I use PIA and get regular dropouts that last a few minutes. If I disconnect from PIA, my internet comes back. During the dropout my other devices still work with wifi (no VPN). So the problem is not my RSP.

    Anyone else get similar problems?

No, I get high transfer speeds on 100Mbps and usually no drop outs.

      Latency is terrible though.

      • Yeah I wouldn't use it for anything ping dependent like gaming, there are low latency VPNs specifically for gaming like exitlag or wtfast

PIA has never dropped out a single time for me and I've used it for 4 years daily. Always 80+Mbps too (my normal speed direct to ISP is 93).

Perhaps it's something interfering with the tunnel setup on your local machine.

      • i can't think of what the cause could be then. The setup is simple. You don't even need to configure it. So I don't know what could be going wrong. It happens intermittently which makes it even harder to diagnose.

        I get fast speeds too.

    • I get it too but it's infrequent enough that I'm not too fussed. Speeds are excellent though and I'll regularly chew through 10GB on some days downloading from my FTP server.

    • None of their servers were working for me recently. Until then they've been good for years.

    • This happens on my android phone every once in a while.

    • Generally I am impressed with the reliability and transfer speed of PIA. Sometimes I forget and leave it connected for days.
I do get an occasional drop out if I'm using PIA at the same time as something like a streaming service that sets a proxy.
If the streaming service dies I usually have to turn the proxy off manually through settings/network and internet/proxy and then restart the streaming service but PIA is generally unaffected throughout.

This streaming announcement is very interesting. Will have to test later!

  • Keep in mind that PIA originates from the USA, meaning that even though they claim no logging, if the FBI, CIA, ASIS, etc were to get the correct warrant, they could monitor you. This is worst case. Most people won't care, just something to be aware of.

SurfShark may be a better alternative for some people, would suggest reading up on it.

      You're right.

I've never gotten a VPN to do shady stuff that would make me fear the authorities. I don't trust that you can really be protected by anyone.

My main use is to download things from 1fichier without the 2 hour wait between downloads. I'd pay for premium but there's a 100% surcharge for using Paypal, and all the other payment options they take I just cannot trust. I download. I switch servers. Download the next. Switch servers. Rinse and repeat.

Btw, many places blacklist PIA IPs. They know that you're behind a VPN and you can't access their content.

PIA have already been tested by the FBI and the US court system:

      https://torrentfreak.com/vpn-providers-no-logging-claims-tes…

      • PIA is in a 5 eyes country. Their response to anyone's concerns about privacy in 5 eyes is, we don't keep logs. This is something you can only be expected to take at their word. There's no way to know how true this is.

        • The FBI have been unable to get logs relating to terrorism (see article).
Am I right in thinking that you’re suggesting that if you’re involved in something more serious, then another agency like the CIA or NSA might be able to get something where the FBI and US courts can’t?
Also, you think some Ozbargain users might be up to stuff that is escalated beyond casual international terrorism and the FBI?

          • @Plimsol:

The FBI have been unable to get logs relating to terrorism (see article).

I have a feeling that US government agencies don't tell you everything they've been able and unable to do. The successful surveilance that they are doing, you're not going to know about unless a whistleblower speaks.

Am I right in thinking that you’re suggesting that if you’re involved in something more serious, then another agency like the CIA or NSA might be able to get something where the FBI and US courts can’t?

I was not suggesting that, but pertaining to general surveilance powers it sounds very plausible to me. I think they could hack my computer very easily.

Also, you think some Ozbargain users might be up to stuff that is escalated beyond casual international terrorism and the FBI?

That's not relevant to my point. My point is, don't be overconfident that what you do can't be traced.

If the VPN doesn't log your activity, they are still keeping records of your payments. You kind of have to if you run a business. The FBI in this case knew where the computers were originally accessed from, and that the person they were suspecting had made payments for VPN services. They couldn't find incriminating evidence on him but that's already more than I'd like them to be able to dig.

Maybe PIA really is safe. If they've been tested. Can you guarantee every other VPN who claims no logs is also trustable? I go in with no trust of anyone's word.

        • If the FBI can't grab stuff related to terrorism K reckon most of us here should be fine xD

          • @N1NJ4W4RR10R: I'm fine no matter what. Because I don't do anything I'm afraid of people discovering.

But if I was to start being a terrorist, I certainly wouldn't put all my faith in a VPN to protect me.

  • Does anyone know if this works with DAZN Sports Japan?
