[eBay Plus] CyberPower 1200VA Value1200ELCD UPS $152.15 Delivered @ Computer Alliance eBay

260
PEACHY15

I've been looking at getting an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and CyberPower seem to have decent reviews for home office setups with good app support (and Synology NAS support too for those interested). At $152.15 delivered (less Shopback OR discounted eBay gift cards from Australia Post), this seemed to be the best price I could find on the 1200VA/720W model which is rated as having a half load runtime of 8 minutes. Refer to specs: https://www.cyberpower.com/au/en/product/sku/value1200elcd

Computer Alliance also has other CyberPower UPS models (all using same coupon except for the cheapest one which is below the $120 minimum spend for PEACHY15) but this seemed to be the best fit for my needs.

  • Friends, how do cyberpower compare to powershield/ other ups brands?

    • I have one running for the past 5 years the model below this and still going strong

      • have you tried running on it for the amount of time you expect it to run for, might report healthy but when you do a battery test could die… the batteries dont really last that long (unless of course you've recently already replaced them)

I have 4 CP1500 LCD units I use in my home servers. Look for the Pure Sine wave units, for important hardware.

  • might need to look for one to keep nbn and pc running over the summer power blackouts ……this might be a bit small to keep pc and router going for an hour or two.

    • Will run the router for about 2 hours

You're not going to get anything that's going to keep an entire desktop PC + monitor in use for very long, especially if you plan on actually doing anything with it. You might be able to get an old industrial UPS from a server cabinet that might keep it going, but it won't be for an hour or two. With something like this, you'd be lucky to get ~10 mins.

UPS aren't designed to keep things running through a blackout, just to allow servers to dump whatever write operations they're doing to disk and shut everything down safely. For stuff like internet/routers…etc. yeah sure, but check if it's on 5V or 12V DC, if it is, just hack a $30 phone battery bank. Why convert from DC to AC to DC?

If you want to keep power during a blackout, get one of the external backup batteries you can put on the side of your house.

      • 1200VA should be about to run a PC and Monitor for 40+ minutes.

But yes, UPS aren't meant to be running devices. Provide short burst and 'bad power', plus the ability to safely shut down devices in a blackout.

      • Actually, you can get UPS units that will run for a reasonable amount of time. The UPS that I have in my office will power most of my office for around 5 or so hours when the batteries are new.

It's an old APC SmartUPS 1000XL (The XL series are for extended run time and can have to 10 external battery packs connected to them) I've got 2 external battery packs on mine giving me a total of 10x 12V 18Ah batteries i.e. over 2 kWh.

  • I get 15 mins for my server cabinet out of the model below this

  • I bought for $134 yesterday
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/APC-Power-Saving-Back-UPS-6-Outl…

Do I need to cancel the order and buy this?

    • +1

Keep your APC, which has AVR, (Automatic Voltage Regulator).

      • +1

        This has AVR too.

        • Oop, I didn't realise that.

      • Thanks I will keep it. I just need to power up router and arlo pro 2 base station. I think APC better brand ?

        • Not much difference cyberpower popular as well

  • How long do the batteries on these things usually last and what's the replacement cost?

  • +1

Is this the same unit but slightly cheaper? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CyberPower-Value-SOHO-UPS-1200VA…

    Thanks

      (MPN — Manufacturer part number)

Based on the product listings, these are most likely the same product.

      • Thanks, I suspected the same but wanted to confirm. Since CA is out of stock, this is still available at shallothead.

I got my UPS yesterday and man it's heavy! But anyway, setting it up and I ran into the stupidest of issues which I want to share with the broader OzBargain community and anyone else having issues installing the CyberPower VALUE1200ELCD UPS.

Upon installing the latest PowerPanel Personal software (2.17), I kept seeing this error "powerpanel personal service is not ready" on Windows 10 1903. Google found an old 2005 manual for the previous version of the software which used this error message to indicate the monitoring service had been stopped. I checked all the services are running (they were) and the UPS was detected in device manager (it was). Tried uninstalling and got a random error about missing files with the Program Files (x86) folders left somewhat intact (but ironically I still got the 'uninstallation was a success' message). Tried reinstalling. Same issue. Note that the monitoring service was active but the PowerPanel Personal software application was not and I had to launch it manually.

The issue was that during the installation of PowerPanel, at the end, it asks you to restart your PC to complete the installation. When I did this I noticed Windows gave the usual list of applications preventing the restart which will be forced to quit, yada yada… but I noticed there was something there I didn't recognise. So when I went to reinstall it again, I did NOT click yes, and instead elected to restart later. Lo and behold, everything works after that. So it seems that anyone clicking yes to restart immediately would be faced with an incomplete installation.
