Very similar post to one from the other day when everyone agreed this is just as good an option.

Agreed. I would have gone for that but it doesn't support 4096 x 2160 @ 60Hz. Lenovo does. Might be a deal breaker for some people.

Who spends $5k+ on a professional monitor and then drives it with a $50 USB adapter?

If you're doing the sort of work that these monitors are designed for then you'd already have a pretty decent GPU so why wouldn't you just plug it into that?

Unfortunately my X1 Extreme doesn't have displayport. Needed to connect two monitors. These adapters are doing a perfect job.

          • @nvdshams: What adapters are you using for your x1 extreme?

            • @Amos: X1 has two usb type c/thunderbolt ports. I am using adapters posted in this deal.

          • @nvdshams: Unfortunately my Asus Vivobook with the mx150 does not support USB C - HDMI even with active adapters. Wish USB C actually worked as it should not with a ton of limitations and no spec listing to state if it does or not carry video through C

            • @SimplySolvedIT: USB-C only describes the physical port, not the implemented specification.

              • @ssquid: Yeah, imagine if it worked like USB type A 2.0/3.0/3.1 which accept anything in it.

                • @SimplySolvedIT: Then they sure as hell wouldn't be $19 since the adapter would basically have to include a GPU.

                  For example:
                  https://www.startech.com/au/AV/display-and-video-adapters/US…

                  • @ssquid: Missing the point… Laptop with GPU cannot output with USB-C to HDMI.

Also that adapter is $55 elsewhere.

                    • @SimplySolvedIT: I think you're missing the point… these adapters only work if the host port supports video output. Simply being USB-C is not enough to guarantee that, because it's a description of the physical connector rather than the signals it uses. You can have USB-C that only implements spec 3.0 or even 2.0.

If you can find that Startech adapter for $AU55 (not $US) I suggest you buy a bunch and start selling them on ebay.

            • @SimplySolvedIT: Yes it is confusing with different capabilities. Look for ports and cables with a D (DisplayPort) or Lightning bolt (Thunderbolt) which should support these adapters.

        • My home monitor connects through usb c so no issues there. But what about when I travel on business and visit lots of different offices that have never heard of usb c and have only just upgraded to connect to screens using hdmi? Happens to me almost every day of my life.

        • For thin and light devices like ultrabooks, Macbook Pro's. Also, 4K monitors are not all expensive. There are cheap ones.

But, I think 4K HDR is not supported with this dongle.

        • With DisplayPort over USB-c you are plugging the monitor into the GPU, it is just that you are using a USB cable to do so. In some cases with the ports available doing this makes sense for one reason or another.

      • I would bet that it does. There's no real circuitry in these adapters, it's all in the host (which determines the resolutions available).

        • I wish, but 3 adapters used all different types and no go.

      I know I'd rather a Lenovo adapter over a non-branded cheapie.

  • You guys have confused the hell outta me!

Anyway, please recommend me a similar adapter that can support 2 monitors with extended desktop to use with my Lenovo Yoga 520. The laptop can just sit on the desk with screen turned off while 2 x monitors have extended desktop.

The monitors are just normal 1080p and have DVI ports (equipped with DVI/HDMI converters)
