    Bad bargain.

Not a bad bargain, a decent deal considering they are $250aud minimum anywhere else. Popularity with the device has increased so deals are less common, but yeh i would like to snap one up @ sub $199 if possible. :D

  • Thanks OP

  • There's a new one coming soon FYI

Any press release or confirmation of this and it's features?

      • +2

No, it's rumors and speculation only.

        1. First Shield was 2015, refresh 2017, maybe that's a hint at another refresh in 2019.

        2. Google Play's Developer Console contained information on a new Shield with specs very similar to the current one. New Controller and Remote too.

If the new Shield has the Tegra X2, then I'd definitely wait, but all info so far points at a Tegra X1, much like the 2015 and 2017 models.

        1. There is one unnamed source claiming that the Shield refresh will be released in November alongside Google Stadia and will support both Stadia and the Stadia controller at launch. This synchronized release doesn't make complete sense to me, because Stadia will be a game streaming competitor to the Shield's GeForce Now.

TL;DR: If the Shield deal is good, buy now. The next release is probably going to be more of the same.

        • if it is more of the same then what is point of releasing it?

          • @pinkybrain: For the same reasons that they did it in 2017, I'd imagine.

            • @yak: hope it has a better GPU
              else not worth the upgrade

also why they not add a microSD card slot
that would allow us to add more storage and it is neater than have a usb drive connected.

              • @pinkybrain: The new Nintendo Switch update later this year has revealed good odds that the new Tegra X1 chip will run about 20% faster.

We'll have to wait and see I guess.

I would hold off on buying a Shield for now.

          • @pinkybrain: Minor changes / issues addressed ie remote volume design flaw. Reboost hype, make more sales. Money of course? ;)

  • Serious question, I have a vodafone 70 Aud device for streaming to my digital non-smart tv. What does this do that makes it worth the extra?

Shield handles 4k hdr playback better. Browsing through GUI and loading of Metadata is much faster/instant.
Gaming is available as is google assistant integration, plex servers, better response as a tvheadend server.
Basically depends what you want to do, but if your a 'power user' for lack of a better term, with an extensive media collection, the shield will provide a more satisfying experience.

  • I have seen them for $199 a couple of months ago. If you are not in a hurry better deals will come along. I got the one with the controller from Scorptec for $239 a while back.

  • does the nvidia shield play 4k hevc 10 bit (HDR/non HDR) smoothly?

Also how is the gaming like?
is mainly stream from you pc
or it supports android games as well?

    • No problem for me with 4k hdr hevc playback on shield TV.
I tried their game streami g, but due to lack of local servers the latency made it unplayable. Local Android apps/gaming won't be a problem.

      • are they 10 bit 4k videos?

what about streaming games from local pc?
is it laggy or as good as playing from a gaming console/pc directly?

  • Yes 10 bit 4k no problem with kodi over ethernet.

I don't stream pc games locally, there'll be plenty of forums where it's discussed ( eg. the official nvidea shield TV forum).

  • Price increased (slightly)
