Hey All, first post on here.

Saw this deal on JBHIFI website and thought I'd share it.

If you're after a high end Chromebook from Australian retailer this is a great option.

Cheapest I've ever seen it. Normally it's $999!

Not sure how long it goes for as it's one of those 'red hot deals'.

    64GB eMMC storage :(

Most Chromebooks come with 100 GB GDrive storage for 1 year ($28 per year after that). You can assign your downloads folder to GDrive. I know it's not an exact replacement at all. But 64 GB is good enough on a Chromebook imho.

    • +1

      Why the sad face?
64GB is tonnes for ChromeOS, and while a proper SSD would be nice, it is still much better than a hard drive.

      • +2

I know 64gb is tonnes but how much more is the cost to put say 256gb? I bet just $40 more

        • +1

The idea is to use cloud storage, so local eMMC is mostly just cache.
It has a micro-SD slot, so you can add your own.

Personally, I'd go for an ex-lease Surface or Lenovo instead. But ChromeOS is great for giving to family members who expect you to be their tech-support.
It is almost zero maintenance, unlike Windows or even Linux.

@bargaino: lol. Technically ChromeOS IS Linux.. and it does have the same maintenance cycles as does any other OS if you value security.

            • @bchliu: I agree with Manic, chrome os is just chrome browser. No need to install firewall, antivirus, office, etc.

No confusing choices of browsers, mail clients.

No confusing choices of desktop, downloads or documents or favourites folder or drives.

Seems simple n perfect for elderly who just want to browse and check email.

        • But isn't emmc much smaller footprint?

    • FYI, i3,64gb storage,no thunderbolt port, no dvd rewriter, no card reader, no expansion slot.

      • +12

        No floppy, no rs-232.

        • No gpu.

whens the last time you had a 600 dollar laptop last 6 years?

          • +3

@ubcool: My 2006 laptop running intel core duo t2500 is still running win10 home now….

          • +2

            @ubcool: Lenovo e440 i3 8gig 128ssd dvdrw 14' <$650 purchased April 2015 still going strong after 4 years

          • @ubcool: I have a $400 Acer Aspire from 2013 that's still perfectly serviceable. All I did was drop in more RAM and an SSD; a whole new lease on life for that bad boy.

      • FYI,

        Specs
        Micro SD Card Reader

        • No 5 in 1 Card Reader

          • +2

@MuddyClear: Pfft, how many laptops today come with anything other than SD?

All other memory card types died ages ago, besides people using compactflash as substitutes for IDE drives in their "retro" PCs.

Hey All, first post on here.

    Hey, we know

  • My HP all in one is broken down within 4 weeks from purchasing and now waiting for warranty claim for two weeks. It really sucks. I’m staying away from this brand.

    • +1

      Is that the refurb one.

@OP Please add AUE of June 2024 to description.

    https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/6220366?hl=en

    • Is that when the device stops receiving updates from Google?

      • +3

Quoting Some Chromebooks mistakenly declared themselves end-of-life last week

When your Chromebook or Chromebox approaches its built-in expiration date, it will warn you that it's time to go buy a new device entirely. Not long after that, it will refuse to apply any further security or feature updates. In addition to leaving users vulnerable to unpatched security exploits, this means that constantly evolving services such as Gmail will eventually stop working entirely.

At that point in time your option is probably to install a Linux distribution.

      • +1

Yes. You can put gallium OS or Project Croissant to increase life of your Chromebook beyond AUE date though.

        • Will update the post so people are aware of this, thanks for the info.

          • +1

@CC123: This is a bummer for me. After this date it is useless. That means resale value also diminish rapidly. If it has large storage at least, then I can install windows.

If you are considering a ChromeBook, it is worth reading Guidemaster: How to buy a Chromebook, plus our best picks.

  • Am I just not up with the times or does $1000 normally for a Chromebook seem expensive?

    • That's the price of a FHD touch screen. Or more accurately, that's the marked-up price and the current deal is the real cost.

      • I got a 2 in 1 with a 256GB SSD in it and basically same specs for that much though.
Disclaimer: I did use discounted GCs, just like one could here to lower the price further.

  • With that price imo you can buy a regular laptop with similar or better specs and more flexibility

    • Such as the Dell Vostro I nearly just bought - 8th gen Core i5, 15.4 FHD, 256mb NVMe SSD, 8GB RAM, DVD, nude ladies.

Could always stick Chrome OS on.

      • 8th gen Core i5, 15.4 FHD, 256mb NVMe SSD, 8GB RAM, DVD, nude ladies.

Specs look ok… Till nude ladies

        Lolwut?!?!

        • What else you use your computer for???

        • No, you mean specs look "meh" till nude ladies.
