Free Coffee with Any Reusable Cup 6/8-2/9 at 7-Eleven

8290

Just got my morning coffee from 7/11 with by keepcup and was told by the attendant that next month all coffees with a reusable cup will be free. So a whole month of free coffees if you use a reusable cup.

He didn't mention anything about it being only linked to their branded rCups, and I wasn't using one today, so doesn't look like that's the case. But maybe someone associated with the store can confirm.

Offer available only to customers filling their own reusable coffee cup made of multi-use plastic or glass and suitable for hot liquids. Make sure your reusable coffee cup is clean. Not in conjunction with any other offer. Valid to 02/09/19.

    • No, it's a single use cup.

This comment chain reminds me a bit of "single use" plastic bags

I overheard this from headoffice supervisor. It can be any cup and not one from the bin outside (Sic) . Thereafter it will be $15 for a month of reusable coffee cups which you purchase in store.

    • +4

      Sorry what's $15?

      • So $15 a month for unlimited coffees as long as you bring a reusable cup?

      • a month of coffees….

      • -2

        The coffee cup is $15

        • +4

I'm so confused. So you can bring in your own keep up and have free coffees, or you need to buy one from 7/11 for $15 to get free coffees? Your initial post says "It can be any cup".

          • +2

@placard: For August I think it can be any cup, then Sept 1 onward it has to be one of their own?

            • +1

@mcncl: What, so every month you need to buy a new keep cup from them??

How will they know you're not using last month's keep cup? How do they charge you this $15 per month and check to know if you've paid it or not?

              • +1

@placard: I think they're saying. For August any reusable cup with get a free coffee. From Sept on any refill in their own branded rCup will be free. Not that you need a new cup every month.

                • +11

@NigelTufnel: That would mean free coffee for life after purchasing 1x $15 cup. I dont think thats right.

                  • +1

                    @t_c: Sorry, I mean with a $15/month fee. :)

              • @placard: I think the logical way to do it is everytime you buy a Reusable cup for $15, you get some voucher (Card or in App) which the shop can scan everytime you buy a coffee which is valid for 30 days.

                • +17

@andyhui01: Does seem wasteful to have to buy a new keep cup every 30 days.

                  • @placard: Still better than unrecyclable cup every day

                  • @placard: Not wasteful if you find your old cup a new home :)
Donate it to the local thrift shop, they'll get a buck or two for it, and you keep getting $15/month unlimited coffees..
Going through mugs that quick they'll need little more than a rinse too, saving on dishwasher space or dishwashing liquid!

Oh boy. I was really going to try and drop that afternoon coffee…

    • Can you tell me how to use the machine. Or video

      • +1
        1. Put cup under coffee spout
        2. Select milk type (only required if you want low fat as the default is full cream)
        3. Select coffee size - $1 regular, $2 large or $3 super
        4. Select coffee type - short black (only available in $1 regular size), long black, latte, flat white or cappuccino
        5. Enjoy! ☕
        • Thank you. Click it all one after the other then machine works, or machine does it's thing each click?

          • +1

@capslock janitor: The machine will only start once you select your coffee type.

It's pretty straight forward to use to be honest. Just take your time, read the prompts on the screen and you'll be fine!

It seems the slurpee generation has all grown up.

Did they specify a maximum cup size?

    • Multipurpose! A bucket, who would have thought?

      • Might be hard to fit under the spout. ;)

7-Eleven should introduce communal work space and tables…host a meeting there everyday for a month

  • +3

Sounds like a great deal but I get the feeling it's possibly too good to be true. That would be a lot of profit they will be forfeiting to give out free coffee for anyone with a reusable cup for an entire month! I'm interested in the $15 unlimited coffee pass if that ends up being true though.

    • +6

I dunno. I get a coffee almost every day from 7/11 but never actually pay for the coffee itself. I either use a free coffee voucher for locking in, or a free coffee with a muffin purchase. I know that's not the same as completely free coffees, but this would be mostly to get people in the door and hoping they buy something else with a higher profit margin that the minimal profit missed out on the $1 coffees.

      • Where you getting the vouchers from out of curiosity?

        • 7/11 fuel app. One per month for locking in fuel.

          • +1

@The Wololo Wombat: Yeah, plus you sometimes get random free coffee vouchers for inconvenience. I was given one last week because I had to wait an extra 20 seconds to check out as the guy was topping up the milk. My local seems to give them out willy-nilly.
Also, I think there was a month around easter where they gave a voucher for free coffee that lasted a few weeks.

            • +1

@NigelTufnel: I think they need to keep up the competition as Shell and United (with a Pie Face) are also offering $1 coffee now.

I've tried Shell and United and their $1 coffee is as good as 7/11.

              • +1

@placard: Yeah, my local Caltex also offers $1 coffee. Though the $1 seems a fair bit smaller than 7/11, and my the one time I tried I didn't think it tasted as good as 7/11.

            • @NigelTufnel: Yea, I've literally gotten 10 free ones in a row - the lady gave me 7 vouchers and then kept saying "oh, don't worry about it this time" when I tried to use them haha!

        • 7/11 calls them "offers". They show up in the "My Offers" section in the 7-Eleven Fuel app.

    • +4

Profit? I hardly think they'll lose out. If anything, they're losing profit already as the coffee is a loss-leader. You're talking about a company that sells a regular coffee, with milk and sugar included, for only $1 - they're using it as a drawcard to get people to buy other things, notably the Krispy Kreme doughnuts which are conveniently placed right next to the coffee dispensers and the hot foods or sandwiches right next to the cash register.

      • +9

Actually I think their coffee makes a lot of profit.

Let say average price of 500g coffee beans $20
        1 show about say 7g coffee. So 1 cup you'll use $0.28

        1 small cup 245ml say 5c a cup.

flat white milk to coffee ratio 1:4
        2L Milk at $2, 1 cup coffee uses 196 ML so $0.20

Adding all that up the cost of 1 small coffee is $0.53.

        They charge $1. That's 82% profit on a coffee.

That's VERY profitable. This is based on assumption of the cost price which for them buying in bulk probably even cheaper. Note no staff is required, just the machine.

        • Adding all that up the cost of 1 small coffee is $0.53.
          They charge $1. That's 82% profit on a coffee.

          Huh?

          • +1

            @NigelTufnel: It's actually 89% profit based on his guess-T-math
            (100% profit on 53c is 53c)
            So 89% of 53c is 47c to make a $1 total

            EDIT plus everything below :)

          • -2

@NigelTufnel: lol I was also like huh xD

If the total cost is 53c and they charge $1 then profit is 47c, or 47% profit

            • +2

              @I Smell Pennies:

              No, it's not 47% profit, it's 89%! That is: 0.53 * 1.89 = ~1

          • Capital and maintenance costs on such high volume machines.
          • Electricity costs (making steam for the espresso and heating the water and milk is energy intensive).
          • Constant attention required from staff.
          • Very high wastage of cups and lids and coffee.
          • Shelf space which would otherwise be used to display other merchandise.
          • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: Go home, John Howards been looking for you

          • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Yeah, these are the bigger costs. Maintenance of the machines don't come cheap, nor does the electricity.

          • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: And at certain stores, the homeless people who walk in, make a coffee, fill it with sugar, and then walk out without paying, unconfronted…

        • +2

There certainly isn't 200ml of milk in a cup of coffee. When you press the milk button mostly water comes out.

Your price for coffee beans seems very high. I would say buying in bulk it couldn't cost 7/11 more than about $5 for 1kg.

        • Those coffee machines they use are not cheap… ask a 7-11 franchisee what they cost.

        • Factor in the cost of the machine, machine maintenance, the electricity it uses all day 24/7 and they wouldn’t be making much of a profit. I think it’s pretty clever to introduce the bring your own cup for free coffee idea… they save money on cups and I’ve filled up there instead of Caltex this week so I could get the coffee.

      • There is good profit on $1 coffee, but 7/11 also sell $2 and $3 coffee and they are not 2 or 3 times in size for a constant profit margin.
There is actually a huge profit on the $2 and $3 coffees.

      • My guess is the intention is just get people to stop in for fuel. If you commute an hour to work and pass 10 gas stations you'll stop at the 7/11 now since you get a free coffee.

    • +1

Profit? I'd say offering $1 coffees is a loss leading strategy already. At least this way they don't have to pay for the throw away cups which might actually make this more profitable for them.

    • a lot of profit forfeiting? the coffees are a dollar a pop. that's not a lot of money.

  • -1

    oh yeah!

  • +1

I've been thinking about getting one of the rCups. Will give this a go. Like their coffee. But I stop the last cm or so of hot milk and add 1/2 cm of cold milk as think it's way to hot and a bit too week as standard.

    • That depends on the 7-eleven store. Sometimes they aren't hot enough, but those hot ones are great for road journeys.
