No Lock in Contracts for All Plans (Changing to Month by Month) @ Telstra

2010

Maybe useful for those that like to change mobile providers regularly.

Bring your own phone or add on a new one and pay it off over 24 or 36 months. If you leave, simply pay out your phone.

From Gizmodo

Big T just completely changed how its plans work. It is now moving exclusively to month-to-month plans with no lock in contracts. And they will be available for handset-based plans, as well as when you BYO Phone.

This is what they look like:

Small: 15GB data for $50 a month
Medium: 60GB data for $60 a month
Large: 100GB data for $80 a month
Extra Large: 150GB data for $100 a month

That's it. No more leasing plans, and no more $199 Unlimited data plan.

All of these deals comes with free access to 5G during the trial period, which runs until June 30 2020. Thereafter it will be an optional add on for the Small and Medium plans, costing an extra $15 a month. It will remain free for customers on Large and Extra Large plans.

NB: no excess data charges. However, if you go over your cap your speed will reduce to 1.5Mbps.

    • Wow, first to move.

      1.5mbps unlimited for $50 a month.

That's got to capture that market. I wonder what other plans we will see from other providers soon.

Unlimited speed capped plans are very common in overseas markets, e.g. Asia. Although, they are drastically cheaper at around $10-20 a month AUD equivalent.

      • +3

Actually Telstra have been offering this for a while now on even cheaper plans from time to time. I, like many others on here, have the $39 30GB/mnth plan which also includes 'Peace of mind data' which is 1.5mbps unlimited after 30GB is exceeded. I've had this for about a year now.

      • +1

Not the first. Vodafone had their Endless Data (same thing, 1.5Mbps after a certain amount) at $50 for months.

        It's now $55, but $45 if you're a student.

        • Yeah. Damn, I didn't even notice how fast the telco sector moves.

Saw $30 per month for a tablet only sim equivalent too, but requires 12 month contract. Very good for low use households that only stream a bit of youtube and mostly do facebook, instagram and others.

  • +16

    $50 for 15GB ouch.

    • I pay 49 for 20gb and a galaxy s8, bit crazy aye?

      • It's not too bad, got to consider the cost of the phone (unless it's a lease).

      • +1

        @ obit11 - I pay $49 for 60gb with international calls and a S8.

        • Amaysim has 30gb with unlimited overseas calls for $30.

    • Yeah considering the boost plans it'd need to be at least 20gb.
But do you then get access to that extra band? that Telstra doesn't resell? - I might be uninformed here.

      • Boost offers all bands that Telstra does.

But will be interested to see about getting 5G.

(But need a Mobile or Modem setup for 5G)

        • -2

          Boost doesn't offer 4GX

  • +12

Optus no doubt feeling very grateful for these changes.

    • +1

      They will be next.

  • +18

This makes a plan with phone more expensive

    I prefer the older structure

Also boost and belong works out cheaper month to month and is telstra network

Don't see how this is a deal TBH

  • +2

Curious what happens to current leased customers….

    • I checked and tested this with my current lease plan.

I signed up in Sep for iPhone XS Max 256gb lease plan.

If I want to change contract today, I just need to purchase the phone ($1440).

  • Hope prepaid remains unchanged…

  • +22

Cool, now please list an actual deal.

  • +4

If someone wanted to sign up, you'd probably be better off going through JB Hifi.
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/mobile/

$45 for 50GB + $200 gift card, 12 months contract but who would really pay $50 for 15GB for the convenience of moving constantly when you can just choose Boost.

As someone on Whirlpool pointed out, up until yesterday an iPad with 10GB was $29pm. Now with the new structure, it's $52pm.

    • Dammit I was in the Telstra Store on Sunday and about to purchase that exact iPad plan. I didn't have enough points of ID on me (despite being a former customer and them finding my old account in the system), so was going to go back on my lunch break today. There is no way to get an iPad plan (including device) and 10Gb/data under $52/month now. I get that you can leave after the first month, but how is that worth me paying $23/month!?

      • +1

If you can do with Optus coverage, you can get it for $34p/m for 5GB or on special for $35.50p/m for 30GB.

Looks like they've raised the minimum cost too though, it used to be $30 from Optus too.

  • Belong is telstras backup conjested network I believe. So boost will probably be better.

    • is boost not on the backup network then?

    • nah Telstra Prepaid is Telstra backup congested network

  • +7

Why would anyone pay those amounts

  • +2

Lol. $15 per month to access 5G on the S small when it's barely operating.

  • Optus has always had this, but it's an option so you can willingly sign up to 12months BYO or pay extra to go on a M2M….why wouldn't Telstra just follow this strategy?! so confused.

    • +3

Check Telstra management and who’s responsible to bring this up in the meeting.

  • +10

Move to forums? Don't think this is a deal, makes prices overall more expensive..

  • +5

The big news here is no more data bill shock.

    • Yes!. I've toadally felt the pain before.

  • Yep PainToad has got it !

But remember to take account of issue for international usage.

  • No lock in contract, pay $50/month but get only 15gb?? Who’s in Telstra management now that responsible to introduce this marketing plan?
Telstra just like other government owned business unit in Asia. It seems not really interested with their customers. Even if Telstra bankrupt the management/employees don’t really care.

I think this plan will fail just like Telstra 24x7 app. 😬

  • +3

At least this makes me not tempted at all to go with a another Telstra plan, unless the JB Hifi ones stick around.
Boost Prepaid may be the go.

  • +4

How is a ~25% price increase a bargain?

No international inclusions now (unlike Voda and Optus), prices on lower plans up (although they now have shaped data, which is something), no discounts for buying a handset on a contract, charging extra for 5G on some plans. The list goes on with what's wrong.

Boost and Telstra Pre-paid offer far better value now on the Telstra network…

  • +2

Apparently they are trying the get the Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) to >$50/month.
Which should be easy to achieve since the cheapest plan is $50/month!

  • +19

    no comment…

  • +1

looks like im staying with optus , $35 pm for 40 gig (12 month contract)

  • +1

I guess because TPG doesn't seem like a threat anymore the price war is over?

  • Going backwards with data? Currently on the old Telstra F&F $49 25gb with S8 plan, 6 months remaining so seems like Optus is winning my business next year.

  • Yes, this new structure sucks but Telstra Pre-Paid now seems like a solid option with data banking.

You even get longer expiry dates with the $40 and $50 recharges and a good data allowance, seems like a reasonable option to be on the Telstra network directly with Telstra.

    OzAnnouncesments.com

This isn't a bargain. JB reguarly smashes this.

    • +1

It also affect JB customer as well, now its impossible for JB customer to change plan to Telstra plan as they don't have any lock in contract now.

  • +5

Not a deal. I can see Telstra profit to dive further this year.

    • +1

or up since most people still are very loyal to this brand, especially rural people and businesses. it will not surprise me with this move to stabilise their cost base without giving consumers so much bargaining power + ensuring good dividends for shareholders lol

      • Yep, I think there is a perception for the majority of people that Telstra provides better reception everywhere, which absolutely isn't true. They have a bit more reach way out there, but for 99% the best carrier is essentially random.

  • +1

Looks like I'll be staying on my current Telstra $69 plan with 90 GB per month, unlimited overseas calls and SMS to 15 countries and global roaming of 2GB and unlimited calls per month…

    • Im happy that I negotiated down to just $45 per month from $65 JBHiFi 12-month plan with handset back then with a P30 and $200 eGift card. Will not let this go lol and keep enjoying 60GB per month with unlimited international calls + free handset Huawei P30 whether I get Android update latter on or not, can't complain for $45 per month for 12 months lol.

      • +1

When you talk to people do you end sentences with 'lol' or only when you type?

        • +2

give Web the Rapist some slack will ya?

  • I think this will be their default pricing, obviously no bargain if you go with default pricing on anything. I don't imagine that JB plans on Telstra will go up.

    • +1

probably the last time we see them now

  • So is Telstra thinking these are better just because of the month to month option ?
I'm currently getting 40GB, no excess data charges, unlimited calls & sms to overseas countries for $39 with Telstra.

    • +1

and you better stick with it lol

  • +1

Op how Tf is this a deal?

  • +1

Wow, this makes the effective price of everything go up through the roof.

  • +1

No data share sim options either !

  • THis is way too expensive, there is no way i m paying 50 dollars for just 15 gb.

    • but families with teenagers are happy now to not worry about data lol

  • this is so Vodafone move now :), good thing only for data heavy users and cannot afford for big data plan & Telstra's share holders due to increased and stable charges with their plans from now on. BUT, it is a big NO for OzBargainers as we will hardly ever can take bargaining deals from now on :((, RIP JBHi-Fi $500 bonus gift card and 12-month contract plan with handset.

  • Stupid move !!

Why would someone pay $50 for 15 GB and +$10 for international calling? Or $60 +10 ?
Sad they removed international calling, I hope others don't follow.

  • no flat fee international roaming package either - $10 per day OR PAYG

  • +1

If i was a telstra share holder I would sold my shares by now. Management is totally out of touch.

  • Hey guys, just wanted to point out the follow i saw on a daily telegraph article. I hope this isnt true! Im paying $39 -70gb atm - hoping to keep this for as long as possible!!

“All existing Telstra customers will have to move to the new plans as part of the pricing overhaul, however, which Mr Penn admitted could take longer than the company’s goal of two years.

“We’ve got eight million postpaid customers so I’m sure there will be some cohorts of customers where more engagement will be required to ultimately move them across,” he said.”

    Source: Daily Telegraph

    • Most plans are 2 years, so maybe when your plan finishes, you can not renew it any more and have to go to one of their month to month plans.

  • Getting a phone with it locks you in for 3 years paying off the full retail price now. No discounted phone on a plan by the looks of it.

Ironically, contracts are the only thing that's keeping my $300 a month going to Telstra at the moment.

  • This is opposite of bargain. They have totally removed contract plans all together. At-least they could have kept existing contract plans as-is and introduced new non-contract plans. Also new plans don't have any international calls included. I guess I am going to miss Telstra $69 plan forever.

  • Not a deal. I just learnt that will be going from paying $49/month (which include $10 bonus credit + datashare sim) to $65/month.
