Dell is having another 30% off on selected XPS 15" and 17" laptops. I've been waiting for this since I missed the last deal on XPS. Very good deal imo.
Would love to add the specs in but I have to run to work now.

So no MoneybackCo then?
Edit: Regarding customizing of this option. Is it just a software option or includes 5.1 audio hardware?
"Internal High-Definition 5.1 Performance Audio with SoundBlaster X-Fi Audio software [add $11.00]"
Can anyone link me to a good review of the XPS15.
Positives about this deal: Includes i7 processor and blu-ray drive.
Negatives: Includes blu-ray drive but offers standard 1366x768 resolution as max. :S
They actually offer better resolution than this, you just have to pay for it.
It does burn Blu Ray so you can watch it on your HD TV I guess?
Can it burn blu-ray with the standard option or the upgraded option which is ~$40 or so?
The upgrade for the screen on the 15" is $200 and for the 17 inch is $80.
DEFO get the screen upgrade. I'm looking at mine right now and it's gorgeous. Also, yes the standard is just a blu-ray ROM (read only) so you'll need to fork out $50 or whatever for the burner. Seemed worth it to me.
Quick review [XPS15]: Amazing screen, amazing speakers. Can't praise them enough. For an AV experience you're going to be hard pressed to do better. I can max out the volume on this thing and it doesn't distort whatsoever, and it is very loud.
Graphics are decent, but not top of the line. Performance in games if you're an enthusiast may leave you wanting, but for me I can play Crysis warhead on gamer settings, 720p, and it's very playable (somewhere over 30fps). Oh yeah, it doesn't handle the high res for games well. IDK the technicalities of it, but it just doesn't handle 1080p, even on low graphics settings. You can max out most games at 720p though. (of course outside of gaming it will do 1080p buttery smooth for all your movies etc)
All the rest of the specs are pretty nice, and will handle most anything.
Design; might love it might hate it. I like it, reminds me of portal :P. The metal parts of the case give a quality and solid feel.
As for heat, it can get warm-ish on the left side when gaming/doing intense stuff, but it's not unpleasant really (especially in winter haha). The fan can get a little noisy while gaming, but it's not really distracting when you have all the gunfire going off :P. As soon as you stop it quiets down very fast, and when idling/doing light work it's near silent. The cooling system is good and pumps out the heat well. And from my experience, the processor is pretty much constantly clocked around 2.5Ghz (up from the standard 2.0Ghz) with turbo when needed. Like an hour of gaming and it will still maintain it.
Keyboard + trackpad are nice, get the backlit, for 20 bucks it's totally worth it.
So yeah. Good laptop. Highly recommend it. Though that HP from a few days ago seemed nice, also a 1080p screen, and better graphics (though were Radeon). I'd guess the speakers/screen wouldn't be quite as nice, but that's just a guess. It was from HP's media line so I doubt it would be bad but I don't know. Here it is: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/46803
EDIT: Oh right, I think the HP deal is expired. Something to consider though.
So no MoneybackCo then
MoneyBackCo —> YES. So do remember to use the MoneyBackCo link to claim back 7% (minus your annual fee).
If you are wanting to upgrade the 17 incher to higher than 8GB ram. - Cannot be done.
There is a way around this though. Dell will allow upgrade to 12 or 16GB ram if you choose the 3D HD Screen. Click the upgrade to 3D screen, then go back and turn it off and the option to upgrade to higher RAM will be there.
If you dont do this, you will only be given option of 8GB.
handy little trick.
Note the 30% discount is really a $570 reduction on the XPS 17
If you make upgrades to the CPU etc the upgrades are not reduced by 30%
no but you still get %30 off the core system. Bloody good saving!
Exactly. I ordered an XPS17 yesterday since it had a whopping $300 cash off. On the phone now with Dell looking to cancel it and place it again. Stupid Dell !!! If it wasnt for OzB then i would have missed out on saving an extra $270 !!
Ya! it was not the case when i bought my XPS 3yrs ago!
Got a discount over 1K with 30% off!
I took advantage of this last time for 30% on the 17". Fantastic laptop and I did go the higher resolution, though 3D was not worth it for me. (17.3"(43.94cm) FHD WLED AG (1920x1080)).
With some additions and removing things like assistance with set up/support mt beefed up unit was delivered (before the ETA)for $1357.
I did utilise Moneyback by clearing my cache prior to going into the site as instructed on the last post of this deal and got a confirmation that it went through, but shall wait and see as it does take some weeks before it comes back.
Highly recommended, though if you are looking for portability the 17" does have a bit of weight (easily supported by my coffee table :-P). Great deal!
For my specs it's actually worse than yesterday's deal, also worse than last time's 30% off deal.
Its good, but Lenovo is having an awesome deal atm with the Edge 520. I realise it may not be up to par with the xps, but at less than half of the price, its a steal
is the lenovo edge offering over $500 off its retail?
I would be in this deal instantly for the XPS 15 if the resolution was higher (768 vertical pixels is shocking! 1440x900 should be the industry minimum for 15" laptops), and the physical styling was a little more up to date with the rest of the nice looking laptops on the market, that thick rounded underside on it looks like my 3 year old work Toshiba… ewww
Nevertheless, the other specs are good for the money
There is an $198 upgrade option to Full HD for XPS 15. But yeah, it should have been the default.
Did some test customizing. If weight is not an issue, go for the 17 inch. It is a no brainer.
Using all similar specs, the difference between a 15" and a 17" came to $50.
But, this $50 covers:
1) A bigger screen size
2) 1.5TB HDD compared to 750gb max on the 15".
3) 3GB Nvidia compared to 2GB for the graphics card.
4) 22W JBL speakers on the 17" compared to 20W speakers on the 15".
I posted this below on yesterdays Dell deal regarding their customer service.
Bought my XPS M1530 back in Feb 2008. Worked perfectly well until it decided to die just last week June 2011. I had got the 3 year upgraded warranty at the time of purchase.
Well the laptop died 3 months after warranty expiry. Rang Dell up. No questions asked, replaced the display screen, motherboard, touchpad, outer bezel and speakers.
First thing they told me on the phone was, don't worry about warranty we'll do it. Was extremely pleased to hear that.
Will definitely purchase Dell again.
good stuff mate. couldnt see anything on the JBL speakers though. I did see people mention in the reviews but i couldnt see them in the specs.
once you are done adding a 17" in the cart, review through the individual specs and you'll see the 2x5W speakers + 12W sub woofer for the 17" and 2x4W speakers + 12W sub woofer for the 15"
XPS 15 for $1119 & XPS 17 for $1329, nice prices.
keep in mind,
Maximum of 1 unit per customer.
