Amazon Kindle Oasis 7" $329 (RRP $399) @ Officeworks

200

The Kindle Oasis, Amazon's top of the line ebook reader missed out on Amazon's recent $50 off Kindle's promo.

This deal, at Officeworks' eBay store is an even bigger saving, at $329 down from $399.

You gift card stacking pros may even be able to get the price down lower.

If you're just after an affordable ereader, the current Paperwhite is the way to go, but this is the biggest screen that Amazon currently offers in a Kindle.

Also available via their eBay store if that works better for anyone.

Would love to upgrade to one of these just can't justify the cost. Got to be the cheapest I've seen it though.

    • +3

Yeah, took me some time to decide. Couldn't do it at $399, but at this price I convinced myself. I spend so much time reading that, per hour, it's pretty cheap, especially when I sell my Paperwhite.

      • You'd recommend it as an upgrade for Paperwhite users?

        • +1

          Not necessarily:

          • If you read a lot, and want the best possible experience that Amazon can offer, then get this.

          • If you want the biggest screen that a Kindle can offer (my excuse), get this.

          • If you like to have the Rolls Royce of everything, get this.

Commenter below had a good breakdown too.

I recently bought a shiny new Samsung tablet. I then realised that I actually spend more time with my Kindle, so I used that to justify upgrading from just the Paperwhite, mostly for the slightly bigger screen.

if you have a tablet, plus the kindle app, what are the benefits of one of these?

    • +11

Do your eyes a favour if you read a lot and grab a kindle. Much better anti glare and less eye fatigue.

    • +7

Kindle uses E-ink. It is effectively the same as reading a physical page, far less eye fatigue than using an tablet.

    • +1

A months battery life from a single charge for a start.

      • Sadly, the Oasis battery doesn't seem to last as long as the standard models. Still get me through a few days of heavy reading though.

    • +7

Less distractions, so you're not tempted to look at Twitter / Porn and just read the damn book ;)

      • +1

seems like one of the most important points so far lol i'm leaning towards the paper white, just not sure the extras on the Oasis warrant the extra dollars.

        • Sounds like the lack of 'extras' is where the benefit lies

You're right there except in my mother's case where she has to magnify the text to the extent that there's only one paragraph on the screen. Otherwise, I can't justify the higher price. Bought hers second hand from ebay.

If this is your first Kindle, definitely grab the Paperwhite. The most recent one introduced some of the previously higher-end features like flush screen and waterproofing. If you love it, you can then choose to upgrade to the Oasis (which is what I've just done after three separate cheaper Kindles in a row.)

  • For those who can wait, a new generation of color e ink should be just around the corner.

    • I'd love a colour e-ink reader with the build quality and support of Amazon. They've been talking about this happening 'any time now' for years though. Have you heard anything more concrete? *crosses fingers *

    • Can the Kindle Oasis be used for technical documents which are a mixture of text and diagrams. Or should I hold off for a colour e-reader?

I have one of these. It's great. I upgraded to this from an old 4th Gen, non-lit, non-touch Kindle (which still gets use).

For all the Oasis versus Paperwhite questions:

    Benefits of Oasis over Paperwhite
    - buttons plus touchscreen (I much prefer the buttons)
    - 7" rather than 6". This is especially good if you want larger text.

    Downsides of Oasis
    - Expensive
    - Battery life not quite as good (mine lasts about 2.5-3 weeks rather than my old Kindle which lasted a month)
    - Far fewer case and covers available

If this is your first Kindle and you read a lot, get it if you can afford it. If you already have a Paperwhite, it's not worth the cost to upgrade.

I like this Kindle a lot. I found it worth the extra money but, like reading, it's personal opinion. I recommend the Oasis but to be sure, if you know someone who has one, ask if you can try it for a night. That said, no-one's getting their hands on mine! :-)

The sharp edge was kind of distracting. So I took it off with Dremel. Now it’s been several months of daily reading - very comfortable to hold it in one hand.

    • I used an Angle Grinder on mine :)

  • Where is ebay promo when u need one. 3% is just not enough.

This is not a good idea, the price and lack of interest makes it very hard to resell.

  • +1

Thanks for that. I’ve really missed my Oasis since I lost it on a plane a couple of months back.
Been struggling along with an early model paper white since but it’s just not the same.

    • Did you find the Oasis overly fragile?

I've been going back and forth on this deal since it's been posted. I've still got my 2013 paperwhite which is really starting to show its age.
Main concern with is the glass screen. I take care of my stuff, but accidents could happen. Plenty of stories online where amazon doesn't offer to fix the product (even at a cost), and just gives them 15% of their next kindle.
I usually read about 1-2 hours daily, so a higher end model wouldn't be wasted.

  • I didn’t find it fragile at all, in fact I used it mostly without the case after a while.
Plenty of times I dropped it from my bed to the floor when getting sleepy without a scratch to the screen. Seems pretty hardy.
If you read for a couple of hours a day then in my opinion it’s worth the upgrade - the reading experience is far superior.

    • Thanks!

      Will order one for pickup!

        New model just announced overnight!

        • I ended up holding off after all!

Paid $90 more but the night light function will be a godsend!

          • @charliecereal: I hadn't opened mine (bought via this deal) so I returned it to Officeworks for full refund.

If you didn't do so, you should use the current 8% Amazon cashback deal via Shopback. You'll get almost $30 back off your pre-order! Cashrewards is offering 7% at present if that's more your thing. You can cancel your current pre-order, and reorder it via the Shopback link to get the deal.
