Isn't that around the price with controller? I think I paid $170 for mine with only the remote.

    • +1

Na cheapest recently was around $199 with remote or $278 with controller through Scorptec

      • it has definitely been cheaper than $199 remote only. Recently the prices are not that great…

        • Centrecom had a deal a while back when I picked up the Nvidia TV with remote for $168.00.

A couple of months ago it was raining Shield deals for under $170. Where have they all gone?

    • Last deal at $180 was back in Jan?

      • Time flies I guess. There were plenty deals in November last year.

        • +1

Yeah like I said not the best but cheapest around at the moment if you want one. Decent price

          • @4foxache: Yeah I wasn't critising your deal, nothing wrong with it. I was just wondering why there was such a dip in price back then. Testament for how good the Shield is I guess, still stable in price after all this time.

    • They've cleared stock in preparation for a new model. They've apparently revised the X1 on a 16nm or 12nm (basically 16nm++) silicon node, which is also what's going into the updated Switch.

That should mean proper VP Profile 2 support (important for YouTube HDR), and perhaps AV1 and HFR support.

  • what the difference between this and Chromecast?

    • +1

Chromecast will cast media from a device (phone, tablet) to your tv. This is an actual media player.

I picked up Nvidia shield the other day and it has blown me away.

    Nvidia shield:
Best media player experience I've had. Super fast, no lag.

    Why I like it?
    - Plays 4K content with no issues
    - I am able to connect all my Logitech devices to it (e.g. MX Master 2s, K600, K400) to the shield (it should support any BT device)
    - I then sideload Firefox Android which allows me to install any FF extension. For example I install Youtube ad blocker + uOrigin, so now I can surf Youtube/websites on my TV with zero ads.
    - I have also installed heaps of apps on it and it doesn't even lag one bit, e.g. ABC, 7plus, 9now, SBS, CNN, Netflix, Hulu, Fetch, Kodi, CBSNews, Reddit, CuriosityStream, PBS/Nova US (which has hundreds of high quality docos), BBC iplayer (thousands of free TV shows), KayoSports, Spotify. Some of these require VPN, which means I also have NordVPN/PIA app installed). Nearly every app available in the Play Store should be install-able on the Shield.
    - You can install Play store games and play on the TV. People say don't buy the Shield controller (use PS/XB controller) since it's a ripoff, however I've found it works really well the the NS device. Had a few friends come over to experience the Shield and they all bought one afterwards.. That's how much it impressed them.
    - To top things off, this also has Chromecast built in.

For media consumption, this could 100% replace my $600 NUC. Sorta regret buying Chromecast Ultra because for a little extra I could of bought another Shield. You will have zero regrets buying a shield.

    • And dont forget, it also plays emulators like a god, everything from snes genesis to psx dreamcast gamecube etc. Its a glorious little system.

I couldn't get anything (BBC, Netflix in particular) working with my VPN (Nord) and have many regrets buying the shield. So much so that I'm taking a 15% hit to send it back

      • +1

It's not the Shields fault that you can't get BBC and I am assuming non-Australian Netflix to work with a VPN.

        • +1

Generally need to default back to factory netflix app to work with vpn. As netflix app itself is building in detection

          • @4foxache: This peeked my interest as I just recently grabbed the Nord VPN three year deal and will need to look at setting this up, any more info?

            • +2

@hey aj: On the mibox I just had to uninstall all netflix updates and revert back to the factory version, VPN then worked for everything with Nord. Remove any auto updates.

        • Update @UNO, you're not wrong and I was an idiot. Followed what some of the people down below suggested and succeeded. Remote still not great, but have already got a replacement for that so all good. Thanks for the brutal call out - It made me re-attempt getting it all to work.

Wierd, both work fine for me. Perhaps use a less well known VPN provider. I also have PureVPN installed on my NS and find that works fine with bbc iplayer + netflix usa. The blocks could be due to these super well known VPNs having their IPs blocked. Fr example, I could not get Hulu to work on any NordVPN connection because they were all detected/blocked, but changing it to lesser known VPNs worked fine.

          Thanks for this, will investigate

  • I thought $199 was the new price….

  • I love my Nvidia Shield. Hopefully yours won't develop the stuck in 720p mode fault which alot get, including mine. People quick to blame the TV but i dunno. Rebooting and switching hdmi sockets sometimes work to get it back to full res.

Also paid $170 back via Black Friday deals.

  • I get that this is a media player and its different from chromecast, but what exactly does it do? I'm a little lost. Also this was on same at Shopping Square from memory for $199 with the remote.

Gracey, take a look at overshopper response. He lists a lot of what the shield can do!

      • You are amazing, thanks!

  • Does this have co-op games that are any good?

  • is this the new android Oreo version?
