Echo Sub must be paired with a compatible Echo device. Echo Sub is optimised for Echo (2nd Gen) and Echo Plus (2nd Gen) devices. Currently, stereo pairing, speaker groups and multi-room music only support music playback over your wireless network, and do not support Bluetooth, 3.5mm AUX in or TV/video connections. Some Echo devices support different stereo and subwoofer configurations

Echo Stereo System Device Compatibility Australia

Supported Echo Devices Sub Pair Stereo Pair
    Echo (2nd Generation) Yes Yes
Echo Dot (3rd Generation) Yes Yes
Echo Plus (1st Generation) Yes Yes
Echo Plus (2nd Generation) Yes Yes
Echo Show (2nd Generation) Yes *
Echo Show 5 Yes * Yes

*Currently, Echo Sub only supports music playback. Video playback is not supported. Some bass frequencies may still be produced by the Echo Show.

Echo Stereo System Device Compatibility US also adds

Supported Echo Devices Sub Pair Stereo Pair
    Echo (1st Generation) Yes
Echo Show (1st Generation) Yes *
    • I suppose this sub is not optimized for Echo Plus (1st Generation). Will the steamed paid Spotify music be impacted? If so, how?

Urgh, so tempted to buy and hack-out the Amazon junk to use as a nice little active Sub in a standard rig… but I'm not sure I could be bothered. Absolutely would if it was an 8"!

    • Why wouldn't you just buy a regular sub??

Nicely finished, mains powered 100W sub for $99? Where?

  • Cheers OP. Got one to pair with my 2 echo + first gen

Be aware that stereo pairing will not work without a premium subscription to one of the music services. You cannot stream Spotify over your network with a free account, paid only. I recently returned this sub along with two 2nd generation Echo devices because we could only use bluetooth with our free Spotify account. These devices are severely limited already but the fact that you can't even use them as intended without a paid subscription is ridiculous.

Ended up buying the JBL 3.1 soundbar and haven't looked back. Much better speakers, MUCH better sub and can be used with all of our sources including streaming with a free Spotify account using our Chromecast.

    • Thanks for saving me a hundred bucks :)

    • Can you stream Amazon music free version from prime?

      • +1

Pretty sure I could yes but the selection available was very limited. The equivalent to Spotify would be Music Unlimited but again it's a paid service. Spotify I find has the best selection, all available on a free account.

god damn it…. i thought i was safe to come back onto ozbargain post prime days….. i've ordered one.

  • What's the general consensus about the echo speakers compared to sonos speakers?

Kinda out of the loop with all this new stuff on the market..

    • I'm interested to know as well. I've got a Sonos One and its great in a small room

Echo stereo and sub only work for music streaming over wi-fi. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/7514470/redir

Echo devices are not designed as hi-fi. The major weakness is their 360° sound dispersion pattern produces inaccurate stereo imaging.

I don't know enough about Sonos One to comment.

    • Think about it this way, internally Sonos speaker’s are closer in design to conventional speakers (cabinet with larger forward firing drivers) resulting in a much more refined sound.
An Echo speaker design is very similar in design to a Google Home Mini (tiny single upward firing driver), so this setup would be like having 2x Google Home / Home Mini’s and a small subwoofer.

Regarding this single upward firing small driver design on its own (Amazon Echo / Google Home Mini), the actual sound quality & sound dispersion you will be getting would be similar to that of a small portable Bluetooth speaker.

      • You are thinking of the Echo Dot, which is equivalent to the Google Home Mini. The full-sized Echo has two drivers: 0.6" tweeter & 2.5" woofer.

        • Yeah had another look at iFixit, and apparently it has a separate tweeter and woofer, but they are both tiny and upward facing.
Standard Google Home achieves louder sound with small single driver & 2 passive-radiators, but I would still put them all in the same bag (sound wise).
This is the best picture I could find of the inside of Echo Plus Gen 2, a slight improvement in driver size you could say.

Sonos easily out does them IMO. They actually have some know how in speaker design. If you are buying a speaker / speaker system from Google or Amazon, I guess you you know what to expect.

  • I got an Echo Plus on Prime Day, returned it already.

Amazon Music selection is very limited - everything else requires a paid subscription.

Gonna switch to Google Home which plays music from Youtube TOTALLY FREE

    6" sub LMFAO

If you're gonna get a sub, at least get a footlong

  • Lol why bother. Just get a soundbar, the YAS1080 will do, stream songs from anywhere, plug in anything. I got a echo for free ages ago from Amazon, its unplugged half the time

    • +1

Some things are better unplugged, like Nirvana's best album

      • I used to think it was fantastic but unsure if its dated well

  • My Echo Sub arrived 15 minutes ago. Amazon has out done itself in packaging.

    • One B0 shipping box with paper padding, slightly dented because it is oversized compared to the Sub.
    • One reinforced double wall box, form fitting.
    • One clear plastic bag with handles.
    • Echo Sub packaging box in black.
    • Black non-woven PP bag with handles and Echo Sub branding.
    • Please share your initial thoughts on the Sub?

      • It is effective, and it gives noticeable improvements to the low end. It can get uncomfortably loud if you abuse the volume with the right (wrong?) kind of music. Complements my stereo pair of Echo Plus Gen 1 well. It is surprisingly not too boomy and has some resolution to the bass; I can hear imperfections in bad recordings.

The one very big con is that the entire 2.1 setup only works with music streaming services. I am extremely disappointed that the Plex Skill will not work in stereo. It would have been an expensive mistake if the devices were not on sale.

Currently, stereo pairing, speaker groups and multi-room music only support music playback over your wireless network

This sentence from Amazon isn't 100% true.

Regular prices: not worth it because of the severely limited choices of music sources.

Special prices: a nice toy, especially if you listen to online music a lot.

      • And I want to add that without Plex available for local music streaming in stereo, I am unable to listen to my own compilation of test tracks. What I said above about the quality of the Echo Sub is therefore based entirely on casually listening to random music I found online. No critical evaluation was performed by me.
