If we ignore price, this vs LG G7thinq or LG v30+?

    • +2

I have the v30+ and I'm looking at this, for battery weakness in the V30+ alone

      • Yeah I can't see any reason to not buy this other than MIUI. Which I can nova launcher and then eventually custom ROM.

        • MIUI is fine.

  • +3

You really have spoiled the fun for the ever twitching "no B28, NFC, dealbreaker" brigade with this post.

    • +2

Also the "no headphone jack, no deal", and maybe also the "no separate SD card slot, no deal" whinges too. (at least from gsmarena it seems to have a dedicated separate SD card, not SD card shared with SIM 2 like most phones, but it's hard to verify that because the phone is no new that there don't seem be pics showing the SIM tray for the Note 8T, and the mi.com site does not seem to help with answering this either).

And it looks like the bootloader can be unlocked in the Note 8, so hopefully the same would apply to the Note 8T. Then hopefully the custom ROMs will come later.

The main whinge left is that it's not sold in Australia - so no ACL or 2 year warranty or price protection through a suitable credit card. If they could sort that out and get their local Mi store or other local retailers to sell for similar prices here, it would basically tick off every single whinge box.

  • I've heard some Mi phones have ads which we cannot disable. Does this one have it too?

    e.g. https://www.androidauthority.com/xiaomi-miui-ads-906902/

  • Does the account in geekbuying, paypal and cashrewards needs to match on the same name to get the cash back ?
I have the acount in Gekkbuying but my wife doesnt but she will be using her paypal and cashrewards account

    • Shouldn't be a problem.

  • Should I change the currency to USD in Gekkbuying? so it will show up I am paying fixed $166.00 USD and since I am using ctibank Plus. I will not be charge with any other fees except citibank will only use their exhange rate ?

If I leave it as AUD in geekbuying currency, it shows up as around ~$251 AUD

    • +3

Set it to USD on GeekBuying. Then you should have your CC added to your PayPal and set it use its own currency conversion. That way you won't get ripped off by PayPal's inflated exchange rate and will have their protection.

      • Thanks for the reminder. I almost forgot about that setting.

        • Turn this one on too :)

      • paypal seems chnaged the procedure in paying foreign currency. The link provided no longer updated or apply.
I was trying to find out and follow the procedure on the link you provided but it seems paypal change the process.

Once you make a payment in paypal, you click on " See currency options "

It will show you if you want to pay in AUD "$255.57" or in USD which shows "$166USD".

I guess i need to pick the $166 USD and let citibank plus do the foreign conversion.

Everytime you make a purchase in foreign currency, you need to select if you want to pay in AUD or foreign currency.

Why has this post exploded while the Redmi Note 8T $239 delivered from tobydeals last week barely raised a ripple? Are these different variants? I have one currently in transit.

    • Because with cashback this deal is cheaper.

      • Okay thanks for clarifying. Was concerned there was a fundamental difference in handset! $2.67 isn't too bothersome.

      • Tobydeals has 1.5% cashback so pretty much same same. Tobydeals took a long ass time to post mine though. Only dispatched last night, and i placed the order last wednesday.

      • I made a purchse today and in few minutes i got notified it charged $244.41 on my account.
Make sure you change to USD in geekbuying to show it coast $166.00 and in paypal to change to USD during payment.

Hopefully no drama in cashrewards tracking and cashback.

Let see if the express delivery takes upto 8 business day.

        • Important to remember shipping excludes the processing time.

  • Can I use wired headphones with this somehow, adapter?

    • +1

      There is 3.5mm jack

  • is this better or iPhone 7 Plus?

  • Now need to shop for a screen protector, any recommendation for anyone who already made a purchase?

    • Meh it's gorilla glass 5 and costs ~$240. I'm keeping my nakey.

  • Holding on for a deal on the Mi 9 Lite in the next couple of days. If nothing comes up will get this. Can't live with my Moto anymore!

  • Is this version better suited to certain mobile providers?

Currently got a Optus personal SIM and Telstra work SIM

    • +1

You can find the frequencies used in Australia here. Basically both Telstra and Optus have full 4G coverage with this phone.

  • +1

Great effort. Not a fan of geekbuying but you are good.

  • Be aware that these guys take forever to ship. I placed an order on 14th Nov and it is still not shipped - just asked for a refund

  • Not sure if I should get this or wait for more Black Friday deal to be announced?

    • I'm waiting till the weekend for a better or matched price from the competition and hopefully an uplift in Cash Back from one or both providers.

  • If you could buy a second hand pixel 3 for the same price; which phone would be better?

  • How does this compare with an iphone 7?
I have a cracked screen and thinking about repairing it or maybe getting this.

  • Has anyone's shipped yet?

    • Sitting in Processing.
Wish under Order Details it would tell me the type of shipping I selected. I know I selected the priority service but cannot see it anywhere.

Cashrewards also has not recognised the purchase which is a little worrying.

    • No still processing for me too

    • +1

Mine has. AusPost have advised of expected delivery this week.

I probably pushed the button relatively early on this - so it might be a stock-on-hand issue.

OR, it could be because you didn't give the deal at +ve? ;-))

    • +1

My shipping advice has come through at 2 pm today.

      • +1

Yep got my delivery note as well.
Will be tracking that connote very closely :)

      • When did you place your order?

Mine still showing as Pending/no update from AustPost

        • On 17track.net/en change the carrier to UBI as it'll show more accurate tracking than Auspost.

        • Auspot status says parcel is coming

  • Bought on Nov 26
    Shipping Method: Australia Priority Line
    Shipping Date: Nov 29, 2019

Australia post website to check the tracking number provided: Pending / no update

Same. Pending / no update as well.

      Very slow.

      • Who negged?

Is 6 business days to obtain tracking information quick in your opinion? Come out and defend yourself :)

  • Do we need to pay tax to claim this from aust Post?

    • No as its value does not exceed $1000 AU.

  • Ok finally received my tracking no.

    Your parcel is coming

      Same

Hopefully it arrives soon. A bit annoying when I'm used to Amazon delivering within 1 business day lol.

  • Arrived today! Pretty good turnaround when not having to pay extra for a better delivery experience.

    • When did you bought the phone?

I bought mine last Nov 26.

AusPost status still for few days now:

      Your parcel is coming

      Looks like still in HongKong:

      17track website shows:
2019-12-04 20:25 HONG KONG, UPLIFTED FROM TRANSSHIPMENT HUB

      • 26 Nov. Pretty early in the day. My AusPost status was pretty uninformative for the first few days as well.

  • I didnt get any confirmation/email from CashRewards regarding my cashback.
It only shows the Click History on GeekBuying.

    • Odd. Mine tracked very quickly.

      • +1

Im opening a ticket so Cashrewards. I read back and few also didnt get any tracing confirmation frmo cashrewards.
I recently bought the pizza and it was tracked in a few minutes.

  • +1

Mine arrived today. Happy with it so far.

    • -1

      Mine arrive today.

Performance is sluggish compre to my old Redmi Note 3. Scrolling/side swipe/typing is delayed and too slow to react.
I tried updating MUIU as it says it has optimization patches but still sluggish.

Not sure what else I can do ? factory reset?

Cashrewards hasnt respond to my tracking. Geekbuying was in my clock history but no tracking confirmation recieved from CashRewards

      • no response from cashrewards up to now

  • Has anyone got VOLTE working? Several websites indicate dualsim VOLTE but it's not working nor is there an option to enable it?

I've tested the SIM just now on another phone and it works so it's not that…

    • Who is your provider?

      • Boost.

Works fine on a Samsung A20.

I've manually carrier disabled via the dialler codes VoLTE "##86583##" VoWiFi/WLAN "* ##869434##*" and then enabled via sim card settings but no difference.

Edit ozbargain formatting changes the codes.

        • I haven't been able to find and exact answer but I know with Telstra they only allow approved devices.

Perhaps try the Boost support and see if they need to do anything on their end.

  • FYI MIUI 11 update just arrived last night

    • My Note 5 / Oreo was upgraded to MIUI 11 last night but this new Note 8T / Pie 9 is still with MIUI 10 and it says it is upto date on MUIU 10.

      • Tried updating manually in settings? I ran the update days ago when I got it, and the 11 update popped up on its own yesterday.

        • hmm… looks like somethings wrng with what I bought (note 8T). The performance is sluggish. I didnt do anythnig special when it arrives, I power it no and it setup and did some updates but at the moment t is on Andorid 9 and MUIU 10. It says MIUI is currently updated at 10.

The camera zoom using fingers to zoon in and out is sluggish. taking photo is delayed as well (not happy with its over all performance). Battery life also drain within the day even it is not heavily used.

Sometimes swiping the screen left/right is also slow to react.

          • @atlinus: Yeah, you posted that already.

I'm not getting anything like what you've describing. I'm finding the phone incredibly fast. Camera is great. Big upgrade compared to the Samsung A20 I was using as a temp.

            Cashrewards was tracked quickly.

            Can't help you sorry.

  • Anyone cna point me to Xiaomi support in australia? or how could I raise and ask for help if the brand new phone bought at Geek Buying performance is slow out of the box. It was configured and it updates but it only update to Miui 10 and it says stable and it is the lastet update — unlike others posting here it was able to update to MIUI 11.

    • It's geekbuying you should be asking, since they sold it. Just like if you buy grey import Samsung, official Samsung Australia won't touch it.

      • Geekbuying chat support told me to return to local store and i told them i bought the phone to them why asking me to return to local store…. then said to send ot back to geekbuying and dont even bother try to resolve. It looks like the cust rep doesnt know what he is talking about.

I was asking they pay the return shipping but didnt reply back on chat…

Spund like useless talking to their cjat support.

Anyone experience sending back an item to geekbuying and getting a refund?

  • I left note 8T fully charge in the evening.
Only wifi is on and nothing else running.
It was battery optimize in the settings.

After 7hrs(wake up in the morning), it is down to 65% battery. 45% battery used in idle mode through out the night.

Is this normal? I find it unusual if i compare it to my note 5 (still have 75% battery even i used it for playing mobile games last night)

    • 65% + 35% = 100%
      65% + 45% not 100%

      • Sorry, should be 35% used while idle for 7 hrs.

Comparing to my note5 which was loaded with apps and i used it playing mobile games and only took 25% of the battery.

The controls in playing same mobile game too was delayed on note 8T.

I decided for a refund and geekbuying rep says they will refund as well the return postage.

  • Phone arrived late Friday, just as I was heading out the door for a family trip.
Took it with me to load some games to play while I was away.
Used it from Friday to Monday with no issues.

Arrived home yesterday afternoon, let it update all the apps and download everything it needed to from WiFi.

Now it restarts randomly and I cannot make a pattern out of it. I used it for an hour or so playing games last night and no restart. Sat it down for a few mins and I watched it restart twice.

Is there anyway to check logs or something to find out if its an app thats causing it to restart?

    • I would factory reset the phone than spending time troubleshooting.

Thats what i did, still i had problems with its performance like touch screen response time when capturing photo and browsing and playing mobile fsmes which i dont encounter using my note5plus. Annoying and embarrasing talking photo in an event and other people asking what taking so long until they said use their phone instead (embarrassing)

I decided for refund. First time im doing refund hope it goes smooth.

      • Will give that a go at some point.
Touch wood it has not reset again today.
Performance for me has been fine for what I do but I think my old phone's performance probably set my expectations low.

        Good luck with the refund.

        • I felt like when I factory reset the performance gets a little better and removes some of the apps. But still experiencing slow repsonse form time to time even I havent installed any apps except for the mobile gme i tested and browsing and capturing of photo/video.

Photo was excellent but the time you press captureing a poto to the time it takes the actual photo was delayed and its performance is inconsistent I dont want to hope so I process the refund.

I actually give it as a gift to my wife but when she brings it to their office xmas event and taking photo takes a long time. Imagine how embarrassing your officemates posing for a photo and it takes a while for you to capture the moment until they offer to use their phone camera as why it takes you so long to take photo was embarassing.

Same with capturing video when we missed the special moment when our son was called on stage for an award as it takes over 10-15secs after you press the capture button before it starts recording (no microsd).

  • Anyone know if there is any decent ROMs for the Note 8T?
Or do the Note 8 ROMs work?
