    Just a heads up:

The JR Pass must be used within one month after redemption

So can’t buy for April trip then?

      • +24

Is your trip within 3 months?

    • Absolutely correct, klook at least is pretty good and has you input travel dates as part of checkout and I assume kicks you out if it's too far in advance. Did mine a couple of months back, just got shopback rebate for it, tickets turned up in a day or two.

  • Tried to use it, but it says it's not available in my country/region. I put in Aus delivery.

    • +5

Someone from the last deal I posted mentioned that you need to ensure an Australian mobile number is used in your profile.

      • Cheers, worked like a charm, although it would have been nicer before they added the 10% Olympic tax Last month.

  • Thanks, my 3 weeks trip to Japan will start from mid Dec.

  • ahhh crap…already purchased my tickets for my Dec travel…

  • +4

Damn, I don’t know whether to buy or wait and see if Klook has a deal for either Click Frenzy or Black Friday. Last Click Frenzy event was 15% off

    • I'm interested to know about this too. Do you know if the last Click Frenzy or Black Friday 15% sale included rail passes?

      • Last Click Frenzy was 15% off all Japan activities including Rail Passes, which stacked with 10% Shopback. Was such a good deal!

        • I searched for the last black friday sale for Klook and the discount was only 10%.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/419199

15% + 10% shopback is great but another click frenzy sale might not come up in the next few months…

          • @Magicmagic: Click Frenzy Mayhem is on the 12th

            • @ThatKiwiFella: Thanks, I think I'll wait for 12th then

              • @Magicmagic: I noticed today that in the fine print it says “this is part of the Click Frenzy Travel EDM campaign”. Might be worth grabbing it. You can use Shopback too, they’ve added the promo to their website

when i went to japan earlier this year, i found the pass is almost same price if i have purchased all my tickets seperately. so it may not save you much money.

    • +6

It saves you a lot of money if you plan on using the Shinkansen a lot.

      • Yeah. Wife and I spent just under $1,000 on 3 Shinkansen.

Travel agent said to us we didn’t need a JR pass this time round

        Tokyo -> Kyoto approx 28,000¥
        Kyoto -> Hiroshima approx 24,000¥
        Hiroshima -> Kyoto approx 24,000¥

        • Was considering catching a coach on the way back from Hiroshima. It was like $25AUD for both of us lol. But it would’ve been an 8 hour trip

    • +1

Honestly it depends on your utilization. My last trip, the JR pass more than covered Tokyo - Osaka - Kyoto - Osaka - Tokyo, everything else was just gravy.

    • +1

Depending on duration and the number of major towns you're visiting, it may work out cheaper buying the tickets rather than a pass.

This is a good calculator to check your itinerary:
      https://www.japan-guide.com/railpass/

      • -1

Doesn't seem like the default prices are shinkansen prices so not overly accurate?

IE tokyo -> osaka 500 yen or 7 or so AUD

        • +2

Not sure what you're seeing, shows 13,500-14,000 for me for tokyo-osaka.

You still want to use the calculator though, if you're just doing tokyo-kyoto and back with little side trips it's not worthwhile usually, but a few side trips changes that quickly.

          • @mattman: My mistake - was Kyoto to Osaka being 500 yen which surprised me but seems accurate.

We got a 21 day pass and are doing Tokyo -> Kyoto -> Osaka - > Hiroshima -> Yuzawa -> Tokyo and will be using some other benefits like the local trains, hop on buses and miyajima ferry through JR ferry so we'll get our money's worth for sure

            • @Duplicity: Kyoto to Osaka are like right next to each other, not surprising that that trip is cheap.

    • This is why its recommended to use a JR pass calculator before buying. For example my upcoming 22 day trip more than covers the 14 days pass but not the 21 day one.

For European trains it might be worth taking a look at Seat61's advice before booking any euro rail passes, even if on 'sale'. Apparently it's sometimes cheaper to book direct with the local operator, depending on if you're booking in advance or not.

Not as good as previous 15% + 10% cashback or even 15% cashback

    • +2

But it’s better than nothing, especially how JR Passes rarely go on sale.

  • Do Klook use standard postage or tracked postage with DHL/Fedex etc?

    • +2

Tracked DHL Express letter. My JR Passes came from China but came overnight.

      • Thanks! How long after you ordered did they send you the tracking details?

        • Don't recall getting the tracking number but it was a trackable type thing… if there were problems I'm sure Klook could fill you in. Got it in like 2 days tops though, i was surprised how fast.

(actually might have been toll sorry, it's been a while)

          • +1

@mattman: I ordered a couple of weeks ago and delivered within 2 days via DHL. I wasn't emailed tracking though.

  • Ah dammit, I just bought mine last week.

    • Same for me.

    • Same :'(

  • -2

for JR pass try HIS first. They're always the cheapest and you can pick up same day.

  • Got it, cheers OP!

  • Got two as well. Hopefully Cash Rewards 1% cashback works.

  • cheers OP, good timing

  • Leaving Jan 31, just in time, needed a 3 week pass and $70~ off the next cheapest I could find is nice.

  • Will this be charged as an international transaction? They look to be based in Hong Kong.

    • +1

Yes, there will be an international transaction fee

  • Has anyone had any issue setting their Country code to something different?

There’s a code “EXPLORE70” which works if I set my Country code to Singapore. It still allows me to send to my New Zealand address. It takes off $80 NZD from a 14 day pass which equates to about 12%. Will this cause me any issue?

  • I find that the all Japan and JR East passes are generally poor value, but JR West Passes have great value (esp. the Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass).

If you are going between Kyoto and Tokyo one way and not stopping in the middle, Platt Kodama tickets are exceptionally priced.

    https://www.jrtours.co.jp/kodama/english/

    • all Japan pass

      generally poor value

Depends how fast you travel. If you city hop every day or two on say a 2-3 week pass, it works out amazing. Throw in a night on the Sunrise Seto/Izumo if you can work it with your schedule (and admittedly if free nobinobi seats are still available when you land and exchange your pass) and you're saving big ¥¥¥.

      • If you city hop every day or two on say a 2-3 week pass, it works out amazing

True, if you like to do that consecutively. I don't actually like moving around that much - it makes the trip feel rushed and you never have enough time to explore properly.

If it's worth staying I'll stay 2+ days, and if its not worth staying I'll give it half a day if its close (so I don't need a pass for Shinkansen) or avoid entirely/leave it for next time if its too far.

If you look at EU Rail Passes for example, most of them are non-consecutive days, so they fit better for me - but even then I found it cheaper just to book my 10+ rail segments individually.

  • Dang, leaving in like 93 days :(

  • ANyone advise if we should pay in USD or AUD? Goes to paypall in AUD if you slect this currency which I guess means they are doing the converion beforehand at what rate?

    • I paid in AUD with no problems no extra conversion fees, paid what shows on the website.

  • Stacked with Shopback (1.5%). Got $17 cashback for two 21 day rail passes.

  • +1

Anyone wanting a tracking number can email their support. They responded to me in <1 hr.

  • Anyone know if there is going to be another sale on JR pass anytime soon?

    • +1

Nope. Just keep checking OzBargain every once in a while. Do note cash-back (into your bank account) can take a very very long time.
