There must be a limited list of what phones otherwise I have a working iphone 5 that I can part ways with for a new Pixel 3 =P

    • +14

no limited list when this was happening a few weeks ago.
i know someone who bought a $20 coles phone and traded it in for the 350 off a pixel

      • +1

Seems to be a similar deal to this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/450087

Cheeky JB, essentially you're selling your phone for the extra $50 (or more if they deem it to be valuable)

      • +2

I traded a 12yo BlackBerry 8100 on a Pixel 3a with no problems in the last deal with no dramas. If it's not on their list they have a procedure to override. Same as if it's on their list but not worth $100 to bump up the trade value.

        • +3

Same, traded in my Lumia 520 from years ago…as long as it's considered 'smart' phone, they will take it.

          • @jezza p: Would a Nokia N9 be considered a smart phone?

It has an internet browser, gorgeous Symbian OS, just no touch screen…. :(

            • @klownz: Worth a shot! I can’t see why not. if they say no, insist that it says any smart phone in working order. If a windows phone works, I can’t see why wouldn’t Symbian. Haha

      • so ive got a ZTE F286 phone laying around… Would you think this is considered as a 'smartphone'?

      • Do you know what phone was it that cost $20? Thanks.

    • I traded in a 5 last week, no issues at all. They didn't even test it, although that depends on the store apparently.

    • No limit as long as it turns on. I traded in a Samsung Galaxy Nexus I had lying around in a drawer at home. They don't seem to care as they get recycled for metals it seems

      • -2

No way, I got iPhone 3g back 12 years ago.

Edit: I read it wrong, it's 350 off, not $350 as the price. For pixel 3 it is $850, so not quite worth it, imo.

        • +3

They will soon come down to that price point, so it's another sales tactic to get you Money quicker than later.

    • Traded in a near perfect iPhone 2nd Gen.

  • what are the prices of each phone?

  • +26

This really should be the standard price without having to trade in an old phone. They are nearly a year old, running on two generation old hardware. This is crazy. Only a few months for the new Pixel 4.

    • +8

Pixel 3 is a expensive overpriced phone compare to all other brands/models at the same price range

Don't even get me started on its lack of RAM and they think the only saving grace is its camera software, which is already ported to many other phones via GCam. Sure other phones can't use the full software capabilities but its not worth the price difference

LG V40 or Oneplus 6T much better phone than this.

      • +3

The Samsung S10 has current gen hardware, and overall has better features, battery life and styling.

And that's now priced between $800-$950.
So if anything, the 3/3XL has to several hundred dollars cheaper.

So we're talking about $700 for the Pixel 3 (128GB), and about $900 for the Pixel 3XL (128GB). So definitely Google is overcharging by $500 - $800, and trying to rip-off the Aussies.

        • +2

Its the Aussie tax. It was the same for Huawei. Just look at how they are dropping like flies

        • +1

Even if the Pixel 3/XL was cheaper than the S10/+, I'd go with the S10 any day

    • I agree. That's what I'm saying too. The trade in is just a marketing pitch. As if they get any money for them…

  • And that will bring the price of Pixel 3/XL to…….

  • -6

Goggle phones are now asking for top dollars without discount. Cheapest I saw on Jb was over $600 and it goes up to $1350.
Just read a few peoples comment on Goggle phones and they are not the best. Most people are having problems with their phone from day one.

    • +1

If you google any phone model + issues you'll get results. My Google phones have been working fine since Nexus One. First to get OS Updates, no bloated software.
Yes they are more expensive now as Google is trying to compete with Apple and Samsung but can't always win.

      • Not really, even reviewers point out how unreliable the pixels are. The problem with being the first to get updates, is you are literally the guinea pig. I have and will be a nexus/pixel user, but I'm not blind either. Google just like to test new services on pixels, they don't really care about maintenance. I had 7 RMA's in total for my own pixels from OG XL to 3XL, and my wife is on her 3rd now. I wouldn't have minded if they were cheap phones. Given also many major features that are pixel only are limited to the US, and many other basic features break after updates. Now playing was broken for nearly 4 months after an update on P2XL's as an example. Keep in mind your definition of no bloat, means that it lacks basic features of other devices. Bloat these days = features, and doesn't slow phones down either. If anything only having 4gb ram etc has more of an impact than "bloat". I know not everyone is having issues, but believe me when I say the pixels issues are more widespread and lacking prompt fixes than phones of the same price.

I love pixels, but after 3 generations I have decided to use them for dev phones instead of my daily driver, which is what I believe they are designed for.

        • I guess I have good luck. Never had any issues really. Even my Nexus 5x is still working. Though I have seen the pixel 2xl pink tint issue though I never got the XL range, maybe that's why.

          • @bogak: For sure not all pixels, probably not even half of pixels. Many people have issues with their phones but perhaps aren't super picky etc and may not notice them. The things I had to deal with were mic not working, speaker rattling, bluetooth not working, reboot of death, pink screen even front on, phone would hangup calls randomly, phone USB port broke, USB port would break any headphone adaptor connected to it, wouldn't charge. Etc etc.

        • Fair enough. I've been on pixel 1 xl for 4 years without issue.

How would you rate Google's service through the 7 RMAs you had?

          • @buckster: From when I reported the issue, I had to organise a pickup date for a courier to pick up the phone. I had to put it in a box and I was solely responsible for the packing. It then took 2-3 days to get sent to Hong Kong, of which then a further week to be processed. Once they process it, they send the refurb unit out which takes another 2-3 days. Best experience was almost 2 weeks, and worst experience was 3.5 weeks. Compare this to when I got a dude work phone (iPhone), of which I booked a time to visit, walked in and within 5 mins got a replacement device.

I also know some people at work who still have pixels without issues. At no point am I saying all pixels have issues, just saying in my experience and observations, it seems it's a much higher failure rate than others. My last RMA was done through JBHiFi, of which I walked up to the phone guy and said I was looking at returning a broken phone, without showing him or saying anything further he asked if it was a Google Pixel - because they had so many customers returning them with issues.

            • @onlinepred: Where'd you buy the phone from to need to send it to hong kong? Did you get a grey import?

  • +3

even without the trading hassle, $350 off RRP is not enough with all the new phone keep coming out, even google admits its google pixel 3 sales is not good,
as per quote "Google CEO Ruth Porat says the company sold fewer Pixel phones due to industry-wide pressure on high-end phones"

    • Exactly, they will have to drop further to entice people to buy but these phones are plague with problems. Who wants to touch them if they don't support customers who bought a faulty phone.

      • Google replaced a phone I bought used that was 3 days out of warranty, and gave me an upgrade. When my son's Samsung wouldn't unlock with the unlock code provided by Optus, and by samkey, Samsung told me to go jump.

        • But will google help if it's purchased from JB hi-fi?

          • @AussieMark: No idea sorry, I've only ever bought them straight from Google before.

          • +1

@AussieMark: Yes, my Pixel (from JB) had problems, so I discussed on live chat, and they sent a new (I assume refurbished) one to me.

    • +6

      Ruth Porat is Google CFO.

How can you quote something and get the quote wrong?

  • +3

I love the Pixels functionality and camera but there are quite a few quality issues across them. For this I don't think the high price is justified and I'd be concerned buying outright.

I'd go for the 3a out of these, others are not worth the price compared to S10/One Plus 7.

    • Agreed with the above, probably best to wait for Pixel 4, its not far away, 4 months to go.

      • To be fair though, they haven't released a pixel without issues yet. And if they do, they seem to remedy that with broken updates now and then. I hope with Pixel 4 I am proved wrong though.

      • +3

best to wait for Pixel 4, its not far away, 4 months to go.

at a price point of $1,500 AUD.

        • Love you long time Tempura, yum yum!

  • Are there any dual sim models?

    • I believe they're dual SIM / eSIM. Not two physical SIMs.

      • +1

No, no dual sim capability because it comes with single IMEI. So you can use either physical sim or esim one at a time. At this stage to my knowledge, esim can be used with GoogleFi in the states or some esim carrier like Flexiroam.

  • I think I read that Pixels have a 2 year AU warranty, is that correct?

    • Yes that's right.

    • +1

All Australian stock carry a 2 yr cover

  • +3

This can be stacked with JB Hifi's Telstra offers btw.

I got my 3a for $139 after a $400 gift voucher, $100 trade in and some weird $10 Telco credit that popped up on the receipt.

    • +1

How did you get a $400 voucher? Did you signup for 2 Sim only plans?
Edit: You signed up on $65 plan($300 credit)…sorry was focussed on $45 plan ($200 credit)

      • Sorry the $400 deal was only temporary and has since expired.
        It's $300 now indeed.

  • This is weird deal… I bought 2 pixel 3 total $700 off in february from jb-hifi and now you have to throw in a working phone for that?

    • Google pays JB Hi Fi for the trade-in, so technically it's a different deal. I assume JB Hi Fi carried the loss themselves for the February deal.

  • Pixel 3 is overpriced

  • So if you sign up for a $65 Telstra plan with JB and get $500 credit plus the trade in of $350 you could essential buy a Pixel 3 64 Gb for $349?

    • I was just going to ask if the Telstra port-in deal could be combined with this one… so maybe start somewhere like here and then trade in your old phone, using the $500 credit from the other deal the pay part of the outstanding trade-in balance? If so, that’s potentially $850 off one of these phones.

      • But you're locked in for a two year plan…

  • Smashed Screen LG G6 considered a working phone? Screen still works..

    • +1

They checked mine for chips/cracks and a host of other physical problems before accepting, so unlikely yours will pass.

  • I have a xiaomi note 3 which still works but the battery has expanded so much that the case cover has wedged out. Would they take it? :D

    • +1

Just don't say anything pretend you don't know, that's how things will work. It doesn't matter you can give them the worse spec smartphone to trade in.

  • I got the Pixel 3 for the last trade-in deal at $599. It replaced the Huawei P30 I bought a month earlier (returned it for a full refund in light of the US ban). IMHO, the P30 was a MUCH better phone. I still miss mt P30 :(

    • That's an awesome price for the pixel 3.

      • +1

I guess it is. But honestly, it should should actually be priced at $599. $1199 is just atrocious for this quite basic phone. Can wait to get the OnePlus 7 at a good price so that I can give the Pixel to my partner :D

        • +1

I agree, its a good price but I probably would not consider pixel 3 if its priced above that. It has a mediocre hardware, some software quality issues, poor battery life, etc. The only things that make pixel 3 shines from other phones is the camera software, but then again with only 1 camera it doesn't have wide angle lens or optical zoom like other flagship phone have.

    • really? u can return it for full refund? was it JBhifi? no issues at all? also was the p30 deal part of the jbhifi 12 month plan?

      • +2

Na i got it on Amazon. I requested a refund the day the day the news came out and I was still within the return period window. Good thing is, got a Sonos One speaker for free from the Huawei Promotion :)

        • +3

          You just won ozbargain…

    • +1

..wow u reacted way too fast…

      • I dread buyers remorse. So returned the phone while i had the chance to avoid an potential losses.

  • Those amounts are minimum. Is there a list of trade in values for the popular phones? Like a S8 or pixel 2 or whatever?

  • +1

I managed to get it for $199 after Telstra $65pm for 12 months with $400 GC, $350 trade-in and price matched at HN

    • What did you price match from HN?

      • $949 for pixel 3 last weeks deal

        • Thanks. So no longer available?

  • Pixel 4a/4aXL will be out around October

    • +1

3a/3a XL just released. Do you really think they release the 4a this year?

Ah that's the release date for the full Pixel 4/4 XL

  • same as before?

  • Wonder what the levels are up to maximum are since it says minimum. Did they have a list last time?

  • Any dual Sim variant?

  • Hmm maybe I should trade in a 1 week old galaxy A20 for $100 off the pixel 3A

  • -1

i offer $800 for the pixel 3 xl , otherwise I'll just buy the pixel 4 xl

    • Surely you could afford the asking price, Mr Billions?

      • Yes, but my willingness to pay is low when a new phone is around the corner.

  • this is not trade in discount, you should call it recycle your unwanted phone for discount, you can buy it somewhere else for discount price.

  • Trade in a Lumia 530 or Moto G2 ? Both working and unlocked.

  • -1

    Huawei all the way!

  • Is the pixel 3a xl or pixel 2 xl faster?

    • 2XL. Faster CPU.

  • Traded my htc one for the Pixel 3 with their best price made it $750.
