Samsung T5 Portable SSD Blue 500GB $103.20 + Delivery (Free C&C) @ The Good Guys eBay

941
PGOODGUYS

Decent price for this portable SSD.

Also if you have an iPad Pro (3rd Gen), the new iPad OS (coming in september) now has support for these SSDs (and other hard drives). Other iPads will need adapters and dongles to power the SSD.

  • Exactly what I'm looking for .. Can it be price matched at places like Harvey Norman or OW? I was planning to get one today but no Good Guys next to where I live.
    Cheers

This is price with an eBay code, no one will price match I'm afraid.

      • JB didn't blink price matching a 20% off code when last I tried.

        • +1

Wow, never heard of that happening before. Can never hurt to try!

          • +1

@Natedogg: That's because they don't necessarily look at it as matching rather discounting something that they have a good maegin on. I'm sure these will be 70 within a year.

            • +1

@gimme: It's a very good price. If you NEED it now, get in NOW. If you only WANT it, but don't necessarily need it, then of course take your chances and wait another year (?)

These T5's are a very good product, however this model has been on the market for quiet a while now and Samsung has replacement technology already on the market that supersedes this unit. I doubt you would find the predecessor T3 unit anywhere now.

P.S. I have 2 of these T5's. They are fantastic for my needs and carry one in my backpack full time. Safe, secure, portable… :)

              • @et tu brute: "Samsung has replacement technology already on the market that supersedes this unit."

                Link?

      • +3

My local Officeworks just price matched this offer.

      • Why are you scared?

  • +1

    Cheers got the 1TB version

Same as buying two 500GB units plus $35 ish extra for the 1TB convenience

    • +12

So not the same as two 500GB units.

      • +1

        d'oh

      • +1

        No, it's only 1 unit

    • $289+portage vs $103?

      am i missing something here?

      • +1

        You missed the 20% discount.

        • oh okay, not as bad then. I still wouldn't pay $35 extra to have it on one drive, especially since it was $215 at bing lee last week.

    • Wasnt this cheaper at Bing Lee last week for $215?

      • +2

Yes it was, that is why I didn't bother posting the 1TB version. I am still deciding whether I should buy the 500GB or wait for a better deal on the 1TB.

        • +1

well if you only need 500gb then by all means go for this. but i wouldn't pay extra for the 1tb, especially since it was just $215.

          • +1

@Zazer: Agree. Some people think it's more convenient to have a 1TB, but for others it could be better/safer to have two 500GB as one can stop working, get stolen, or leave behind somewhere and not returned.

Also could leave one in a bag and one in the office/home if that works for you.

        • Wait if you can, the longer the better!!

  • +1

bought one, very little stock in melbourne for C&C but even with postage its cheaper than it has been from Bing Lee with postage.

I have a 250GB version and they are lightning fast if you have usb3.1 port on your PC, even on normal usb 3 they are faster than an ssd in an after market SATA-USB encloser and smaller.

  • +6

Damn, these get cheaper and cheaper

Wow what a "feature" from Apple, Android has supported hard drives for about forever.

  • anyone else getting an ebay error at checkout?

    • Try closing your browser, clear cache and then start over again. eBay site sometime gets the yips. Make sure you are entering the code "PGOODGUYS" where applicable

  • Tried 3x and it all errored. Even in incognito

  • Hi OP, do you have any portable HDD deals? cheers

  • +1

This might be out of stock? Rep tried to buy this using chrome, chrome incognito, the app … all erroring “Something went wrong”

    Please help

    • +1

I just bought one using the eBay app. Try clearing your browser cache or use the app.

  • SSD aside, 500gb doesn't sound like a lot of storage especially some USB stick / microSD cards etc can easily have 256gb … so 10% of the SSD size? Or am I missing something?

    • +2

The speed and probably the endurance as well.

I don't think you can get 500/512GB USB drive for $103.20, or even $130, that's as fast as the T5.

      • This one from previous deal is much slower, is it? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/463524

        • +1

From that link someone said that drive has 233MBs reads and 100MBs writes. From the link bellow, the T5 is doing 547 and 503MBs Read/Writes so readings a bit over twice as fast and writes 5x.

How significant that is will depend on your use case of course, particularly whether you need to do a lot of writing to the drive. I'm sure there's a convenience factor in having the USB connector built into a stick drive versus a seperate cable depending on how you use the drive.

    • Friend, for some cameras these are the best gb/$ solution. Mainly for high qulity video recording, which I can then plug straight into my pc.

    • +1

      missing something

-hundreds of MB/s transfer speed vs. 20
-multiple transfers at the same time

  • Thats one solid price! Tempted to grab a second one

  • +1

So apparently there’s no stock. But when I walked into the store they had plenty of stock. What gives?

    • I think they're shipping out of warehouse rather than from their stores.

      • But there was stock at other stores for click/collect, but not at any nearby stores. Then I checked those stores in person and they had stock.

On the other hand I went to order a memory card which had stock for click and collect, but when I went to get my order they said they didn't have any in stock and were having issues with orders.

        • Hmm do you think they keep stocks that they ship online and stock they sell in store? I'm just guessing here.

          • @panda120: Possibly. I have no idea, but what happened to me was pretty silly.

  • Can these be eaaily fitted as internal HDD to either my ps4 pro or xbox one X ?

And would this make much performance difference.
I'm guessing load times would be significantly improved, but then I'm not sure whether my ps4 or xbox would be able to utilize the extra speed etc of an ssd

    • +1

Help yourself and buy and sata SSD instead. Or use NVME ssd via USB. Much better than this

      • or buy this, crack open the case!

I assume it is a SATA SSD inside?

        • It is a msata drive inside. And the drive is simply a bad drive comparing to 860 evo.

  • It is better to buy 860 evo or 970 evo (NVME) and put them in USB boxes. About same price and same size. These 2 models are much better. They are much more reliable and faster and with 5 year warranty instead of 3 years.
The Samsung T5 is not durable and suffer significant issue if filled full. Samsung itself even is not willing to tell the endurance of this SSD. On the other hand 860 evo and 970 evo/evo plus are rated 600TBW for the 1 TB model.
    From Toms Hardware:
“Before we get too far along, we have an ethical duty to mention that our Portable SSD T5 2TB had a problem, but it didn't die completely. We filled the drive to 100% capacity with a single large transfer to test sustained performance. Performance didn't recover even after we deleted the 2TB test file and let the drive idle for several days. The drive could still read 128KB sequential data at 30 MB/s and write sequential data at 11 MB/s, but it wouldn't recover to full speed. Samsung plans to examine the issue and diagnose the error. Most users don't have a single 2TB file to move to the drive, so I doubt this will be a widespread issue. If I were to guess, it looks like the drive got stuck in a background activity loop that never ended. I'm confident Samsung will fix the condition and release an update.”

    • Did they confirm the fix they were confident would come never eventuated?

      • Even if they fixed it, it just can never compete with Samsung’s own 860 evo and 970 evo. It is not made to last.

    • noob question - what USB box should I get? any cheap ones on ebay?

      • +2

Just search “nvme usb” or “sata USB” on google and you can get a lot of choices of enclosures. NVME boxes about 30AUD, Sata boxes about 15 AUD. If there is a promotion, 3-20 AUD will be enough. But now I don’t see any promotions.

I got this by comparing the price from Officeworks for 103$

    • How? Did you show them the website? They only check the good guys website.
They don’t want to price match ebay price.

    • Adding to the comment above, Officeworks doesn't do pricematch with coupons including electronic codes according to their website

  • Will this work with mac os?

    • Yes, it works with mac, windows, android (and iPad, once iPadOS/iOS13 is released)

  • Anyone in Sydney have price matched with OW? Please share the store name. Thanks

  • I think they're out cos i tried to buy and the invoice said order was cancelled because they were unable to supply.

  • My order got cancelled.

Warning, do not ship to a parcel locker, they are unable to fulfil orders sent to Parcel Lockers.

Second warning, any refunds requires days for a refund - they need to send their refunds manually to their head office for processing.

  • For anyone looking to get a tracking number…they don't put your tracking number on your eBay order. Have to ask them by calling the store fulfilling your order.

  • The Good Guys has just sent you a refund :(

    • When did you order?

  • Crap was this cancelled. Argh and I did ask to be posted to a parcel locker
