Pretty good price. How about other European countries?

    • Berlin, Germany also seems fairly cheap. And Air China to Nice, France and Paris, France and Amsterdam, Netherlands as a sample.

How far out do airlines open up fares for? Looking to travel to Greece in July 2020. What’re your tips for jagging a great price? Could be about 10 of us going if there’s such thing as a group discount?

    • Depends on the season, but definitely not more than 12 months, so you'll need to keep an eye out for a few months yet.

Group discount is rare, unless going through STA Travel I believe.

Best way to save money is to look at sales and for airlines like this that are carry-on only fares. Also look for weird routes - last year I went Sydney to Tokyo to Dubai to Nice because it was cheaper than flying into say, Paris. We loved Nice too! Aim for the continent/country or nearby, and look at the prices around. So you could even look at Istanbul as a destination, or fly into Athens and out of Istanbul or Venice or a near-ish city.

Cool. Thanks mate. Lots of good info there. I appreciate it

Scoot are pretty good for a budget airline, but be aware of the 21 hour layover at Singapore on the way back.
-also check out their business class fares - similar to Jetstar business, and 1/2 to 1/3 the price of full business.

If you don't check in luggage or eat food on the trip.

      • True. I was doing a long haul via scoot. Think it was Singapore to Sydney overnight. Had ordered breakfast. They served it with a can of Coke. I said ah no coke anytime, let alone breakfast. Can I just swap it out for some water. They said no and wouldn’t give me water without paying more.

        • They said no and wouldn’t give me water without paying more.

They charge for water too ?????????

          • @jv: Yeah, we had a group of eight in the same situation. Collective disbelief.

            • @Bellpop: Isn't there an OH&S issue if they don't provide water?

              • @jv: Haha Good point. International waters? No legislation to conform to. Great way to make money on their behalf though. This was about four years ago so maybe they’ve upped their game but haven’t flown with them since.

                  Ask when over Australian territory.

                  • @jv: Haha noted.

                  • @jv: That's not how laws on aeroplanes work. The laws of the flag on the side of the plane are what apply when the plane is in transit (so for Scoot, that would be Singapore).

                      Not true.

I complained about a person smoking in front of me many years ago. Hostess said they were sitting in a smoking section. I mentioned it's illegal to smoke on flights within Australia. A few minutes later, the pilot announced to everyone that smoking was not allowed until we left Australian air space.

                      • @jv: Amazing….

                          LOL Sherlock Holmes…

The days when we got free water on planes…

                  • @jv: I've had AirAsia (on an flight to Australia from Malaysia) deny me water unless I purchased it. I told them that since they were selling alcohol they are required to give free water and they just said no they weren't.

I didn't really think there was much I could do at the time.

        • Honestly, what did you expect. You are flying cheap and nasty airlines. Soon they will work out how much air you breath and charge you per cubic litre based on your BMI

          • @goober:

            I'll bring my own.

Great deal! we got this deal earlier in the year and flew Scoot in June and can thoroughly recommend. Scoot is co-owned by Singapore Airlines and uses their planes on legs where there is no Scoot plane available as their orders for additional planes haven't been met. We flew Singapore Airlines flight from Syd to Sin. The Sin to Ath flight was 11 hours on a brand new Dreamliner. Our stopover time was 6 to 8 hours each way, not too bad really, saw the new shopping centre and ate a few places, but could of easily gone into town. We had carry-on and 1 item only (10kg permitted) and this was more than enough room, particularly as we spent most of the time on the islands where you really don't need much. Athens is a hip fun place and the islands were magic!

    • Sounds great. You flew outside of school hols?

      • Yep, mid season it was called, just before school hols and before the Europeans' high season. It was as hot as North Queensland minus the humidity, terrific weather for enjoying the aegean beaches with a cold Alpha beer.

        • Awesome. We might do long service leave to jag these before school hols. Thanks for the heads up

Yes, you have to pay for water, however in Sydney and Athens you can buy water/drinks at the airport after security and in Sin fill-up with chilled filtered water at the gate. Given its $680 return a few bucks on water/beverages on board is not a deal breaker. In Athens there are amazing bakeries at the airport at the gate, we had some freshly baked buns and pastries with Feta cheese a big favourite. Happy holidays!

Why can't you top up water bottles with free water?

      • Yep you can do that. I was just alluding to the fact that in Sin for some reason there is a secondary screening and anything liquid >100ml gets binned just at the gate.

My main concern about LCCs on long haul is some of the savings that people think they are making don't eventuate due to the extras that are required (Meals, drinks) and unexpected (luggage) that can happen. I'm also not frilled on no water policy on Scoot, any airline that has a trip over 6 hours should at least provide tap water.

  • Just drink the water from the tap in the toilet, problem solved!

    • Yeah, that is probably a good backup. I know they say don't drink, but they would have the keep the water supply clean as I've washed my hands and mouth with the plane water and I've never got sick from it.

I'd imagine it's just regular tap water which would contain chlorine, making it relatively safe to drink.
