Thanks OP. I was going to rip my old DVD set, but noticed that they re-released it semi-recently in HD and it's meant to look a fair bit better since it was shot on 35mm. Going to use Tuneskit to strip the DRM and load it up into Plex.

While they did crop it for 16:9 aspect ratio, it was originally shot with a lot of dead space above and below the frame, so the cropping isn't noticeable.

    • +16

I personally think the cropping really changes the framing for the entire show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFIrsitJW5M

      • +2

Watching old shows remastered in 16:9 can be funny. I was watching an old episode of NYPD Blue and in the remastered version you can see palm trees in the background of one shot (most of the show was filmed in LA).

      • +2

Yeah this one show (like Buffy for instance) that should stay 4x3 for me.

      • +1

Thanks. I'm happy to stick with my DVDs after watching that plus I'll always own it when on physical media.

      • I'm fine with it. Id rather make use of the full large screen I paid for than let it go to waste.

    • What's the point of ripping it if you own it on iTunes? Isn't it just as easy to view either way?

      • Depends on if you have a lot of Apple devices or not

      • DRM is tricky. It's almost at the whim of the copyright holder to remove the media.

      • +4

So Apple can't take it away from me if there's a licensing disagreement in future, plus I prefer to keep my library of content centralised in Plex.

      • Wouldn't you rather all the content you own in one place?

      • +4

Because you never technically own it when in the t&c it states they can remove content at any time for any reason.
One of the reasons I prefer physical media over digital.

    • Are you talking about that Festivus set?

    • +1

It's hugely noticeable for me. The X-Files HD transfer was remarkable, but this one should stay 4x3 I think.

    • I purchased this and it's not good quality but it doesn't matter, it's the best sitcom ever made.
There is heaps of film grain and the upscale from SD to HD is 100% pointless, in fact looks like it's stretched the imperfections to make them more obvious.
While I haven't seen the DVD versions I would expect it to look no worse than this.
I did see it on Stan and thought it was just " Stan quality" , it pretty much exactly the same on iTunes.
However, I repeat, to me it doesn't matter the show is a must own.

That's alot of money for a show about nothing

        The Joke

        Your head

        • +1

I got the joke. I have seen Seinfeld and am very aware of it being "a show about nothing". It's not like some in-joke when it's about the most popular sitcom of all time.

          • +2

@Faro: So it was just a poor reply. LOL.

  • +23

Still the greatest sitcom of all time IMO.

      • +12

It's actually funnier the third and fourth time around.

          • +11

@jv: In that case, every time is the first time.

          • @jv: if you have attention problems, or getting story problems like me and Jerry then it can be enjoyed for a long time until you finally get what is happening :P

        • This is a tough one. I agree with you but the negging thing.

      • +17

Yeah, well the jerk store called and they're running out of you!

    Serenity now

    • Might try the stop-short tomorrow.

  • +10

That deal is so good that I'm no longer master of my domain.

  • So what’s this like in HD? Is it 16:9?

    • +6

It's not very nice in 16:9. It was not remastered by the original director or production team, it was basically just smashed out for American widescreen TV. It's heavily cropped and is very noticable how 'strange' it looks to those of us who are very familiar with it. It takes a lot away from the original intent of the director and changes the feel and meaning of many scenes, with lots of key information lost by being cropped out of the frame.

In saying that the picture quality itself is excellent because it was originally shot in 35mm film like a cinema movie. The perfect scenario would be 4:3 in HD quality or the choice of both 4:3 and 16:9. At some point it may get released in 4k because 35mm film is greater resolution than 4k and hopefully they will release it in both 4:3 and 16:9 in 4k then to cater for everyone.

For hardcore fans, definitely ensure you have the boxed DVD set, maybe add this as a complement. For someone who has never seen Seinfeld before they may not realise what they are missing, but they will also get a partly different feel for the show as a result of the heavy cropping of many scenes.

      • There is a 4K restoration being done right now, it is looking very good, so I think it will be the one to get. Question is, will iTunes owners get the 4K upgrade once it is released?

  • Anyway to watch this without a Mac device? I.e. Apple TV, iPhone etc. Any hacks to get it on an Android TV?

    • +1

I have an old HP Laptop with iTunes installed, a HDMI Connection to my TV lets me play all the iTunes Shows , Movies, Rentals on the TV.

    • Yes, iTunes is available on Windows computers too. Just plug a HDMI cable from the computer into the TV if you have a computer with HDMI.
As for hacks, yes, plenty. Basically you need to use some software to strip the DRM protection out of the videos then you can do with it what you want, like use Chromecast to wirelessly broadcast or view via Android TV. That is a bit of a hassle for the average person, but Google will give you may websites with instructions.

Also, various Samsung TV's from the past couple of years have built-in Apple TV to stream your iTunes content if you didn't want to use a computer or any Apple branded devices. Probably only of use if you were in the market for a new TV though.

  • iTunes…blehh

What is the deal with politics? I don’t get it. Am I right people? 😬

  • Does iTunes include the Extras or just the episodes?

Did you ever eat the bark off a pineapple?

This deal is making me thirsty.

I’m out there jerry and I’m loving every minute of it! Problem with this is the true Seinfeld fans already have all the discs or just watch on Stan!

Is it 4x3? If not, forget it.

    • For the eventual Blu-ray release, they should offer both 4:3 original and 16:9 remastered editions. Make both the purists and the proles happy.

They'd easily have the space. (Unless they wanted to scan the film at 4K so you could read the cereal boxes.)

      • It is being done at 4K now, and yes, you can read some of the cereal boxes :)

        • +1

Where is the info on it being done in 4k?

          • @Twisty: I'm one of the people working on it.

    • 16:9
      1920x1080

      ~55GB/season
      (well, on Amazon it is)

    • Exactly. The 16:9 version loses a lot of the feel of the show and the intent of the original director due to the heavy cropping which loses a lot of the scene a lot of the time. The 16:9 version was just smashed out for American TV to make some extra cash. Can't wait for the 4k 4:3. As this was shot on 35mm movie film, which is higher resolution than 4k, it will be no technical issue.

  • Is this as good as the Office?

    • It's about on par with the UK Office and better than the US Office.

    • +2

Seinfeld has been my favorite show since I was a young blood up until about 3 years ago.. when I gave into watching The Office, and Parks and Rec.

In saying that Seinfeld is still Comedy Gold
