I'd be happy to see the animals and let them keep the free kids :+)

One of the more interesting aspects of this change is that the family membership prices now include kids (4yo - 15yo) for free. A family (2 adults, 2 kids, joining fee) signing up for annual zoo membership therefore pays:

    • $270 = Adelaide
    • $260 = Taronga
    • $206 = Perth
    • $178 = Melbourne

Given they all offer reciprocal membership, a person from Sydney would save considerably if they became a member of Melbourne Zoo and used the reciprocal rights for their local zoo. Note, of course, that the money is going to the upkeep of animals (at least, I hope it's not all going to the cafeteria and ice-cream vendors!) so if you live in Sydney, this may not be an area you'd want to cut costs on - I did the calculations mainly to satisfy my own curiosity.

    • I wonder if i apply with my adelaide address if they would accept it or not. Maybe you would need a victorian address and ive herd they somtimes ask for id to prove its your membership so you don't pass it around. But a good idea i think other states should follow

      • As a poor student, my first zoo membership was with Adelaide zoo even though I lived in Melbourne. No problems at the time. They may have thought it odd in the office but it worked. Of course, the big downside is that the newsletter only tells you what's happening at an interstate zoo not your local zoo so now I am a Melbourne zoo member since I have more cash these days and opt to support my local zoo.

  • But something doesn't add up. It says in the title it's for holidays only. So does your membership only allow you to go during holidays now? Seems a bit odd.

    • I also wonder if kids need to pay on weekday (non holiday period)???

    • +1

it's unlimited entry for the whole year for member. for normal admission, it's only during the holiday

    • -2

membership is for any time entry…

free admission prices as per above are for non-members….

membership prices will be reduced because of this change in pricing, but members can still be able to go anytime…

This should be in the forums, it's just an announcement of their new prices available from July…

It is not a bargain, it's their normal price…

If you want a bargain, get some VIVA paper towels, they have a 2 for 1 coupon for some of Australia's Zoos, including Healsville in Melbourne…

While this is technically correct, I don't think this deserves a neg.

Use neg votes on deals that are genuinely bad or misrepresented. we don't want to discourage people from sharing useful information.

        I don't think this deserves a neg.

the -ves get removed when it gets moved to the forums, where this belongs…

gee, 5 people so far don't like VIVA paper towels… :O

Kids can now visit the zoo for FREE
    Friday, 24 June 2011

The Victorian Coalition Government is giving kids free entry to three of Victoria's outstanding zoos, Healesville Sanctuary, Werribee Zoo and Melbourne Zoo, as part of a $10.7 million promise to subsidise zoo entry fees for an estimated 266,000 kids.

Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith said the free entry for kids subsidy will make it even more affordable for Victorian families to visit Victoria's zoos. The subsidy will reduce the cost of a full priced child's ticket from $12.6 to $0. A family ticket will be reduced from $58 to $50.80.

    Cut / snip

The initiative will grant children under 16 years of age free entry to three of Victoria's great zoos, Healesville Sanctuary, Werribee Zoo and Melbourne Zoo, on weekends, Victorian public holidays and Victorian school holidays from 1 July 2011. Children under 15 years of age must always be accompanied by an adult (over 17) for safety considerations.

  • I agree that the children's entry reduction is a bargain, but my Family FOTZ membership cost me $168 inc the joining fee last year. The 'discounted' family FOTZ membership inc joining fee this year will cost $178- how is that a bargain?

    • I agree that the children's entry reduction is a bargain,

It's not a bargain, they are just changing their normal entry prices…

it's not limited time, no coupons, you don't have to sing a jingle… it's just the normal entry price…

  • I didn't realise there were so many people that actually went to the zoo frequently enough to find the need for membership. How often are members going?

    • Once or twice per year to each of Healesville, Werribee, and Melbourne zoo. Pays for itself going just once to each zoo.

    • You'll never know until you become a parent

    • How often are members going?

have you seen the normal entry prices ??? around 3 visits and you break even…

we usually got to melbourne zoo about 3-4 times
      werribee zoo around 2-3 times
healsville once in the last 3 years…

membership also gets you 10% off purchases…

    • I used to live next door to the zoo so about 3 visits/wk a few years back. I now go about 3 visits/month because I've moved. FOTZ lose their money on me because I visit so often and buy nothing. :-)

The difference between me and a casual zoo visitor though is that I just go and watch one animal for much of my visit. Which animal I visit changes all the time but whereas casual visitors try and see every animal and have to take potluck on what each animal is doing when they arrive, I watch for a period of time and see different behaviours. It's sometimes amusing to watch families charging around the zoo, one kid crying, the other passed out from exhaustion in the stroller, as mum and dad try to see every animal and get their money's worth. As previously noted, a visit is not cheap…
