Telstra 12-Month SIM Only Plan $65/Mth 60GB Data + $500 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card OR Several Handset Offers @ JB Hi-Fi (Port-in Offer)

4710

Hi all,
Just ported in my number back into Telstra using this amazing offer from JB-HiFi.

Basically you get $500 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card (with no expiry) when you sign on to JB Hi-Fi Telstra 12 Months Plan for $65/month which offers Unlimited Local calls and 60GB Data.

Update (20/06): As per latest reports from the comments, this has been revised to $300 Gift Card as of today i.e. $500 offer withdrawn a bit earlier.

For those who would rather buy a handset, there are several offers as listed below:
(I managed to have a quick glance at their internal email, so sharing the love)

Samsung Note 8 - $199 upfront
Oppo Find X 256GB - $199 upfront
Huawei Mate 20 - $199 upfront
Samsung S10e - $399 upfront
Samsung Note 9 128GB - $599 upfront
Google Pixel 3 64GB OR Huawei P30 - $199 upfront - Update (20/06)

LATEST UPDATE (13/06),
From 13/06 to 16/06, instead of the $500 OR the Handset Offers already mentioned above, you can also choose to avail one of the following offers:
$0 Upfront: Hisense 43" 43R6 TV OR XBOX One X 1TB Console OR iPad 128GB 6th Gen (Wi-Fi model) - Update (16/06): This particular option is now extended to 19th June ans is also open to new customers

$49 Upfront: Apple Watch 42mm (Series 3)
$99 Upfront: iPhone 7 (32GB)
$799 Upfront: Oppo Reno 5G
Update (20/06): These options are now expired

All offers are for port-in customers only. [Having said that, I ported out of Telstra for couple of hours this morning and managed to port right back in using this offer without any issues - so worth a go!]

Note: From what I understand, this particular offer may not have any signage to promote it in the stores, so do try mentioning it to JB Hi-Fi staff in order to avail the offer. This offer expires on 23 June but if keen I would recommend getting it sooner than later (just in case it gets withdrawn earlier). Have a great day folks!

Edit: To answer a common query from comments - This Plan does not include Peace of Mind (POM) data OR $10 International Calling Pack

Edit 2: For those keen on scoring even higher bang for the bucks, for an extra $4/month you can easily upgrade this plan to Telstra’s $89 BYO plan (currently discounted to $69/month) via Online 24x7 chat, thereby giving you (hold your breath):

Extra 30GB data (total of 90GB data including Peace of Mind (POM) data)

Unlimited international talk & text to 15 selected countries (i.e. Bangladesh, Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Lebanon, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, UK, USA and Vietnam)

International roaming - 2GB data roaming and unlimited talk & text in eligible countries (Argentina, Austria, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Laos, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macau, Macedonia, Malaysia, Mexico, Nauru, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Singapore, Slovak Rep, Slovenia, Solomon Islands, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, UAE, UK, USA, Uruguay, Vanuatu, Vietnam)

If you do international travel and/or make overseas calls to the above destinations this is the BEST VALUE mobile plan ever (in my humble opinion) as you'll be effectively paying just $27.3/month for all of the above! Update (20/06): Gift card has now been reduced from $500 to $300.

Can confirm that I was able to trade in a battered android phone (back glass cracked, and chip on corner of screen) for the $100 credit, and get the $500 store credit with the 12mo BYO $65 plan.

I was then successfully able to upgrade my plan to the $69 JB HiFi plan (with monthly $20 credit) 30GB+30GB 12mo BYO Telstra plan, courtesy of the lovely 24x7 chat person.

Be very aware that I have spent countless hours beforehand with 4 other advisors with absolutely no result.

    Good luck.

    • Hey mate, how did you get JB to honour the trade in deal as it expired nationally on 29th May??

      • I just said that I'd like to do the Pixel trade-in. They didn't bat an eyelid.

  • Ive been thinking about this deal, let me know if my thoughts are correct on this..

    A sim-only plan (like jeenee/pennytel/boost is $130-150/12 months)

The JB deal with Telstra is the same
    12 month plan @$65/mo comes + get a $500 JB giftcard

Telstra will further discount that to $49/mo (still unsure exactly what the wording I would say to Telstra chat for this? and after you buy this plan…do you immediately port into Telstra while youre at JB?)

    Plan cost: 49 x 12 = $588
    Pixel cost: 649 in store - 500 giftcard = $149
    [Buy a discounted JB giftcard @5% off - $141.55

    588 + 141.55
    = $729.55
    (12 month Telstra - 60gb/mo plan + pixel)

..If we value the pixel modestly at $500 then the real price is $229.55

Going back to the cost of a pennytel/jeenee/boost plan of roughly $130
minus the difference to ~230 is 100.

$100 extra for a superior plan and a good phone…looks very good

    thoughts?

    • Telstra will may further discount that to $49/mo.

It depends on the whims of the Telstra advisor. I got the Pixel 3a purely because of the excellent camera software reviews.

    • Dont overthink - this is a great deal. Even better if you can get it to $49/month.

  • +1

    Hey Mate,

Great deal - thanks so much! I got this today and managed to switch to the $49 plan via Telstra Chat. Saved me heaps! If I had more money to spend I would have got the $69 plan.

  • I used virgin mobile and switch to kogan mobile a week ago. Can i switch to telstra now? I googled and someone said “can’t port before 90 Days Same Network” is that true?

  • +2

Awesome deal. Thanks OP. I also managed to talk to live chat and get it to $49.

  • +2

Thanks for the deal OP, superb work.

    Just to confirm;

    • 12 Month $65/month port over from Optus.
    • Done both my partners and mine today.
    • Grabbed a Pixel 3 each (one white, one black 64gb)
    • Confirm that you can also combine with the $350 off for a trade in.
    • Went to Coles and purchased two half price Alcatel phones for $24 each.
    • Told staff what I planned to do and they were cool with it (almost impressed).
    • Went through no problems and then paid the $350 each balance of each phone.
    • Phones exchanged were even cheap Telstra branded ones.

NOTE: I literally told them what I was planning on doing and walked in with two brand new boxed phones and it was no issue.

    • Now to try alter the Plan via live chat….update pending.

    Thank.

    • +4

Cheers mate, feels really satisfying to see such a large number of fellow OzBargainers getting benefited from this deal. Appreciate all your valuable comments and sharing your experiences while availing this deal, thereby adding even more value to my post. Thanks all! :)

    • Shouldn't the pixel 3 balance be $849 each?

  • Anyone know the expiry of this deal?

  • Got the $65 with $500gc, then swapped to the $49/month via Telstra online chat!

The Telstra agent did say "Any promotions from JB HIFI i.e. the gift card will not be eligible anymore if we change you to the $69 BYO plan (with $20 discount)"

Seems like they are aware, let's see how it goes!

    • Any promotions from JB HIFI i.e. the gift card will not be eligible anymore if we change you to the $69 BYO plan (with $20 discount).

What does that even mean…they’re going to contact JB and have them void the gift card if you change plans?

      • LOL..Total BS :)

        • Haha, yeah that would not end well but it's just Telstra being Telstra I guess!

    • +2

I doubt they’d actually cancel the gift card. I just got swapped to the $49/month through their chat too. I don’t think this deal was made with the idea of people being able to Ozbargain the hell out of it so probably just a scare tactic.

But saying that I’ve already spent my gift card towards a new TV 🐥

      • Yup spent the voucher yesterday too, so I'm not concerned.

But it's interesting that they seem to be aware, I wonder if they will clamp down on it soon?

      • Be careful, they might come and take a chunk of your TV away.

  • Has the deal changed because i’m only seeing the $200 JB HI-FI gift card and not the $500 on the website?

    • This deal isn't advertised on the website.

  • As someone that's currently on a BYO Telstra plan that has run out, what would be the best options? Try and port out with another retailer and hope the port-in goes through?

    • Just sign up for a new plan then get online chat to cancel the expired service and swap the numbers around.

      • Fair call, my only issue with that is I need the same number due to work. Can't hurt to try though!

    • I'd be porting in and out

  • can someone explain why find x, s10e, and note 8 are not $499? their price are $999 on jb's website

    • Mate you are comparing RRP comparing cost after a discount.

      • yes after $500 gc they are $499

    • Those are the phones that are not doing so well in sales or they're trying to clear the stock, so they put a better bargain for those particular phones.

  • Can someone confirm if this is 12 or 24 months?

When I click on the JB link it’s advertising the Samsung s10e for 399 if you sign up to the 65 plan for 12 months?

    • It's 12mths and it's not advertised on the website, it's not even advertised instore…you need to go in and specifically ask for this plan and offer.

  • Watch out guys, make sure you save the transcript when changing or downgrading your plan from JB hi-fi to Telstra's. I just got my latest bill and got charge almost $500. I can't view my bill yet but I'm sure it's for the cancellation fee. Will sort it out after I can see the bill.

    • +1

What is the exact value and description?

    • Be-aware that if you had a device attached to your old plan and you ported-out prior to porting back in to JB Plan - you'll still have to pay the device fee from old plan. Only the contract termination fee part is waived. Maybe your case is different but just saying, in general :)

      • I ported in from Voda so should fine. I signed up when they got P30 with $200 gift card. The 2nd number is when they got promo free P20 Pro for free with 24 months contract. Both of the number are moved to the Telstra's plan for 12 month contract and on both occasions I asked whether there is any fee to change the plan.

Need to wait till I got the bill to see what's the problem is.

        • Hhmmm… You moved from a 24 month contract to a 12 month contract?!

          • @mandelbrot: Yup, but double asked the chat agent whether I was gonna get hit with any fees and she said no.

  • +1

Just went to my JB this morning and they have a similar deal but only for a $300 gift card. Maybe different stores have different amounts? The $500 gets it across the line for me, but the $300 doesn’t quite get it done.

    • It's certainly there in the system, the guy I spoke to only knew of a $200 voucher so I had him talk to a manager who confirmed it.

    • +1

Can you keep us updated jorr?

      • I’ll head in store tomorrow and find out more. I may even try a couple of stores.

        • I purchased the plan for a friend yesterday at the Mount Gravatt store. No issues.

    • I was initially offered the $300 gift card as well but ended up with the $500 gift card offer after a quick check with another staff.

  • +1

Just jumped on Telstra chat and got downgraded from the $65/mth JB sign-up to the $49/mth plan without a drama, like it was nothing (no questions asked) to the CSO.

    Happy days and thanks OP!!

  • Can I ask is it a physical gift card?

    • +1

Yes. At least that is what I got with no expiry date.

  • Where can I buy a cheap smartphone from to get the discount on Pixel.

    • Coles - $24 per handset.

An Alcatel phone at half price.

      • And these are the smartphones right? I am with Boost will i qualify for this deal?

        • I'm not sure about the Boost situation, I'm sure there was a post previously possibly saying you wouldn't be eligible due to it being part of the Telstra group? But not 100% sure on that.

Yeah that was a cheap smart phone and to be honest they seemed pretty happy to accept almost any.

        • Can't port in from Boost, cos it's part of Telstra. You could try to port out, then port back in.

          • @mandelbrot: yeah the guy said it should be at least 30 days before you can post back to telstra to become eligible for this offer.

  • Just went in JB HiFi trying to trade in an old phone for the $350 pixel 3 credit . Was told the deal expired last month . Can anyone tell me how did you still manage to get the $350 credit ?

    • That shouldn't be the case, the store I went in yesterday still had that deal sign posted and advertised - I managed to go through the whole process no problems.

I would certainly query it and have a look on the website, you'll probably find it's still referenced on there.

    • +1

Tell them it's still advertised on their website and has an expiry of June 11th. The $100 trade-in is also still advertised but says expiry was May 29th.

      https://www.jbhifi.com.au/phones/

      Check the banner.

      • I was told this offer is active till the end of this month.

  • Seeking some clarification on the upfront phone offers listed in this post:

    Samsung Note 9 128GB - $599 upfront

Does this mean all I have to pay for the device is $599, or is there an ongoing monthly cost in addition to the $599

I'm thinking I could use my $500 gift card for a total of $99 outright for the Note 9?

    Thanks :)

    • It's an either/or thing mate i.e. you can either get $500 Gift card OR Note 9 subsidized for $599 upfront payment.

  • What did you guys say to the online chat to get the $49 plan? I was told because i was an existing customer it didn't apply.

    • +3

      Me:
Good morning Jhon, I hope you're well. I just ported to Telstra this morning but didn't realise there was a 60GB for $49 plan. Any chance I can change plans please?

      Jhon Menard:
To clarify, you want to change your plan for the number that you just ported in this morning, correct?

      Jhon Menard:
Is this for the BYO Plan?

      Me:
If possible, yes please and yes, it was BYO for $65/mth.

      Jhon Menard:
Let me see what I can do about this.

      Jhon Menard:
I have already reviewed your account and let me go ahead and process the changing of your plan to the $49 BYO Plan with 60GB.

      • Thanks mate did you just open the live chat on the deal page or through another avenue. Just want to see if you got to another department. Tried 3 people, they'd only offer me to swap to $59.

        • Yeah, I just hit the chat tab on the first page I opened.

          • @MaximumEffort777: Did you chat/make the change once your service was provisioned?
CSR is saying it won't allow to make a change to an order that is in 'provisioning' saying he will put a note in the file and that I talk again when the number is provisioned.
Edit: My number is not active on Telstra as yet.

            • @alterego13: Yep, I received an email and text from Telstra saying the service was active and about 15mins later I jumped on the chat.

It really does seem like one of those, it depends who you get scenarios. The guy I spoke to only took a matter of minutes to look into my account and switch me across without hesitation.

That or they’ve now legitimately cracked down on it.

              • @MaximumEffort777: I hope it's not the latter.
The guy legitimately wanted to help me out but said he can't edit an order that is in 'provisioning' so he has kept a note on my account and gave me a ref. number so next agent that I talk to can look at it. Not sure if that's a good thing or not.

              • @MaximumEffort777: Tried again this morning, but no go. Had to close chat to leave home for work. Will try again when I get a chance. Was only offered the large plan for existing customers :(

      • Signing up to $65 right now at JB Malaga. Let's see how we go with the online chat. Fingers crossed!

      • I don't know how their system works but when I asked them to change me to $49/60 GB plan, agent said that she tried putting me on that plan but system says that its re-contracting(as I am already a customer after signing up with JB) so only $49 plan i am eligible to is the one that is for existing customer.as usual she advised to go for the $59 plan but i din't go for it thinking i should give it a go again tomorrow and see if i get hold of anyone who can help me being one of those lucky one like yourself.any advise?

        • -1

I had the same thing, tried 6 people before i gave up. Ended up changing to the $49/30gb plan. Don't really need the extra data so still a win for me.

  • Boost and belong cant be ported.

You should be 30 days off telstras network (optus etc) to be eligible for this offer.

    • Boost can't be ported, but every other company that uses Telstra (e.g. Belong and Aldi) can be ported.

  • It’s all been a bit of a mess for me.

Went to my local JB this afternoon to sign up onto the $65 plan. Took almost 1.5 hours as there was a big wait with the JB call centre that’s processing the order. Was late for my daughters swimming class so rushed through.

Eventually all signed up but was told that “Gift card will be provided after activation is completed and was told this could be 5 min to 12 hours, so come back to pick up the card next day”. When I asked for paper work, was told that they don’t provide any and “just come back and ask for store manager tomorrow”. I went with it as I was running very late.

30 mins later, Activation completed. BUT critical information summary showed as $45 plan and instead of $65!

So now I am without my gift card and on the wrong plan. Looking forward to my visit to the store tomorrow! NOT!

    • I also couldn't get my gift card today but they're going to call me when it's ready to pick up (I think the long weekend is causing issues). They did put me on the right plan though. I hope yours gets sorted.

  • +2

They're on to us, guys. I think the $49 plan switch and the port-in discount are over. Relevant snippet from the chat:

Me: I just ported to Telstra this morning but didn't realise there was a 60GB for $49 plan. Any chance I can change plans please?

Telstra CS: You signed up for JB Hi-Fi Mobile BYO Plan for $65 per month. This is actually a special offer only available at JB Hi-Fi stores. Our Mobile BYO $69 with $20 discount is only available for new service only. Meaning, no service added yet. Or if second mobile service will be added.

Me: Ok, thanks anyway :) I've was told I would be able to ask you guys for a $10 port in discount, would that be possible?

Telstra CS: Oh, I see. JB Hi-fi should left a note on your account about this discount as we don't offer it. My apologies.
Their offers as well as our offer, are both different. If you signed up directly with us, you'll get $20 discount, making it $49 per month only. Then, if you signed up with them you'll get $200 gift certficate with them.

Me: Bugger about the port in discount, weird and unsatisfying. Especially considering I've heard people talk about getting it recently :( Thanks anyway

Telstra CS: I'm sorry. As much as I would love to do it for you, we received a lot of reports about this false offers.

I ended up switching to the $49 15GB plan, I don't use that much data anyway. Still overall happy with the outcome, the gift certificate is worth it :)

    • crap!

    • So still switched over the the $49 with 15gigs… ill still be happy with that

    • Try again. Took me about 5-6 attempts. One of which was a 2hr chat where they pulled me up about enquiring about it 2 weeks ago using a different name. Looks like they log in your IP address too.

      • “One of which was a 2hr chat where they pulled me up about enquiring about it 2 weeks ago using a different name” 😂

    • +1

Was there any penalty switching from a more expensive $65 plan to a cheaper $49 plan? When I signed up today in JB, the salesperson also told me it was an "false offer" but she would grant it to me anyway

      • No penalty, apart from the loss of data allowance.

    • Signed up two plans today, one for myself and one for my girlfriend. I've chatted on live chat for mine and managed to convince them to change over. Trying for my girlfriend's plan and the agent and their supervisor kept refusing. Trying again now.

      • How'd you go in the end?

      • I know hindsight is 20/20, but maybe you could have tagged your GF's change of plan to the same agent and convo you had for yours…

        • That is true. I didn't think there would be any problem since there were so many success stories earlier. Also not sure about chatting another account on my account.
