  • Newshosting was $20 per year not long ago, I wonder if they will do a Black Friday special again.

    • Yeah many sites did Black Fri for around $30 for a year, but price could have gone up since then

    • I got NGD to price match them when they did this special, plus they beat them by 10%. So only costs me US$18 a year now.

      • nice one.
now let me contact newshosting about your $18 deal….

The first rule of Usenet - You do not talk about Usenet.

    • This rule has been done to death. Any new ones around??

      • +1

Apparently there is a second rule, but no one knows what it is because of the first rule.

  • This or stay with newsninja?

  • Am I the only one who still torrents?

    • Its good to have variety

    • I know lots of people on private trackers who use usenet as well.
Plenty of uploads that people put on trackers are found on usenet.

    • +2

Torrents are so much effort to use for everything, especially when torrents require a VPN.

Been out of the loop. Any good NZB indexers? I remember NZB Matrix was the shiznit however that got shutdown.

    • +3

There are some great indexers but none will compare to the community that NZBMatrix had.

      I really miss it.

      • +1

NZB matrix was the bomb. Have never found anything as good

        • In terms of scene content there are some really great indexers out that are much better then the many bad indexers.

NZBMatrix did have some great community contributed content though and that community has disappeared it seems.

    • Who needs a community on an indexer :)

I use dog currently as I like their web interface for non automated searches/browsing but happy to hear others suggestions, though many may be unspoken of or invite only.

      • Dog is a decent indexer, it has some problems but its fine.

The community at NZBMatrix for UFC/Games and software was awesome, as well as reading all the fun movie comments.

  • I have a block with newsgroup direct for years and I still have 1.5Tb left. The main reason is the download speeds are pretty ordinary viz., newgroupdirect maxes out at 3MB/s and others at 11MB/s. Just try them out first :)

Ordinary* - 3MB/s was extraordinary a few years back but now don't want my ISO downloading at 1/4th the max achievable speeds.

  • I have tried Usenet and found it to be overrated.

Firstly unlike torrents there's no top 10 or top 100 torrents. You need to know exactly what to search for in order to download something.

Secondary some of the downloads are corrupted and require more effort to fix

Private trackers are much better IMO.

    Am I missing something?

    • Easier automation setup and not having to worry about uploading or ratios for a start.

    • +1

      Yes you are missing something.

I have top 100's, top downloaded in the last 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days in every single category, among other ways.

None of my downloads corrupt, if it did, Sonarr or Radarr would handle it automatically for me without clicking or doing anything.

Private trackers are not that great overall, but can be very good for specific rarer content that is community uploaded. In fact the only time I've used a private tracker was for old Australian content, and that was an Australia oriented private tracker.

In general private trackers are a pain because of mandatory ratios and the requirement for VPN's as you are distributing copyrighted material with torrents.

      • You using dog indexer for those lists or elsewhere?

        • I often use dog for that as I like the layout.

    • Why would you want the Top 100?
Do you not know what you want?

      • Top 100 is pointless I never liked it

But top in 24 hours, 7 days etc is perfect for finding material that is popular but you didn't know about yet, for example movies and TV shows.

        • Good if you're younger, I suppose. I've got a backlog of so many things that I'll never watch them all.

Even so, can't you just look at the top100 from torrents, and then find the same thing on usenet?

          • @outlander: Not really, the top 100 of torrents is often a poor idea of what people are watching at the moment unless its the really popular stuff.

Part of it is probably because of the usenet automation that you get really nice figures when you look at whats popular.

  • As mentioned, NGD price match any competitor. I got 18months for US$25 (< AU$37) a few months back
