[eBay Plus] Google Home Hub $126.65 + Shipping (or Free Pickup) @ The Good Guys eBay

1020
PAPPY

Just received a notification from eBay that The Good Guys dropped the price on their Google Home Hubs from their rip-off price of $199 to $149.

With the eBay Plus 15% discount, this makes it even cheaper than the Google Home Hub I posted before Update: Price drop just happened on Frugal Shop, now the prices are about the same from either the Good Guys or Frugal Store.

Another new addition to their store is the Lenovo Smart clock which sells for $109.65, with a 4 inch screen. It's too small for the living room or kitchen, but it might be good for the nightstand where the screen's brightness won't disturb your sleep. (It's also too damn expensive)

  • Awesome price.

  • Isn't the Lenovo version better since it has a camera?

    • +4

To some people, that might be the exact reason the Home Hub is better.

      • +4

The Lenovo has a physical shutter to cover the camera when not needed. Fear of privacy breach would not be a concern.

        • Their reasoning

“We consciously did not put a camera on Hub so that it was comfortable to use in the private spaces of your home, like your bedroom,” Google VP Diya Jolly said onstage earlier this week.

          • +1

@pennypincher98: perhaps we want to be recorded in the bedroom!!!

          • +5

            @pennypincher98:

“We consciously did not put a camera on Hub so that it was comfortable to use in the private spaces of your home, like your bedroom,” Google VP Diya Jolly said onstage earlier this week.

Translation: "We already scrape every bit of data out of your home, and putting a camera on our Hub makes this fact a little too obvious, so we decided not to do that. You know, business…"

            • +1

@sarasani: Basically (which applies to anyone):
We've already got all the data we need from your phone.

I appreciate the gesture of not including a camera on there, but when I think about it I'm essentially staring into a camera whenever I'm on my phone.

      • +2

It has a physical shutter to close the camera. So no, it ain't a selling point

      • The home hub is better for the bedroom (with a better ambient light sensor)

The Lenovo is great for the living area / kitchen…. better sound and screen + camera.

  • Hi mod, you forgot the promo code.

  • +3

You have to be really into the Google eco-system for this, I guess and I don't even own any Apple devices..or maybe I just don't check the weather and traffic often enough to see the value in this.

Good deal nonetheless(and the cheapest so far, if I'm not wrong).

    • you can voice play youtube video music songs without paying for any music subscription

  • What do people use this for?

    • +8

I use it to control smart home devices. You'll need a bit of creativity to get full use out of Google Assistant. It's usefulness is extended by the number of "works with google" appliances in your home.

Of course you don't really need a Home Hub if your phone is on you at all times, it's just that the home hub is also loudspeaker and a control panel handy for you to toggle switches remotely and/or view cameras remotely.

the cheapest smart bulbs I found are usually around $15~19 dollars. That's usually the Xiaomi Yeelights, and the Mirabella lights from Kmart. Smart plugs are also around $20 and I use them to control heaters, fans and floor lamps.

Second this comment. I have the JBL Link View.

I use mine as a photo display primarily but also as smart home control. When cooking I yell out when my hands are full to set timers. And use Routines in Google Home app, so I say that I'm home and the plug turns on my TV, soundbar and light strip on the back of the TV.

Same with the lights and light strip, can yell out to whatever colour I want and it comes on. Have a mix of white and coloured LED bulbs. Also when I say I'm leaving it turns on my Xiaomi home security camera.

I've also got a Kogan heater and can turn that on and off too via voice / Routines but their implementation is wonky still, so trying to work it out with their support desk on fixing that up so it works mint.

Other folks have said to me it's all a gimmick , and when I first bought this stuff I thought the same too. But when you have nagging kids screaming at you and having to tend to younger kids as well with their things, you find it's quite handy to yell out Good Night and everything just gets handled by Google (cos I'm just plain exhausted by the end of the day)

        • +1

Yeah, my wife thought the mini was a waste, till she saw me stream a kids show to the living room tv as I was cooking. Then put 3 timers on.

If you don't have any Google assistant enabled devices, there's little point. The timers, weather, time, etc are cool, but not worth it on their own.

        • How can found out what kind of products from Xiaomi's ecosystem are compatible with alex, google or siri?

    • +2

Makes it easier for them to share their personal data with marketing companies.

    • Sending every single piece of data possible to Google in order that people can pay Google to have access to my data.

eg. I am shopping for health insurance.

By paying Google, who combines it's own dataset with every other data set that it can purchase about you, my prospective health insurer can predict the likelihood of me developing illnesses and adjust the quotes it gives me accordingly.

Just kidding, who would want to be that idiot.

    • Use it in the kitchen; as a timer, picture album (default), recipe book, phone book (show me the number for …) and music (spotify).

  • Great deal - picked one up. I use it to cast music to my stereo via voice commands, and will put in kitchen to lookup recipes etc. I plan to upgrade my downlights to smart lights too when they become cheaper - and it will be able to control those :)

  • can any one tell me what is different b/w Google Home Hub and android tablet? if I install google assistant on tablet, can it works like Google Home Hub?

  • Seems like a great unit the big drawback for me is no browser, which rather limits looking up recipes which may be on websites and not the provided apps.

    Hi CIA, I'm home

    • +5

      They already know!

    • +1

      Hi home, I'm CIA

  • Anybody know if the lenovo smart clock can be set to go dark unless touched / called?

  • I am a little disappointed with Home Hub, as no camera (yeah I know, but having one I think more useful if camera included) also news is just 3 videos, would of preferred scrolling with a number of news stories.

With the new 4 inch screen smart clock from lenovo for $80 (currently $100 apparently, but I bet will fall in price) or so I think that would be better value.

I don't use commands either so not a huge usage for me.

    • +2

The Home Hub is a bit disappointing. It seems to have worse audio quality than the Home Mini's.

I can see why Google are dropping the price… because of the new Amazon Echo Show 5 coming out at $129. I'll be curious to see what the audio quality on that will be like (and there is a camera which you can toggle on/off for privacy).

  • Does the tax invoice show the original price? or the discounted price?

  • 2.4G wireless only?? Hell naw.

TGG site is wrong - it has 2.4 and 5Ghz wireless

    https://support.google.com/googlehome/answer/7072284?hl=en-A…

Called a Nest Hub on that site but the OW specs confirm.

  • +1

Wait for the Google Nest Hub Max thats coming out in the next 3 months.

  • Big Pappy

  • Would have loved to gotten my hands on the Lenovo one but missed the deal last week. Same price.

  • Thanks OP. Bit the bullet. Was debating hard over whether to get the Home or spend the extra on the Hub and the Hub won out.

It'll sit next to a TV with a Chromecast plugged into a N950 Soundbar so the screen won out over the speaker quality.

  • price has gone up on good Guys, and coupon is expired on Frugal Shop.
Pity. I missed out because I couldn't do click and collect. Sad panda.

    • It's still available.

PAPPY coupon expires midnight. Do note that you'll need eBay Plus to get 15%.

    • Thought the advertised price finishes today/tonight 3/6

    • I just got one about 3 hours ago. Frugal Shop still have it for $146 and PAPPY ends at midnight. I think the Good Buys price just ended at 5:31PM.
