • Few things that Muji is good for: 1. Underwear 2. Shoe Trees and 3. Certain clothing, which is better quality than Uniqlo

    • Can you elaborate on clothing? I'm a big fan of the Uniqlo jeans and chinos, for the price ($50) they last a long time. Would MUJI be better?

      • +1

I bought a lot of different type of stuff from Uniqlo, though I found their down jackets to be very good, some of the cotton shirts I bought, lost colour from the very first wash and now they have faded patches and I can't wear them outside. The organic cotton that MUJI uses is better quality and is slightly thicker. I have never tried Uniqlo's or MUJI's jeans so can't compare but I was happy with Uniqlo's chinos as they held up fine but they too lost a bit of colour, which I believe happens to most cotton clothing overtime.

I have read a few reviews where people said that MUJI's linen (shirts and trousers) is very good and it tends to wrinkle less when compared with Uniqlo's.

      • Uniqlo clothes are boxier and have brighter colours. Muji is a bit slimmer fit and has more muted/neutral colours. I wear more Muji clothes now and only go to Uniqlo for the Heattech range and down jackets.

  • Love their stuff… sadly no online store.

  • Talk about a lot of people and very certain people shoving everyone.

Still expensive with the discount 😅

    • what did you ended up getting?

      • Being in the market for a house mostly just bowls, plates etc.

    • Are you being racist again Clear?

      • +1

        Hahaha nooooo not this time

        • 😂

  • +1

The checkout line in Sydney city Muji store is insane FYI. Assuming it will be even worse over the weekend!

    • That's why I rocked up at 10am 😅

    • Lucky I went there on Thursday!

  • There's a couple of Muji stores in Perth… But people are referencing furniture and clothing, which is not something I've seen at either I've been to. Is this a thing in WA?

  • Anyone have their beads sofa? the one that looks like a bean bag? how's it for your back?
