  • So this would be the Global Version then?

    • +6

That's correct. The proper official global version with everyone's favourite B28!

      • +8

Now all we need are some friends to call. Any deals?

        • -2

          Just watch tic tok

  • Code doesn't work for White colour (Pre-order).

    • Just the Gray one is on sale currently at the moment sorry. I'll update the OP to reflect that.

  • Does the priority shipping work with parcel collect?

    • Auspost parcel collect? They sure do.

I normally get a text message from Auspost notifying me of delivery from GeekBuying with the priority shipping. Asking if I'm home, can be left in safe place etc.

  • How does the warranty works ? My wife good old Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 still kicking … despite being mistreated by toddlers, but just in case …

    • +7

Depending on the fault it may have to be returned to GeekBuying. I recommend that every OzBargainer should have PayPal's refunded returns turned on.

      • What do I do after 150 days to save on the return shipping as that's PayPal's limit.

      • Didn't know about that! Thanks. Sucks need to be activated and not auto applied.
        What else?

  • +1

Any deals on the Mi 9T Pro?

Can't believe this has Band 28. What a unicorn!

  • buy now or wait til friday?

    • +7

I checked with Geek earlier and there are no plans for this to be any lower during Black Friday.

  • Please do a deal on the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE Global Version. Please?

    • Are you buying USD? Using an OzB 'approved' creditcard with no nasty additional charges?

      • AUD

        • +3

THAT is your problem in one hit. I paid in USD (28Degree card - or whatever they call it now). My charges show $244.41 (slightly under the OP estimate in AUD).

Suggest that you try again (& consider revoking the neg.)

          :-)

    • +12

The negative vote really isn't necessary but I'm happy to help.

So the discount brings it to $166 US. If you put that through the current Mastercard or VISA rate you're going to get approximately $244.79 AU as per the deal. This is assuming that you're using a currency conversion fee free card (most OzBargainers do) either directly or set to use it's own rate in PayPal.

Then if you use Cashrewards 3.5% cashback you'll get approximately $8.56 AU back which brings the total down to ~$236.23 AU. It's not uncommon for a lot of deals here to utilise cashback either.

I agree that the rate on GeekBuying (like all other Chinese stores) is not accurate with the current exchange rate. It's why USD and what I mentioned above is recommended.

      • Why does cashrewards need to be involved at all? We all know they get a kick back commission from the sale which means GeekB should drop the price to the lowest that it should be and let the consumer pick up the bargain price and not let the middle man make a commission of the consumer. The cashrewards stunt is nothing more than a smokescreen.

        • +8

Not being an actual GeekBuying employee I can't accurately answer that so all I can give is a probable answer and insight as to why that's the case.

Basically the sales team have a set budget and each product can only go so low in pricing with this deal being as low as that goes. Meanwhile the affiliate team have their own budget which can be applied to deals such as these to offer a lower price without having an impact on the sales team budget.

In an ideal world I'd prefer it to be a direct discount but this is the best I can do and OzBargain is all about the lowest price (which this is) :)

          • @Clear: The sales team budget own the right pocket and the affiliate team own the left pocket of the same pants. It is quite silly indeed. Thanks for the explanation.

            • @Logical: Hence why I can't give you an accurate answer but that's the gist of it.

  • Does this use the MIUI user interface or can you install a clean Android OS? Does it have any IPX ratings?

    • +6

It has the MIUI interface out of the box. Given the new release of the Note 8 series, custom ROM development is just starting up so it'll be a while until that happens. This ROM for the Note 8 for example offers a Pixel-like experience already.

It doesn't have any IP ratings unfortunately. According to Xiaomi it offers:

      Splash-resistant nano-coating
      Take everyday accidents in stride

      • Any comments on MIUI 10? Is it bloatware or is it close to vanilla?

        • +1

I don't mind it too much but it is iOS inspired and doesn't have an app drawer, but that's going to be included in MIUI 11 that is now rolling out. This page gives you an idea on the features.

Given this phone has a Qualcomm Snapdragon over a MediaTek SoC, custom ROMs will be plenty in no time.

          • @Clear: MIUI 11 certainly looks pretty good. I might jump on this deal.

Custom ROMs will kill NFC I presume? I recall this happened on a phone i flashed ~2 years.

            • +1

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Can't speak for Xiaomi specifically, but I've had no trouble with NFC on my LeEco Le Pro 3 running Lineage OS. Had to install Magisk and use the Hide feature as some banking apps thought I was rooted (I wasn't), but after that, I was fine.

Edit: This all assumes that the custom ROM doesn't have NFC as a known missing feature, of course.

              • @Nightshade: Good to know, cheers! Lineage was what I ran on the old fine so was keen to give it another whirl. I obviously did something wrong to lose NFC, or maybe that particular ROM was missing it. It was 2-3 years ago I guess.

        • +1

I have never seen any "bloatware" in any MIUI including 11. It may be there but I have not gone looking for it. Personally I feel that MIUI is better than "vanilla" as it makes the shoe of android fit the Xiaomi product better.
I am yet to see anything worthwhile listening to about MIUI "problems".
Regardless of UI's there are always rom fiddlers that want to change just out of boredom… nothing wrong with that if it gives you a buzz.

      • +6

Man, you're good! Over and above effort

    • +1

      Novalauncher is the best

  • Selling same model in China just 799rmb exchange to Aud$160

    • How do you get it for that price delivered?

    • +3

And is it the international/global version with b28?

    • +3

I checked Xiaomi China and they're not even selling this phone.

Edit: I double checked with Xiaomi. The Redmi Note 8T is not sold within China and is being sold in their overseas stores. Are you sure you wasn't looking at the Redmi Note 8?

      • i think it’s same of redmi note 8, t means international version. But higher price

        • +1

There are differences, e.g. global bands like B28, NFC in the 8T and Global ROM.

    • Not global so no Google play store on Chinese model

    • Where is 799? I just bought Redmi Note 8 for rmb999 2 weeks ago :(

    • A friend just returned from China.. bought a phone there on impulse in Beijing for $250.
I had recommended Xiaomi to him so that is what he got. The phone has MI branded on one side but the internals are something completely different. $250 paperweight…

  • Any deals on the oneplus 7t?

    • +1

Potentially. What sort of price range are you after?

  • omg this is too soon. $600-650 is what I've been waiting for. I'm trying to get myself comfortable with the camera bump/design since the pro model is outside my budget.

    • I'm going to assume that's in AUD right?

      • +1

Sorry forgot to clarify - yes

  • +1

    This or lgv20 for 250?

    • +2

      This

        Definitely this

Is this an upgrade from an iPhoneX ?

    • lol

    • +1

Yes. Any Android with split tasking > any iphone

    • Yes…

  • Can't think of a reason not to buy

    • +2

One reason.. mrs will kill me if i buy another phone :-(

  • Thanks OP.
    Bought one, but:
    Grand Total: AUD 251.69
    And
    Expected Cashback
    AUD 8.30

Which makes it AUD 243.39 after cashback for me.
Still needed a new phone so thanks.

    • Did you buy in USD using no nasty fee card? That's what has been the problem for a few other people. Still - looks to be very decent value at the price you've paid.

  • +1

    Amazing deal

  • need tablet!! 4g or 10"

    • +2

I can recommend the Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Plus that excels with one of the many, many custom ROMs. I'm happy to ask GeekBuying for a price.

      • please please please! black friday or cyber monday price!

      • Also interested in a Mi Pad 4 deal too!

  • +3

This may be a better deal - Redmi Note 8 Pro 6GB+64GB, US$163 + tax, use coupon FBJD55
    https://www.joybuy.com/600967095.html

    • Good spot doperst. What's the expiration on that code? Wondering if it's worth waiting until Friday…

      • I believe the code is for extra $10 off, don't know when it expires.

    • Looks like this one's missing B28.

    • +3

The Redmi Note 8 Pro has a Mediatek CPU which is somewhat inferior

    • +2

Apparently, it's a Chinese version, not global.

  • well i mean, it sucks that they now offer b28 and nfc. pretty much all you would ever need from a phone now.
for the price, you get alot of phone and dont forget the 4000mhz battery. wish i didnt get a note 7 earlier in the year :(

not sure what criticisms can be made on the redmi note series now, apart from MIUI but if thats not you thing just flash it.
sure the camera will always be a weak point, but people are this price point know that the camera is going to be sacraficed on

    • +4

      4000mhz battery.

      wow, that's a fast battery! :)

      • heh, u knew what i meant :)

  • How does this compare to other phones in terms of camera and image quality? https://www.dxomark.com/

I'm looking for a phone that can replace my iPhone 7 in terms of that.

    • A3 might be a better bet. I have one, it gets terrible reviews because of the screen however in all honesty I can barely notice the different. I have to stick my face right up next to it to tell.

The 8T probably has the same Samsung processor as the 8, whereas the Sony should yield better results.

    • There are photo samples on the net.

  • Why isn't oled standard in almost 2020? My $600 s6 edge from this deal had it https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/229916 , almost 4 years ago wtf.

    • Redmi is the budget brand. You'll find AMOLED in their flagship Mi range.

  • I'm not very knowledgeable on current phones, but is this one of the better options if my budget is say $400? Seems like a really good deal for the specs it has, but I haven't owned a Xiaomi product before, nor have I bought a phone from overseas before. Just wanting something with a good battery life and decent performance eg. not lag when I open a simple app! cough moto cough

    Thoughts?

    • +2

For your budget, you could get a Xiaomi Mi mid-range phone. Redmi is their budget range.

    • +1

You would be more than happy with this phone. It is a real bargain at this price and has everything you could wish for. Build quality and performance will amaze you for the money. Get one. The Mi phones suppose to be higher spec/quality but you would not notice it. Save your $. Get one!!

  • Can we also order screen protector that can be included in the free priority shipping

  • +1

    Perfect.
Also should stack with this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/498350

    ~$221 after cash backs.

  • Does this have full play store rights/compatibility?

Only other problem I've had with xiaomi is the inability to use Netflix from the play store. Also, sometimes Netflix just flat out doesn't work - widevine?

    • I know the other phones in this series are supposed to be Widevine L1 but Netflix has been seeing those as Widevine L3. So Netflix probably hasn't approved the devices themselves.

Google Play shouldn't be an issue as this is officially GMS certified.

    • What phone are you using? Doesn't sound right at all

      • This was happening on a Redmi Note 4

        • On a true global RN4 or a CN reflashed version? In about phone what model number does it show?

  • Looks like the Redmi Note 8T was supposed to be a European version of the Redmi Note 8. If this is the case which would be a better option for AU?
    8 or 8T ?

    • +2

      Definitely the 8T

    • +1

Where did that tale come from? 8T built for euro ?? The 8T for sale here would have a model number ending in H… which means global with enhanced network capability, ie B28.

  • The price is a little cheaper than Note 8 on AliExpress once you factor in GST + youdon't have to wait several weeks.

Snapcom 665 supports all of the non-Apple Bluetooth codecs (great if you have Sony noise cancelling headphones). You also get a headphone jack and micro SD card slot, something missing in other 2019 released Xiomi phones.

  • I still think older flagships are a better deal than these mid rangers. Better specs, premium design and most of the time, more features.

    • +1

Yeh that's what I'm thinking as well. After the initial 1-2 year sweetspot of deprecation they become excellent value.

    • Which flagship has been discounted to < $250?

      • +1

You can get plenty of great SD835 phones (LG V30, HTC U11) and SD821 phones (LG G6, V20, Google Pixel) off reputable eBay sellers, prices ranging from $250-300 and $150-250 respectively.

  • This vs 9t?

  • +1

Great buy for Americans, our dollar sux.
