  • sees to be out of stock for many melbourne officeworks.

    • +3

You should be able to call up 1300 OFFICE (1300 633 423), price match it and get them to deliver it to you for free (if in Metro) :)

      • Such a great tip! Just did it over the phone and getting delivered tomorrow :)

      • Officeworks wanted to add a delivery fee because JBHIFI charges delivery $4.99

    • +2

i second that….1300 OFFICE is the best option. They'll deliver to you or to store for pickup. Also means you dont have to be fed lies on why you can't apply PBG by the power-hungry store manager.

  • It runs via Bluetooth so you can only search within a limited distance, right?

    • Within 90 metres (300 feet) from what I was reading.

      • +2

        90 meters in a clearing.

In a building/house that's going to drop. Bluetooth does NOT like walls.

    • +2

Yes correct. That's why it never really appealed to me.

    • +6

but it pings if other Tile users are within range…so technically if you live or go to a tile-dense environment, you'd have "endless" range.

      • +1

I have these. The updates take a while to come through when bouncing off other Tiles. Like maybe 5-6 hours in my experience. And it will give you a pretty broad area to search on a map, eg about 1sq km in the city.

        • +1

1sq km isn't particularly helpful. Handy for knowing what building or place you left i…but if genuinely lost on the street/park/road….good luck?

          • @Lv80: Exactly.

I use them on my father's keys and wallet as he has dementia and seems to "lose" them in his messy apartment about once a day.

Perfect for that purpose but next to useless in tracking him down when he goes AWOL.

            • @CrankyCarrot: ahha..I'm sure there might be better wifi/gps 'tiles' for this? or wristbands? More costly but that'd be an awful feeling loosing someone you love that has dementia

              • @Lv80: There are, but they're all impractical in that they aren't small with long battery life like the Tile.

He will either not take the devices with him (most larger GPS units/smartphone), or remove them by force - tracking bracelet.

The closest thing I could find requires charging every 40 hours and may be too large to place in his wallet, instead of the Tile.

              • @Lv80: Turns out there's a PDF from Dementia Australia on these! https://www.dementia.org.au/files/NATIONAL/documents/GPS-tra…

The watch ones are pretty expensive but potential worth it for you

                • +1

@MikeWhitneysHair: Yeah, that's the info I had already - just got it via email from somebody so couldn't post.

The problem with the watch is that he already has a watch he likes and very possibly would not take to/use a purpose built GPS one. I can't explain to him that he needs to do this or that — I can only work around what he naturally does anyway. Hence why ideally I need something the size of a Tile or smaller that could slip into his wallet or attach to his keys — ie the only things he consistently doesn't leave the house without. Again, with the GPS watch $499 + ongoing subscription costs are a bit too steep to take a gamble on knowing him and the high chance of it just being tossed aside and never used.

The shoe sole things might also seem appropriate, but he doesn't always wear the same shoes to go out.

                  Thanks for the effort though!

                  • @CrankyCarrot: Sounds like a challenge. Necklace with a Tile? Encase it in something? Sorry wish I knew of a better solution!

You're a good egg Theo! All the best to you and your old man. He's very lucky to have you.

                    • +1

                      @MikeWhitneysHair: Thanks.

He doesn't see it that way. Thinks he's fine and I'm just bothering him.

For now I have to make do with other methods of keeping track - ie Opal activity. Better than nothing but a far cry from the precision of GPS. He doesn't and wouldn't wear a necklace. If you could get devices like they have in the movies, ie tiny things that never seem to need recharging and have pinpoint accuracy, I'd probably install one in his dentures.

                      • @CrankyCarrot: Reminds me of that Black Mirror episode with the implant that gives parents access to their child's location, vision and hearing

They obviously paint a dark picture but just location would help with situations like yours.

                        • +1

@MikeWhitneysHair: I wish it was as entertaining as an episode of Black Mirror.

Maybe in the future they will just strap the oldies into some kind of VR and let them run wild online while nourishing them through tubes. Sort of like a geriatric Matrix.

  • Would Amazon price match this as well?

  • Anyone got these? Interested to hear if they have a better rep than previous iterations.

    • +1

Yeah got these from a previous amazon deal, haven't used these previously but they work great for finding lost keys.

      • +2

How often do you lose your keys that you need to rely on this device to find it?

        • +1

for me it's not so much I'm losing my keys but more so for a rainy day just in case I do lose them. Them fob key replacements for my mazda 3 is almost $500!!

        • +3

When you lose your keys, sunglasses and wallet on a regular basis, a tile is literally worth its weight in gold just for decreasing the stress of getting out of the house every morning!

          • +3

@aNoPHeLeS: So Tile Mate Pro weighs 15.5 grams and gold is $49.30 per gram.

So if they're worth $764 then this seems like an amazing deal!

    • +4

I had a few for my wallet, car, house keys and car keys. I found the best use was placing one in the car and one in my wallet that meant I could remember where I parked or know my wallet was safe in the office (as opposed to dropped on the street) if I got home and realised I didn’t have it.

I used the Slim version for wallet.

      • how location specific are they? Ie the leeway of the actual location?

    • +9

I bought a pack of four for $107.78 when they were on sale from Amazon (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/470855 also the non-pro version was $64.83 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/471144). So far have been fairly impressed. As has been noted, you need to be within 90m for the device to be detected but it can effectively use a mesh of anyone else out there with a device with the tile app loaded to help detect the tile. They are pretty popular, which means for example in my suburban area at the moment there are apparently 3,817 in my general location. Which means that with the Tile on my puppy's collar - although nowhere near as good as a gps device - I still have a better chance of locating her if she manages to run away. Other advantages include being the battery lasts a year, you're able to replace the batteries when they die, and the tile itself is pretty rugged.

Minor annoyance - apparently you used to be able to share Tiles with multiple users in the past, but that has been restricted. To get unlimited sharing and other features such as a history of locations, you need to subscribe to a plan - that is pretty expensive, at US$30 per annum (https://www.thetileapp.com/en-eu/get-premium), although it does include a replacement battery each year plus 3 year warranty on the Tiles so maybe is worth it is you have a lot of them.

Issues - well, I suspect it works better with iOS devices. Although initially fine, my Galaxy S9 currently seems to be unable to see the tiles even when standing next to them. "Solution" apparently is to uninstall, do a reboot, hold crystal over mobile, mutter magic words and eventually it might start working again. I suspect it's a security patch that google has rolled out that has in turn caused issues with the Tile app - so hopefully that will get fixed. Update - it seems to be working for me at the moment….. There you go. The app does use battery on your mobile to work, and if allowed to run in the background (which is required to enable the community location feature) then it will use more. Hasn't been an issue for any of our mobiles, but if you have an older mobile with a battery on the edge of death it might be a concern for you.

Overall, I think they are good and better than other trackers I've used. $30 each is probably the most I'd pay for them though.

      • +2

They are pretty popular, which means for example in my suburban area at the moment there are apparently 3,817 in my general location.

I'm pretty skeptical about their claims for how many users there are in any given area. Whenever I check there are usually around 3,500 (give or take a few hundred) around me. That's even in low population areas.

        • Down here in Hobart it currently reports 854 tile members around Hobart (that's up about 150-250 from about a year ago). It seems to be pretty accurate, and it seems like a tile gets picked up location wise within about 30 minutes. Many times much quicker.

      • +1

Got the Pro during the Amazon sale too, I have the current Mate version as well and can definitely say the Pro is better; faster and wider range. I put them inside my luggage for the last few trips and the Pro ones notified me faster that the luggages were arriving. Sometimes I could see where the luggage has been around the airport and that's pretty funny, it varies from country to country though, but the user base in Australia is pretty good. One downside of the Pro is that they're bigger so I can't really use them for small wallet.

  • Thanks always wanted to try them out at the right price.

  • +5

These are useless, without GPS or at least WiFi it's pointless. It only shows where it last pinged and was connected to Bluetooth which could be miles from where it is now. I doubt when the time comes to rely on this that it will be accurate enough to help. I have one on my car key and its offen reporting it as being 50km away.

    • +1

On their site it says that when other tile users "see" the device it will update the location.

    • +6

These are useless, without GPS or at least WiFi it's pointless.

In your experience possibly. I've been using them for a couple of years after I got a few of them as promotional freebies from an IT vendor. They work absolutely fine for my needs and also for many others (otherwise they wouldn't still be in business). If anyone invents a device that has WiFi or GPS that runs off a button cell for a year or more then that will be a massive game changer, but I don't see battery technology progressing that much within the next 5 years, likely even longer.

I recently bought a 4 pack to add to the 2 I was already using. Once a month or so they really justify the cost when they enable me to find keys, passes etc. that have been moved from where they were left.

      • -3

but I don't see battery technology progressing that much within the next 5 years, likely even longer.

Batteries will be gone in 5 years. Inductive charging.

        • +1

Charging of batteries that won't be there? Interesting trick. Even if it's a super-cap or similar, it'll still need charged and people won't want to be charging their keys, wallet etc. on top of all the other stuff they have to remember.

      • Agreed, I bought a pair for my dad and they are perfect for his needs. Losing his phone and keys in our house/garage/backyard everyday stresses him out and this has enabled him to find the objects in 2 mins instead of 2 hours.

      • +1

@banana365 I read that as "bought 4 to add to the 21 I was already using."

Had me scratching my head to think of 21 places to use a tile, let alone another 4!

    • If it had GPS and/or WiFi, how would you expect the battery to last a year?

  • +3

Yeah theyre probably ok finding things locally but at $100 or even $60 a pair that's all they're good for. A tile-dense environment was never going to happen unless these are $10-15 each.

It feels a little like a confused product because of that.

Still, maybe I'll buy two and put them on my kids. One is turning into a 'runner'. I'm scared of losing her.

    • One is turning into a 'runner'. I'm scared of losing her.

Write your surname and mobile number on the inside of her upper arm or on her stomach. That's what we used to do whenever we went with our kids to big events. Never had to use it thankfully, but I know it's a common method that's worked for others. Just make sure you don't write it where others can read it without at least asking the kid first.

      • It's even little 'events' like walking out the library and we were distracted for a moment. Next thing she's run off and literally gotten around the corner of the building before we knew.

Scary for a parent when your kid doesn't understand road safety properly (that's my main concern)

        • +3

Sounds similar to what we went through. Thankfully my kids are now a bit older and less prone to disappearing. There are trackers/locators now that would do the job, but they're not cheap. I'm in SES and we regularly search for missing people with dementia. It's enough of a risk with them that there's an entire (expensive) market for trackers aimed at them - https://www.dementia.org.au/files/resources/GPS-tracking-and…

Oh, and if anyone ever tells you "just keep a better eye on your kids" you have my permission to slap the stupid out of them.

        • +10

We had twins - one would run left, the other right. Had to choose which one we wanted to keep. Generally we'd run after the quicker one, figuring we'd be able to get the slower one later. Seemed to work - they're teenagers now, and I can't remember the last time I saw one of them run. Slouch, sure. Run - nah. :-)

  • +1

FWIW Both the Tile Mate and Mate Pro are IP55 rated (https://tileteam.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/200547688-Is-…). This means that they are "Dust Protected" and resistant to water spray and smaller jets (http://www.dsmt.com/resources/ip-rating-chart/). So not waterproof, but not too bad. The Pro case seems to be a little more rugged (with the steel vs plastic), but the main differences are the Pro is a little bigger, heavier, has twice the range (90m vs 45m) and has a louder buzzer.

  • These are great for our primary use case, which is finding keys and wallets around the house. We have lots of bags for lots of different purposes as well as lots of locations in the house. Which bag is the key in and which pocket of which bag do you look in to find it? We have 6 tile pros in total.

Granted, the other option is just to remember where you put your keys, but that doesn't work well for me.

    • +2

You just leave a bowl to put your keys in near the door you enter your house in. Works for me.

      • +1

        Which door?

Garage? Front door? Back door (out onto the fire trail for walking)?

        • -1

Fine. Hallway you always enter and leave from. I imagine you wouldn't be entering through the attic or window.

Or do what I do, attach a massive lanyard to your keys or have a massive keychain like they do at hotels to make it harder to misplace.

I found out recently people can buy a massive universal remote for their TV that is really hard to misplace or slip inbetween cushions on your sofa.

Or just attach your stuff to a brick and carry that around with you lol

  • I've been looking at these for my car keys, since it's like $500 to replace.

Can you set a mode where if the you drop your keys from your pockets on the street, it will notify your phone when it's out of range of your phone? Then can you set safe areas where it won't notify you, like at home or at work so you don't get false negatives when it's out of range. If these 2 requirements can be met, I'll be off to JB this afternoon.

Edit: Seem like you can do it with Smart Alerts, but that requires Premium subscription. I'll pass…not liking the subscription thing when I'm already paying like $30 a tile.

  • I've used it more often than I've expected to.
I keep one in my wallet, and use my phone to ring my wallet when I've misplaced it at home, or to check that I have put it in my backpack and not just left it at home.
Also I've used it the reverse way, to find my phone!

  • Had the earlier version of these (from Kickstarter from memory). Useless. No range. Basically had to be in the same room. And the battery died so quick. Still have about 5 sitting on my bookshelf never used.

    • The tile pro works much better. It basically works as advertised.

  • +3

    I'll wait for apple's version…

  • Can I stick one on a car key and both me and my partner see where it is from our own phones? PlasticSpaceman's comment suggests that takes an annual fee.

    • +1

No fee - go into the phone app, tap on the 3 dots above the item you want to share and press "Unlimited Sharing".
You can share via email, via your contacts, or create a link that can be sent to anyone

(The FAQ's list "Unlimited Sharing" as a premium feauture, but I don't have premium and can still access it on my iPhone)

    • +1

Sorry - you can share, but the number of people you can share a tag with is limited to one other person/account/email. So if it's just you and your partner, it's fine. :-)

      https://tileteam.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/205332837-Sha…

(If you have an older tile/account you may still be able to share that to unlimited people)

    • +2

We do this by just having a single Tile account. All our Tiles (4 of them) and the 3 phones (and one tablet) show up in the app. Each phone/tablet you can name, so it reports which one the Tile is near. And each phone works like a tile as well (you can locate your partners phone when she's misplaced it for example).

  • +7

I have a bucketload if these. Particularly like the one in my luggage that tells me that my baggage made the flight.

    • I'm honestly surprised you're able to pick it up at that distance through those materials.

  • Buy these and put it on a lanyard for your pets, children, …staff.
Stick on a bicycle, skateboard…and watch where the kids take them and how far…ha.
    Always know where they are.

    "Hey Kids,…new Christmas keyrings!"

    New necklace for the wife?
( like the mice putting on a bell, on the cat )

    • +1

Won't work well when the tiles are out of range of a phone.

It's easier to track people with their phones then these tiles. Find my Friend on iOS work very non-intrusively in the background and tracks your "friends" in real time.

      • It doesn't even track them when they're next to your phone, it just shows you where the phone was when the tag was nearby.

  • +3

I’ll wait for the Apple tile.

  • +3

Thank you doweyy for posting so many deals that call out to me, but can you stop posting so many good ones?! You'll be the death of me (financially).

  • +10

I work in the city, left my briefcase on the bus with the tile attached (to my car keys) and it wasn't handed in. A week later i got a ping from someone else finding it. I ran half way across the city to find the bag sitting on a bus waiting to go on route. Apparently the bus driver didn't get around to handing it in (the %##$)

It gave me directions to about 20meters in the city, not sure why someone said 1km

Saved me $1k… fantastic purchase for me

  • +1

Feels like Tile trying their best to get penetration before Apple release their iPhone native competitor

      Probably apples business model

      iTile base model $299
      iTile with GPS $399
iTile with GPS and 4G $599

Apple will charge $1 every time you ping your iTile

        FTFY

      • Is this a serious comment, I can't tell.

I don't think Apple would be charging prices like that, but I'm not sure

  • can this hooked up to google assistant?

  • Thanks! Sent mine back to amazon (bought them @98.99) 3 days ago.

  • +1

I found the best way to use these, is to install a bluetooth scanner that gives you signal strength and then just pin point the area based on signal strength. In the office my friend couldn't find his tile with the app whatever so I just used that method.. worked okay but took sometime to scan the room

  • Can it be used as a pet tracker for adult cats ?

    • +1

Yes, but just keep in mind it doesn't track the position of the tags, it simply tracks when it was in range of your phone.

If you lost your cat, you could use the "community find" feature to see for crowdsourced reports of the tag (assuming other people in your neighbourhood have the app running).

So if your cat went missing, you could check your tag to see WHEN the cat went missing, and if they were actually missing, or just hiding somewhere around the house.

  • How do you go about setting these up so you can always alert the same phone from the same tile? We just got 2 tiles and when on the same account it always called the same phone no matter which tile I click. I eventually transfered one tile to a second account and now each can find a seperate phone. As soon as I shared it again it always calls one phone. Hope that makes sense. Basically we want to one tile for each phone but we want to see them all in each other's accounts. Is that possible?

  • -3

No point buying them unless they can be accurate with Gps in it

    • Hard to power a gps for 12months off a coin battery.
Would be inconvenient to have to charge it everyday, and you would still need a way to transmit the location.
