any good in a surveillance system? basically the same, power on 24/7 fairly consistenently written too?

  WD Purple may be what you're looking for. Designed for continuous writes.
  
  With that said, I know many people use Reds in Synology NAS and have Surveillance Station running 24/7. I'm not sure how quickly they'd degrade, by comparison.
