    Relative newbie question
Would I need this as well?

NewsDemon is a reseller of Newshosting which is on the Highwinds backbone. Newshosting and all their resellers use DCMA. They are the exact same.
If you get too many incompletes you want a provider on a different backbone. Usenet Express, Usenet Farm and Vipernews are independent providers that provider block accounts but no where near the retention of Highwinds. UF and VP both use NTD which is better than DCMA but don't have the retention of Highwinds. Takedowns are much slower on NTD. If you need long retention 3900+ (like Newshosting) but NTD instead of DCMA, Eweka is king but $$$.

This map really helps identifying backbones.

  • Awesome, thank you!

No idea what i just bought. Does this have vpn for android? I'm headed to china for a few weeks…

    • +1

I am currently in China and just try it.
Nope it's VPN is useless in China. Stick to ExpresssVPN.

    • You will need a VPN app to punch through the Great Wall of China, and a special server to receive the VPN connection.

the TLDR is, you need to make VPN traffic look like "good" traffic. Most VPN uses standard tunnel settings, and Deep Packet Inspection or DPI will detect and drop regular VPN, unless you make it look like something else. Like video traffic, or email, or something "safe" that would use 10gb/hr… Etc.

So when you watch UK netflix in China, you are probably appearing as weather updates, or DNS traffic, etc. As time goes on, the ports and layers need to change, so the VPN app needs to be adaptable.

most VPNs won't work as they use typical ports and the connection will time out, DNS will also fail, etc.

China's VPN blocking tech is always adapting to the technology available, so you will probably need a dedicated app to use irregular ports and irregular headers because most Chinese ISP's are using packet inspection, and their peering is also using packet inspection.

      Firewalls everywhere.

Nord, vypr, surfshark and express, have a non-standard app, which is needed to modify the ipsec headers and ports used to get past the first DPI scan.

Then there's an "international" DPI firewall that looks for packet origination and which IP is asking for what traffic, etc.

It's a bit more full-on, which is why very few VPNs work for Chinese locals, tourists get a relatively "safe" internet connection.

Make sure it works before you go to China, as they won't download or show up, and switching DNS won't work, it gets filtered and redirected.

    Great deal poo poo head

I'm on NewsDemon which is a reseller of NewsHosting. If it is anything like the bundled NewsDemon VPN it will be utter garbage. However there is no need for VPN on Usenet. If you are concerned about what your ISP/RSP seeing what you are downloading just use a SSL port.

to put them in context of the other 'cheap' usenet providers, NewsHosting have "HW Media" / Omicron as their owner/backbone provider. Formerly known as Highwinds, now Omicron.

Content and retention, speeds and service will be the same/similar service to EasyNews, Newsgroup Ninja, UseNetServer, etc. around 3900+ days of retention, 10-12 years as indicated. They are also tied to resellers like Frugal Usenet

HW Media/Omicron has a near-monopoly on usenet at the moment, with hundreds of resellers, and they often try to undercut "unlimited" deals like this to undercut their own resellers.

As a result of the monopoly effect of Highwinds/Omicron on UseNet, and their "Peering" relationships (or lack of) with other companies, you won't always see a lot of content that comes from non-US/EU usenet providers, not just because of DMCA or EU filters.

    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7d/Usenet_P…

Most people get a deal with Abavia/Highwinds (now Omicron/HW Media) and a block account with Non-EU/US usenet companies to get "missing" posts that abavia/highwinds have filtered or never saw, due to how large/isolated their feeds are.

  • Sweet,.i already had subscription until feb 2020 but just signed up for a second account to access this lifetime savings.

  • Been years since I used Usenet, when nzbmatrix shutdown, and prior to that in the 90s for the actual message boards. Going to give this a try and see if there are any tracker sites out there.

  • I signed up on CC and had 3 transactions. $29.09, $1.45, $1.45.

    Anyone else have the same?

    • Currency conversion?

      • Not sure. Seems odd there are 2 transactions of the same amount ($1.45)

It was on a card that refund currency conversions too and there is no refund with it

    • At a guess - companies often input a tiny transaction to check if the card is valid and then reverse them a little (up to 3 days??) later.

  • Thanks OP.

Noob question, how do you see the most popular files on the usenet? AKA most popular releases

    • You should use an indexer. Most recommend NZBGeek because it’s easy to get an account. I can’t really comment on them because I don’t use them.

  • Expired it seems?

  • deal finished? doesnt show for me

  • Ok no just missed it!

  • Sad face… missed it

  • Yep, all finished here lads. :(

Damn I think it expired while I was reading the comments to see if it was any good haha

  • When using a VPN to use Usenet, I’ve been told it’s best to use a Canadian server due to legal issues (?) and that using an Aust server exposes you to tracing.

Wouldn’t a VPN be the same regardless of the servers location? Aren’t they all masking your actual IP?

    • Local laws MIGHT stipulate there must be a backdoor so the VPN in country X is really no longer 100% secure and/or private. Also the VPN company may keep logs, it's a bit messy as to which is a real VPN as you want/expect it to be. They are certainly not all the same as regards being completely private.

  • dammit missed it :(

Hopefully by signing this one up with a huge discount we won’t be treated like second class users (that’s what Getflix did)

Whoever subscribed but didn’t get welcome email with username.
You can just email the support and advising last 4 digit of your credit card number or you paypal email address
They resent me the userid and reset my password

    • I have tried this as well but haven't heard back yet. I'll leave an update how I go.

      • +1

I used the contact us web form on the support website. It was pretty quick getting response and problem solved.

  • So I've got newsgroup direct so I did well to not pull the trigger emotionally to buy. On a previous post with the back bone business, this is on the same back bone.

  • Bought it earlier today to replace my usenetserver sub. Thanks!

For those that missed ou this deal is identical https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/465616

  • I bought an account this morning and was working fine, now it says my account is inactive? What gives??

  • anyone able to setup pptp or l2tp vpns? I'm always getting username/password failed. Followed the vpn setup guide exactly, but I'm not using their software, just Win10.

    • I got it sorted via support. They reset all my passwords, and now usenet and VPNs work a treat. Really came in handy the last few weeks while traveling.

  • Lets all sign up to a provider, offering a ridiculous discount for unlimited access, and look forward to using them in years to come. kthxbai
