All are pretty woeful when you read the specs … the AMD Ryzens stood out until you get to the HD not FHD screens.

    This made me laugh..

    New Dell G5 15 5590 Gaming Laptop 9th Gen Intel i5 9300H 8GB RAM 128GB SSD $1359 <—- Graphics Processing Type: Dedicated Graphics

Even with 20% they still are not standouts compared to some of the TA deals for the lenovos.

Amazons current 'deal' of the day for $890 aud is probably better than the savings to be had here and even that is mediocre:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/GL63-8RCS-060-Gaming-i5-8300H-GTX1…

    • Hey that msi looks good, ill check he full spec

      • Graphics card is only a GTX1050. This is what I would call a 'light gaming' laptop.

        • Yeah I don't mind okay gfx but hopefully it has Thunderbolt, and thin bezel. That MSI, not ips and no thunderbolt…. Hmmmm…

            @CyberMurning: Display: 15.6" Full HD eDP IPS-Level 45% NTSC

            • +1

              @MuddyClear: from google:
“IPS-level” is generally not an official term but some manufacturers like to use it to stand out from the crowd. For instance, MSI notebooks are very often equipped with a so-called “IPS-level” display. But what exactly is “IPS-level”?
You should note that “IPS-level” usually means a TN display and although MSI’s TN panels are a lot better than what you get from the average one, it is still a TN panel. Sometimes it happens that the specs sheet on a retailer’s or manufacturer’s website lists the display of a notebook as IPS when in fact it is “IPS-level”. Maybe some do it by mistake other on purpose, however, you should always do your research before committing to your purchase.

im not expert, never have ips laptop…

              • +1

@CyberMurning: Perhaps you should google the laptop as you will find it has ips display and not TN panel - thanks anyway for your “ips level” explanation.

                • @MuddyClear: ok thanks. apologies as i said i never own msi or ips laptop. and that what i found from google. ips level is not 100% ips (not sure what it means, could be almost the same but not the same with ips?)

    • The G7 with RTX2060 looks decent. Only 1 in stock though

      • None left now.

    • +1

If you read a bit deeper, the G5 15 has a 1650… still not very impressive

    • Thanks for the warning about the 720p screens. I liked the Ryzens until that part.

      • -1

        Is 1366x HD?

        • 720P is HD
          1080P is FHD

          Why the neg vote?

          • @cwongtech: Misclicked. What about 1366x res

            • +1

              @capslock janitor: HD = 1280 x 720 (which is 720p).

1366 x 768 is higher than that (and backwards compatible with 1280 x 720) so yes, it's HD.

This one is great for someone who doesn't play new/AAA games, edit videos, etc. Dell New Inspiron 15 3585 Laptop AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 8GB RAM 256GB SSD WIN10$599

But display is garbage HD only

The entry level laptop images have Optical drive and then :

.3. Optical Disk Drive (not included)

I mean what is the point of the images then, not that I care about optical drive.

Dell Refurbished provides at least better value.

  • whats the equivalent one to mac pro?

    • +1

Most people would consider the equivalent to be the XPS 13/15 but it's a bit of an apples to oranges comparison when you just say 'equivalent'

      • Dell XPS 13 9380 Laptop 8th Gen i7-8565U 8GB RAM 256GB NMVe SSD FHD Silver $1759

Crap compared to deal from June this year https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/465538
Same CPU more RAM more storage.

        Edit: What's difference between 7xxx and 9xxx?
        I still reckon it wouldn't warrant a $500 increase.

    • +1

This one is probably closest to the MacBook Pro 15 spec:
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-XPS-15-9570-Laptop-8th-Gen-…

It even has a heavily thermally-limited i9 processor, just like the MBP :-)

But in the eBay store, you can only pick and choose the pre-defined models rather than tweaking the specs to suit your particular needs.

      • Wow, those are amazing specs for a laptop. 1TB SSD and 32GB ram and 4GB graphics. Really expensive though.

      • And a price to match.

  • if i want to get TRS from this laptop but the person going is not me:

the ebay page says: "please check that the name and address details you enter are correct. the name and address you provide will appear on your invoice and cannot be changed…"

what is "name and address you provide" ??? the shipping/recipient name and address ??

    • +2

TRS will not let you do it.
My invoices had my name to it, but only wife was going, TRS rejected it.

      • yes thats why i ask if dell ebay invoice is generated based on recipient name and address.
        below post said so

      • +2

Was it provided in PDF format?
        Asking for a friend

        • oh, yeah i remember you said use pdf editor :D
name and address are fine, but dont change other stuffs

    • +1

From my own experience with other sellers, the invoice will contain the shipping/ recipient name.

Honestly I’ve been buying refurbished laptops over brand new example bought a surface pro 3 refurb for my work from this eBay store saves me so much money and higher specs:

    • +2

seller name, fish dont sleep :D
if this is part of 20% off i will get one

      • lol i thought the store name was pretty funky too :P , didn't have any issues great seller.

    • +1

Risk with that approach: the battery might be terminal, and when these fail it's often the screen or the connections associated with the screen. Once that happens, you're dead in the water. Processor, RAM etc just keep kicking on.

  • Can anyone suggest if Dell New Inspiron 15 3585 Laptop AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 8GB RAM 256GB SSD WIN10$599(ebay.com.au) is worth buying at this price? I am after a touch screen laptop but unable to get in this range.

    • +3

Can I suggest waiting for a greysonline ebay discount code. The lenovo (refurbs) that pop up there are usually reasonable value and a 20% code that comes up every other week may be your best bet for a touch screen.

I can vouch for the hit and miss quality but have never really had any issues with a return - they are have been quick to refund for me in the past.

The ryzen is ok value but deals like this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/480104 are better with the extra screen resolution and CPU. Tightarse will be around with another code soon enough Im sure - otherwise maybe PM him.

      • That’s $139 more

      • So Lenovo or Dell?

        I've used:
Acer Aspire - hate the missing Caps indicator, older models were better equipped.
Asus Vivobook - also no CapsLock indicator light. Crappy support for the model
Toshiba Satellite - OK but rebranded/sold off now?
        HP Pavillion - overheating.

    • +2

This brand new laptop is an absolute bargain at 599 even with the low resolution screen. Unless you have used higher res displays before it's unlikely you will notice.

      • -1

I respectfully disagree, I upgraded laptops almost entirely because of the screen real estate limitations of HD over Full HD. There's been some Lenovo i3 8th Gen, 8GB, 256gig, FHD options in the $600 range that probably present better value.

        • same here. i always own HD laptop this time i will not upgrading if it is not FHD.

  • Nothing in between $599 and $1359. Low end model then jumps to very high end models.

    • Jumps more in price than real usability though, unless your use is gaming lol.

    • +1

If you think 1359 is a very high end model, wait till you see the 3k+ models.

      • +1

Seen some of them, nice and shiny :-)

Most people need to put their thousands if they have any spare to their cars or mortgage instead, in saying that there are plenty of people with big money to spend on toys.

  • Has anyone got experience with customised Dell ebay listings? Considering Win10 Pro instead on Win10 Home with one XPS 13.

    • +1

some people say you can contact them and ask them to make a custom listing for you.

  • I'd just go to the Dell Factory Outlet if I wanted a laptop. We support mostly Dells and I'd say the Latitude range is pretty solid. Little more expensive than the inspirations but they last longer IMO.
Had a client get a crack in the screen of his XPS laptop and the cost to repair, while out of warranty was more than half the cost of a new laptop.

Can anyone recommend a laptop for my dad? We were browsing for some of the laptops in Officeworks, but he does want a Dell but there wern't any there (Can these only be purchased online?)

    Requirements
    - Budget: under $600
    - Weight, something not too heavy. Under about 1.4kg
    - HD Storage: Happy with something under 250gb
    - Ram: 4gb
    - Screen size: 11-13inch is okay
    - Port: Preferably 2 usb ports at least. Not concerned with HDMI. Optical drive would be nice (as he's old school) but not necessary
    - Purpose: He likes to watch movies and use it for microsoft word (he doesn't watch HD movies, very pixelated 480p graphics).

He was using a 10 year old laptop before this.
Any help from any expert ozbargain hunters would be very much appreciated guys!!

    • +2

First of all try to convince your dad to widen his search and look at other good quality laptop brands such as Lenovo/Acer/HP that offer great value for money in this price range. Reliability is all similar in this range within a few % for the breakdown statistics from insurance companies.

Secondly if going for the 11"-13" screen form factor it is almost impossible to get a DVD-ROM drive built in, usually 14"-15" and up.

CPU is the other important part to look for, preferably an i3 or a decent quad core pentium that runs efficient and cool, but will have enough power to run his programs for more than 5 years or more. For that budget I would not settle for a spinning slow HHD but look for at least a 120GB SSD as this speeds up system and hence can have lower spec CPU for best bang for your buck. Also try to get 8GB ram for same reason.

Battery endurance for many people is important, so a balance between CPU/battery and of course budget. Sounds like he is using mainly at home on power, so maybe not as important.

  • Can someone recommend a decent 15.6'/17' laptop with a glossy bright screen (300 nits or more). I need it mainly for multimedia and browsing. Absolutely no gaming. Quick responses appreciated!!

  • do these take very long to deliver from Malaysia?
