Does my sons birthday right after Christmas count?

    • +56

Hi, as you are buying for your son, will add some useful stuff with that. Hope that helps.

  • I'm thinking of buying a PC for my son for Xmas. What games can this machine run or is it more for office application? Are you able to tell me what Video card comes with it?

    • +4

      Intel hd 4600 (integrated)

You likely need to add extra ram and low profile graphics card for gaming

      The questions required would be
Is ram expandable? Only 8 or 16 (remove old 4gb?)

What low profile graphics can fit in (power supply supported higher spec?)

      • +5

        4 ram slots

        hd4600 "ok" for 720p cs:go / dota2 / lol
        or fornite 30fps

        can fit low profile 1650 super / 1650 / 1050Ti / 1050 / 1030 gddr5 / 1030 ddr4 / 750Ti / 750 / 740 / 730 gddr5 / 730 ddr3 / 710

but if you spend too much upgrading, might as well get techfast 3200g build for 470 and sell the rx580 for 180 = 290 , performs similar to 1030 gddr5

    • +2

Would suggest a techfast build it offers much more performance on games and a better video card. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/493444

  • +4

    nice pensioner unit

    • +33

2 weeks ago we sold 5 units to a buyer and he bought them for old age home as Christmas gift. Thats why I thought to offer additional discount for good causes when possible.

      • +9

        i am the pensioner

    • Nice for anyone who does not need recent 3-D games.

But if used daily, 8GB and an SSD would be worthwhile for a smoother experience,

      Would cost maybe $80 more.

      • where are you getting 8gb ram + ssd for $80 more?

I think it would cost a lot more than that..

which would make it getting closer to the techfast deals which are a lot more better and powerful

        • +1

          example: $231

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Optiplex-9020-SFF-Desktop-P…

The techfast deals are great if you want a gaming PC, rather than office/HTPC.

          • @bargaino: well there is nothing stopping using a gaming pc as an office/htpc

the problem is when you add in
            -low profile gpu e.g 1050
            -extra ram
            -ssd

the cost adds up to close a techfast pc
but much less powerful due to the gpu

            • @pinkybrain: You seem to be missing the point that these are much better quality if you don't play games.
              There is no graphics card.
If you do want 3D shoot-em-ups, then get the techfast.

  • It's a shame these office spec units didn't come with HDMI as standard

    • +6

DisplayPort is just as common and preferable in offices. A simple DisplayPort to HDMI cable will fix that.

      • +1

Oh I didn't know disport handled audio also

        • +1

DVI lacks audio. DP and HDMI are both extensions of DVI which include audio.

          • @bargaino: Interesting to know I thought it operated in the same way as a DVI port. Cheers for the input

          • -1

@bargaino: Even DVI does audio if doing DVI -> HDMI

            • -2

@mith: No it doesn't. DVI spec is video only.

      • Yes, and DP can daisy chain multiple displays as well.

  • Great deal, I bought 3x 9010s and they have all been working dependably for a while now. 1 is used as a HTPC and is near silent. Never had any driver issues and performance has been great, admittedly with an SSD and 8GB RAM.

    • +1

how much was paid for it?

can the 9010 play 4k/1080p hevc + HDR 10bit smoothly?

yeah the 4gb of ram and no ssd would make this system quite slow and not very usable with windows 10.

      • Also curious for the above questions

      • No, built in graphics doesn't support 4k, nor HDR. You'll need at least a GT1030 for that.
You might be able to decode 1080p HVEC/H265 on an i5, but not 4k without support from a hardware accelerated GPU like a 1030.

        • so the 9020 will also have the same limitation and will need a gpu like GT 1030 to play 4k hevc hdr 10 bit videos?

if I add that card it would cost about $100+ more

so that would make it more expensive than nvidia shield etc..
if I add in extra ram and ssd to this deal.

is the shield able to play smoothly 4k hevc hdr 10 bit videos?

      • Sorry, a bit late, but as opt said - no 4k output, no HDR either. Paid ~$200 for the 9010 with 8GB RAM and put a 120GB SSD in there (<$30 now).

I originally used the 9010 as a HTPC with a 1080p panel. I've now upgraded to an LG OLED so it still gets used as as an Emby server and does a very good job of that. No transcoding at all though.

  • Hey all, I'm not the best with PC but I'm looking to get one of this for general everyday usage and any probably play sims 4 as well (don't judge pls). I'm not quite sure if the integrated graphics of this (Intel HD Graphics 4600) would meet the minimum requirement of the sims 4's video card : NVIDIA GeForce 6600 or ATI Radeon X1300 or Intel GMA X4500?

    • Friend, it should be fine. Those gpus are older than this machine and the gma x4500 is an igpu, a lot weaker than the one on this. Still like others have said an extra 4gb (not so much for sims but other tasks) and an ssd would go a long way in this build.

      • Thank you. With the RAM, I could probably just install one on my own right? Or even the graphics card if ever.

        • You can definitely add 4GB RAM (or more), you may find used stock off eBay is the cheapest place.

Graphics card can be upgraded to a limited range of low profile cards which don't draw too much power from the inbuilt PSU. Certainly achievable and others have done so.

  • Sorry for newbie question, but would want to replace the HDD with a SSD, is this easy to transfer windows to the new drive?

    • Hi, you just need a bootable USB drive and you can install Windows into new SSD straight away.

      • +3

Do you need a key for the installation. I'm looking at the computer for my kids to learn word processing on.

        • +2

You don't need a key to install, you can "activate" afterwards and it should recognize the PC was previously authorized.

    • +1

Just use something like AOMEI Partition Assistant (Free version) to migrate the OS from the HDD to the SSD, no need to reinstall.

  • What are the limitations of this?

Would it be fine for multi tab web browsing, media and word processing?

    • +3

The RAM would be the main limitation, adding another 4GB (total 8GB) would be best.

      • how much would extra 4gb cost?

most computer sellers only selling 8gb etc..

the other issue is this has a hdd which would be quite slow
so need to add an ssd as well.

$20 cheaper for a CPU that's one generation older but with 8GB RAM and 120GB SSD.

        • I believe you need PC3-12800 RAM for this, a 4GB stick is around $35, and 8GB around $55. Search in staticice, plenty of sellers have 4GB sticks.

An SSD is also a must these days. Get a small ~120GB one for the OS and frequently used apps, then use the already included HDD for your data. A 120GB SSD costs around $30.

          • @opt: Aren't there only 2 SATA connections? One drive + DVD? Or am I thinking of something else…

    • +1

Would it be fine for multi tab web browsing, media and word processing?

Absolutely, even without a RAM upgrade.
If you were to upgrade, I'd swap out the HDD for an SSD before looking at RAM.

  • Is this suitable in place of an NUC for recording
    24/7 cameras?

    • +1

Probably, but will use substantially more electricity.

  • How much would you charge to add another 4GB of RAM please?

    Thanks.

    • You can easily upgrade this, just lift the hatch it put it in -
A 4GB stick is roughly $23 USD (~$33 AUD) from crucial.
Lots of tutorials on the net

      • Plus us$25 shipping, no?

With all the ram types, easiest for most people to buy a PC with 8GB already in.
Currently $189 from bneacttrader on ebay. Then add your own new SSD, say $40 for 250GB.

        • Wasn't aware Crucial's shipping was US $25, would not have suggested if I knew.

With all the ram types, easiest for most people to buy a PC with 8GB already in.

          Fair enough.

Currently $189 from bneacttrader on ebay. Then add your own new SSD, say $40 for 250GB.

          Yeah

Could always keep the main drive and do what I do -
I replaced the DVD Bay with a 2.5" drive slot thing… use a 120gb SSD for boot only so I can keep my main HDD in too

          • @CC123: Is your HDD a 3.5"? Normally there is room for 2x2.5" drives (ssd+hdd) as well as the DVD.
I still use my dvd burner for backups.

            • @bargaino: My main HDD is 3.5"
The SSD in the DVD bay is 2.5"

The models may have a different layout as I have an Optiplex 990 SFF and this is a 9020

    • -1

I got my 4gb desktop for 20 dollars on ebay. Sodimm might me more

      • 4gb ddr3

  • A word of caution. The last place I worked had a couple of clients with these in their fleet and the staff hated them. The performance is dire. You'll want to double the RAM and swap the HDD for an SSD as an absolute minimum. Video card if you want to play a game, ever.

    • It really depends on what you want to do with it.
An SSD would certainly make it more responsive. 4GB is enough for browsing/office tasks.
I agree about gaming, you'd need a GPU unless you're running retro games.

      • I picked one of these up for $50 with a 120GB SSD. Added another 8 GB RAM (12GB total) and a GTX 1050 Ti graphics (low profile) card and this thing handles everything I throw at it including 1080p gaming on medium/high settings with modern games 60fps. If your sole purpose is for gaming your better off with a console though.

        • Added another 8 GB RAM (12GB total) and a GTX 1050 Ti graphics (low profile) card cost maybe $250 more?

    • If you replace the corporate windows build and do a clean install an i5 Gen 4 is a rocket. Add an 4gb ram and SSD and it will do anything except gaming.

  • 2034: these are great for your parents!

  • +1

Dell will list officially as only 16gb ram max but its bull just to sell more expensive models to business. I have one with 32gb ram, 4x 8g DDR3

    these are awesome

    • how much are these going for?

  • This would be a great machine for running PFsense (Router): Supports AES_NI, 2 half-sized PCI-E slots for NICs, Gigabit Ethernet, Respectable Hardware.

  • i want one to connect to my TV. Anyone tell me is it safe to buy this? does it come with hdmi and wifi? are there better options? ill be using this for downloading movies, Netflix and browsing or maybe some adobe Lightroom or Photoshop.

    • Doesn't have an HDMI port, but you can get a cheap display port to HDMI adaptors from eBay. However, if you want to run your TV @4K then you'll need to add a low profile graphics card as well. Doesn't have built in Wi-Fi either, so you need to get a USB Wi-Fi adaptor, and finally at least another 4GB of RAM. But even with those upgrades this will be still considerably cheaper than building or buying a new comparable PC.

  • Stock updated. Thanks.

  • I bought this for $269 last year, with 8gb RAM. Threw an SSD and 1050ti in there and it's a perfect kids gaming PC, and good for a bit of photo editing. It's quiet, reliable and no issues with Windows drivers, plays Portal 2 full graphics and Forza looks great too.

Only bummer is no Bluetooth or WiFi built-in.

  • No more stock

    • Will check and update stock shortly if available.

Odd case but is anyone running esxi on these?

  • +1

I'm really interested in getting one for my grandparents, any chance you can reduce the price any further? How would we go ahead with this? Thanks.

    • +2

      Buddy, it's $160 (inc shipping)…

  • Just updated the store with similar Hp SFF and the price is same. Please check the link: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/123970316930

  • Thanks. Purchased one for my parents.

BUYER BEWARE THE LINK IS FOR Hp Elitedesk 800 G1 NOT DELL OPTIPLEX SFF 9020, YES THE SPEC ARE THE SAME, but the Hp Elitedesk 800 G1 is lack of gpu slot and uses diferent ram factor not ur usual ones..

    • -2

They even have this listed in the add "This laptop is in great working condition and comes with 3 months warranty. Postage within Australia only. Pickup not available."

    • +1

Jeeze, he posted a comment in the post and in the thread stating he was doing that. Why neg because you can't read???

  • Does the HP one need different ram?

  • Hi,

I'm looking for a work PC that will be used for the following:

    • Web multi-tab browsing up to 6-8 tabs simultaneously
    • Word processing
    • Multiple users logged in, up to 4 at a time
    • Very occasional spreadsheet work and basic photo processing

We are currently using a Dell laptop with 8GB RAM, Windows 10, an AMD A6-9200 processor, and a mechanical hard drive. This computer is and has always been very slow performance-wise (e.g., even loading pdfs takes considerable time).

I am looking to update to something like this:

Would something like this be appropriate? or perhaps something like this? https://www.graysonline.com/lot/0009-2178465/computers-and-i…

    Our budget is $500.

We would like the unit to be fairly future-proof.
