  • Plays mkv files, which I know is an important feature for many people.

  • Note Coaxial digital audio, but does not appear to have Optical out.

Pretty amazing that you can get something of these specs at $40-50 price point.

Is this as good as the boxes given to pensioners?

    Little known fact:

This unit brand was named after the sound it commonly makes ("tong!") just as a soft plume of smoke exits the rear of the machine. Sometimes accompanied by an eerie glow from within the machine (which remains visible even when the unit is unplugged) and staying warm to touch until the internal circuitry has completely burned out. This symptom usually occurs within the first 3 times the unit is switched on, or in the thirteenth month, if this unit is shipped with a one year warranty.

Just kidding - I have one similar to this, and although buggy, it does its advertised job.

'Package contents…2x AAA batteries (not included)'. Guess that's the new definition of 'contents' :-)

    • Well spotted, lol!

      • Hmm, it's probs to keep the cost price down as much as possible. Or so they could keep on selling these boxes for years to come (past the batterys' expiry). I bought a cheap AWA dvd player (19 bucks) and that didnt come with any batteries together. =)

    • hilarious

  • I bought the Highlander model with similar specs for $40 [+ 10 shipping - 10 coupon] from this mob last August. One would hope these things would be cheaper by now.

  • What's the max external hdd you can use with these? Cheap units usually say 400gb or 1tb. I have a 2tb that I want to plug into a cheap pvr.

  • I suggest buy your Set Top boxes from Dick Smith or any big store with a generous return policy as these units are extremely un-reliable. At least at Dick Smith if your unit dies within the warranty period, they give you a new replacement unit without any fuss. With mail order online stores, there is no store front, you need to post them your unit which will cost you more than $10 and you are not sure they will honor the warranty. I bought my STB from Dick Smith and they gave me a free 3 yrs. extended warranty.
