Free Coffee with Any Reusable Cup 6/8-2/9 at 7-Eleven

8290

Just got my morning coffee from 7/11 with by keepcup and was told by the attendant that next month all coffees with a reusable cup will be free. So a whole month of free coffees if you use a reusable cup.

He didn't mention anything about it being only linked to their branded rCups, and I wasn't using one today, so doesn't look like that's the case. But maybe someone associated with the store can confirm.

Offer available only to customers filling their own reusable coffee cup made of multi-use plastic or glass and suitable for hot liquids. Make sure your reusable coffee cup is clean. Not in conjunction with any other offer. Valid to 02/09/19.

??? also = Just so happen to be selling their own keep cups to a market which never seems to use keep cups, relying on people overestimating how often people will take advantage of this deal to justify purchasing a keep cup in store for $15 instead of paying $1 for the coffee they came in for

        • True. But some peeps are going twice a day with own cup :P

  • Can confirm that it is valid at the Collins St 7-11 at the paris end.

Also took the opportunity to try their new Onigiris (people who have gone to Japan will recognise this as the triangular rice balls with nice filling). It's not bad actually.

    • +2

Their promotion to get you in store was successful!

    • Like the Seicomart ones?

      Is the price reasonable?

  • Yeah no problems at Castle Hill although there's no signage, but supposed to be $1 size apparently? 🤔

The Jamaica Blue keepcup fits a medium sized coffee quite well.

  • +2

PSA - if you have a 375ml KeepCup…this will not fit a Large 7 Eleven coffee inside. Latte overflowed everywhere (at least there wasn't a queue behind me)

    • Reminds me of that person who suggested a plastic bucket. Anyone bold enough to try something similar?

      • I was told by the 7-11 clerk this was OK

      • Seems wasteful

    • Same, but I usually choose $2 coffee and stop the machine when my cup getting full.

      • how do you stop the machine? I find half the milk is sufficient.

        • apparently you just pull your cup out from under the machine and it senses it. don't know; never tried.

          • +4

@tdw: there is no sensor to stop the flow of coffee. it just keeps flowing. source - tried it.

I had very bad experience today regarding this promotion.

I went into Rockdale 711 store this morning holding my new reusable cup I got for free from national tree day event. I saw one coffee machine was under repair and thought I was unlucky. The staff behind the counter showed me there was another machine by pointing his hand. I got my free coffee and was walking out with 'thanks mate'. Then I was stopped, and asked to pay for my coffee. I showed him the reusable cup, he was confused saying that I can only get free coffee if I have a voucher or bar code. I was a bit confused as well but I happen to have a bar code in my 711 app for free coffee so I surrendered that.

I walked out and had another look at the ad poster. Then I walked back telling the staff that there was no requirement of bar code or voucher for free coffee, and asked politely what would happen if I didn't have 711 app and came for free coffee because I saw the post. He told me I would not be allowed to leave if I didn't pay or have a voucher, and I can see from his face that he was looking at me like looking at some trash. I told him it was not right, he yelled at me and asked me to call 711 head office. So I did, and asked the call center lady to explain to him about the promotion and also he doesn't really have the right to stop me from leaving the store. He yelled at me 'get out of the store', I can't remember his exact word, it was not as bad as fk off but something similar. Another staff or manager came asking what was happening without knowing the promotion as well apparently but he followed me out to see the poster. Then this guy asked me if I got permission from the first guy first before I got my coffee. I was ????. Then he politely accused me for not getting permission first. I didn't bother to argue with him about such bs.

Call center lady heard the whole conversation, and apologized again and again, but it was not her fault. After 2 hours I received another call from their office saying that the district manager was driving to the store to make sure that everyone understands the promotion and 'take care of my complaint'.

I worked in a 7/11 store myself many years ago, underpaid and tired, and I do remember that I was rude to some really bad customers. But I did appreciate those who would smile and say thanks. Really upset with the experience so I spend a good 20 minutes of my morning calling 711. And I think I will go to get another cup of coffee when I drive home this afternoon although I don't usually drink coffee after work.

    • +9

      I thought this would happen.

Any time free promotions happen, THIS WILL HAPPEN EVERY SINGLE TIME.

      I hate it.

      • +1

Yep, I think there will always be the risk of store staff not yet knowing the promotions. But that's no excuse to be rude / mean to customers.

(I realise many customers are probably rude to them, from time to time, so best to be nice, friendly, and like wolfazrael123 said, offer a smile :-)

OzBargainers (and other app users) probably find out about the promos first.

After a few days, all the store attendants should know about it… In the meanwhile, I find it best to just say to the attendant (with that friendly smile again) "I'm going to use the promo for the free coffee" before I fill up, especially since there isn't a barcode for this one…

        • +1

Exactly. That's what I am going to do. Nicely walk over and say that. Best way. No screaming matches, everyone happy.

      • +1

sure does. doesn't matter what company it is, someone always misses the memo and thinks the customer is a criminal.

a few years ago, red rooster were giving away two chicken strips and reg chips for free. one manager first told me their store wasn't participating, then claimed i "faked" the voucher, then changed tack to "you have to buy something else first" until finally i had enough and called red rooster customer support. they got the district manager to drive out there that same day which was quite amazing. i think i only waited about half an hour there until he showed up, educated the muppets about the promo, then put my order through himself. he even asked if i wanted a free drink and was surprised when i declined. i was only trying to claim what they were offering — nothing more or less.

        • +1

Head office always gets it right, I think the owners of the franchise are disgruntled over the royalty fees they have to pay and have pressure to perform. It's good that you did that, hold them accountable.

          • +1

@RocketSwitch: franchisees do get legitimately screwed over and that's not on. but for them to take that out on customers is simply the wrong way to go about it.

    • Yeah it does raise issues on how do you get your free coffee - do you have to alert the attendant so they don't think you're stealing? I mean if they are serving petrol, etc and in the corner of their eye see you walk in to coffee machine and walk out, they might not instantly know you're using a keep cup.

They should have implemented it better where you have to notify the attendant before using keep cup or something like that?

No excuse for that revolting behaviour at the Rockdale 7/11 though.

      • I think you need to just grab your coffee as normal, then go to the register with the coffee in the reusable cup so they can put it through the register (which they don't charge you for). This is what I did today.

I guess they need people to follow the normal process so each store can claim back the value of the free coffees they've dispensed.

        • But how many people wouldn't think you have to go via register since it's free??

    • Is this the Rockdale op station or the one Forrest road? I've had both negative experiences with owner/attadant there. This was for a fuel lock coupon.
Said it was too low and grabed my phone and clicked on my account details to check the app was legit.

      • Call up 7/11 customer service 1800 247 711 and speak to them. They shouldn't be touching your phone like that.

    • Call up 7/11 customer service 1800 247 711 and speak to them. They will make sure the store knows the details of the promotion.

  • Gave it a go and was charged $2. They said the only free coffee was the small one :-(

    • ??

      • They must have seen the $2 button being pressed… Does it actually say in the fine-print that you have to use the $1 coffee?

(the $2 coffee fitted in my KeepCup today…)

        • +2

The offer on the app doesn't mention a size.

I would imagine the free coffee you can get is the size relevant to the size of your keepcup - not just the $1 small size.

    • Complain to head office which store. The ad doesn't specify what size.

    • I had a problem with the misunderstanding of the promotion, I told the attendant I didn't want the coffee can I just tip it out. He said yes so I tipped it out and left. Then promptly called up 7/11 customer service 1800 247 711 and spoke to them.

  • +2

    Got my free one today.

Was told that any reusable cup was OK no matter the size. the only restrictions were no thermos and no Vases. I suggested to the lady that I would duck to Bunnings and get a bucket and she said go for it.

    • +2

The bucket would be a cool youtube stunt :)

      • I used a thermos today… a small one

        • +1

I used my small keep cup and poured 3x $1 coffee into my thermos.

  • +3

If they have a well maintained cafina alpha machine (silver one), the coffee is pretty decent. Better than what half the coffee places churn out who don't have a properly trained barista. There is a black machine with a colour touch screen, cant remember the brand, and the coffee from that tastes horrible. But still…free coffee and is free coffee lol

    • There's a store a bit further away from my work that has a touch screen machine, I've never tried it but always wanted to because I assumed being newer and flashier the coffee would be better….it sounds like I should stick with the closer store with the silver machine!

    • I believe you're referring to the Franke machine. I agree these ones aren't as good as the Cafina machines. I think & hope the Franke ones are a trial as I've only seen them at a handful of stores.

      • Yes that's it! I think Mc.Cafe used Franke at one point. I'm not sure if they still do.

    • +1

Agreed. My local has the Cafina. If the staff on duty does not maintain it, the milk comes out diluted and the coffee taste horrible. It comes to a point when I see who is working and know if the coffee would be decent or bad.

      • Agree, it's watery and spotty. When it's not maintained well, it's much, much worse than the touch screen one.

  • +3

    It's on their website today
    https://www.7eleven.com.au/coffee

  • Got mine fine. Able to use own reusable cup (non 7/11 branding) and advised only the $1 option is free with your own cup. Brisbane, QLD.

  • P.S. Watch your manboobs grow with the amount of full cream milk you drink within the month lol

  • I guess the size they'll let you get for free depends on the store/employee, but it certainly doesnt state anything in the ad.

    • I don't know why they'd restrict it? I mean it's not one per day limit, so what's the difference between getting 2 free $1 coffees per day, or just getting one $2 free coffee per day? Same thing.

What if I loved coffee and went in hourly to get $1 free coffees? That's okay, but I can't go in every two hours and get a $2 one?

      • +1

Store owners butt hurt, that's all.

Same with HJ shake and win and any other promo "head office" introduce.

  • +3

To me it would make more sense that you have to apply online someway and receive a unique barcode which you can save on your phone, or using the 7/11 app. Then have it scanned at the register each time.

This way, each store would have a record of each free coffee they issued and be reimbursed for it by head office or however it works? I mean normally does each store fund their own expenses for milk/coffee beans etc or just paid for by head office?

    • I'd be interested to know this also!

      • +1

I asked the attendant andhe said he just pushes a button and has no idea how it's all sorted out.

  • +2

Got mine today. Attendant asked me as I was waiting for the machine to prepare my coffee what did i get. I said a regular flat white. Is it only regular size? No, I just need to know what it is so i can enter it into the system. You can get whatever you want. Thanks, I will top up with a short black. Cheers!

  • +6

My local 7eleven probably dodgiest store there is, when there is deal in apps it's always empty in the store, store cashier always have this stupid grin on his face, lets see if they can hide coffee machine in the freezer this time, who is laughing now!

    • maybe it does run out sometimes. I saw people go for it 7AM or 11PM when it updated.

    • +1

If you have a legitimate issue, call up 7/11 customer service 1800 247 711 and speak to them.

  • +4

I would always approach the cashier first to verify these sorts of promo, and have also always scanned my free coffee voucher upfront prior to getting a coffee just to ensure there's no misunderstanding afterwards- always a hassle and embarrassing if there's a queue behind you. Seems to work well for me so far so will do the same when I start redeeming free coffees on the way to work.

    • This is exactly what I do and did. I got a bonus chat too :)

  • Heading in for my first 7/11 experience tomorrow. How customisable are the coffees? E.g. Can I get a small with an extra shot?

    • Don't think so.

    • +1

Yep as long as it fits. I sometimes get two short blacks and add hot milk after. It’s close to a magic.

      • Awesome, thanks, will do this tomorrow. I ended up just getting a latte as there was a bit of a queue at the machine and didn't want to hold everyone up while I examined the machine.

  • BTW i havent got lock price reward for awhile after i used the voucher.

    anyone same with me ?

    • +1

I got the reward, but who needs it when the coffee is free anyway.

    • I didn’t get it for a few months earlier this year but have this month and last month.

  • +1

I tried the store on Corner Queen and Lonsdale St (Melb) the attendant didn't know about it and said I needed to pay for it. I showed the page on the website and they backed down immediately.

Hard to tell if they're pretending to not know about the deal to see if they can get a few extra bucks or if there was an internal communication failure regarding this promo.

    • Probably the same kind of store that tells you the Myki machine isn't working when you ask to top up (which is half of them in the CBD).

  • I used my own and charged me!! Rooty Hill Rd 7 Eleven! they advised it's only for their reusable cup!

    • Awww thats a load of crap! I’m tyring Mount Druitt station in half an hour

      • I should've shown their advert, including the fine print. Give it a go and let me know :)

        • +2

Mount Druitt station works! showed him the ad and he even said i can fill anything $1, $2 of $3 as long as I tell him so he can put it in the system. Free coffee is so good! 😝

    • +1

Call up 7/11 customer service 1800 247 711 and speak to them. They will make sure the store knows the details of the promotion.

    • Complain to head office.

    • +2

Yeah my local store tried to pull this on me as well. Asked to see the app, I pointed to the massive banner on the front of their shop. Then he said it’s only for their keep cups, and I just showed him my own one and said it was for any reusable cup. He didn’t look happy about it at all but he knew the conditions and was just trying to dodge it.

Are the store owners paying for this or something? Why are they not tracking the sales?

      • probably just hate having to refill the machines all the time

  • Mount Druitt station works! showed him the ad and he even said i can fill anything $1, $2 of $3 as long as I tell him so he can put it in the system. Free coffee is so good! 😝

  • Got a free coffee today at Crows Nest in Sydney - no problems. I had reusable glass cup. I just selected the $1 size which filled about 75% of my cup.

  • Worked fine (free small coffee) for me today in Moonee Ponds, VIC today. Brought my own soft plastic coffee cup (looks like paper, but isn't) that I got on Earth Day or some other green event. Cup isn't large enough to get a medium or large, so don't know if that works or not.

  • +1

Got another one at Blacktown Station, woman attendant said only 7-11 branded cup. I said the official facebook comments says any cup and then she backed off and said go ahead. She didn’t care which size i chose so i got the $2 and just walked out. Seems like some 7-11 are well trained and some not

  • +1

Had no issues with my local. No queue at the machine, and the cashier simply wanted to know what we were getting so he could put it through the registers. We were free to choose any size.

  • I went in yesterday with my brand new $1.50 Kmart reusable cup (not great but good enough). No issues and all I have to do is go in again and I'll be up 50c!

If I get 195 cups of free coffee that makes the ozbargin phone I bought a few days ago free! That's how it works, right?

    • +1

Unless you drop dead first with caffeine overload. :)

  • +1

Confirmed that I got a Super $3 size for free from store - 136 Queen Street, Brisbane, QLD, 4000

  • +1

All the stores I have visited have signs up free coffee.

So there shouldn't be any issues anymore.

Even when I go up to the register the guy just waves at me to go!

Yay, good customer experience. Coffee not bad!

  • +1

I was told by a shop owner who do really know the deal is coming and not know how headoffice will pay them.

Not sure if they should track the sell but i have to say those shop will lost a bit on their sales because at least half of their coffee sales turned free now.

  • A Melbourne store I went to had a hand written note asking you to let staff know what size you got. Any size was permissible. I feel bad for not telling the staff yesterday now. Whoops.

    • I try to tell the staff, but they keep waving me off. They look at my cup and then say off you go.

      • +2

Yeah, I went to the counter to ask if there was anything I needed to do. The attendant just raised his hands and yelled "FREE!!"

        • same at my local store.

        • Lol he's awesome

  • 7/11 wants the machines busy and sucking customers into the store to buy all their other overpriced shit. It's a great idea, even better if you fill up while you're there.

  • Went to the 7 eleven today at West Ryde and the attendant claimed it was only free with their $15 reusable mug.
The sign says nothing about that. She claims the sign has a mistake and still gave it to me for free. Until they fix the sign up, I'll still take my own mug and expect it for free.

    • +1

Call up 7/11 customer service 1800 247 711 and speak to them. They will make sure the store knows the details of the promotion.

  • claimed mine today. was told to just come to the counter before/after making the coffee to let them know what size i got.
no lines but had to clean up a bit after the grotty bogan who spilled coffee, sugar and choc powder everwhere.

  • +1

Went for my free coffee, but the machine was being cleaned. Oh well, got a voucher for a free one next time. Voucher expires on 12/08/2019, so I guess voucher only entitles me to a free paper cup!

    • +3

That's understandable, so many pigs don't know how to clean after themselves (saw a guy just spill the chocolate everywhere, knocked his cup over and left), the staff do a good job refilling and cleaning.
