  • I read somewhere the difference between v2 & v1 is like day & night. Do you own a v2 for comparison?

    • +1

I have v1. V2 has 1080P; v1 only 720p. I am happy with 720p. Higher res require higher bandwidth as well. Also v2 has swap able battery as well, it is more expensive though.

      • can you post a some pics of the V1 and V2 so I can see how the resolution pics compare?
also some nightshot pics as well if you can.

In general it is better to get highest resolution camera you can get, which allows better facial identification etc if you ever get burgle.

I got a xiaomi xiaofang which does 1080p, but I now want a 4k one.

        • Got a Xiaofang here too, but the recent firmware update to 5.6.2.197 bricked it. Can't use outside Mainland China. Sad.

          • @fyeahm: I never updated mine cos I read fanghacks don't work above a certain fw.

Also it is always risky to update fw on these devices which never had international support in the first place.

            why did you update yours?
when you try to connect, it just shows offline or what?
what replacement camera are you gonna get?

there's a few 4k cams coming out already/soon but they are expensive and not from xiaomi.
when xiaomi releases one it should be more affordable.

You can answer your door anywhere with your phone, can see and talk in real time but if you want to retrieve any recorded video clips you need to pay $40 per year.

  • It's this a VoIP video phone so you can answer your front door from anywhere?

    edit

    Looks like it is.

    • +1

Yep, but you'll need to pay $4 per month on top of purchase price to record the video to their cloud service. No local recording… because that would be too convenient and they can't make more money off you.

Terrible model. If they allowed local recording and embedding into existing CCTV setups, everyone would have one of these.

Was a sale around $79-$99 for version 1 a few years ago if I remember correctly.
Already shared my experience with Ring doorbell 1 & 2.
To keep it short, 1st unit was great, worked like a charm. Then suddenly had issues with humidity damage (inside camera lens). Replacement after replacement was a total nightmare (wifi connection etc).
Decided to try V2 as it was on sale, same problem a nightmare of replacements and troubleshooting.

I’m sure there are some happy customers out there with good units (like our first one before the humidity).
It seems there are issues with quality though.

    • This is my third one, no problem so far. You need good wifi at location where you place the door bell ( I have 3 Google WiFi Mesh which give me good coverage).

      • So now wondering… why do you have 3? Do you have 3 properties? or maybe the first 2 had issues? … other?

        • 1 front door, 1 back door, 1 at the garage….. but I only pay subscription for the front door camera.

          • @TheMatrix: Wow! sounds like you've got it all covered!
Definitely a proponent of the Ring' system hey!
Someone else said they are paying $40/month for cloud storage option but I'd heard from another person recently that they pay $30/month…

            may I ask…?

            • @[Deactivated]: I pay $40 per YEAR for one camera.

              • @TheMatrix: Not bad for peace of mind. (meant to say per year lol)

      • The first unit we bought had no issues with wifi whatsoever, was a solid unit.
Then the replacements all had issues in the exact same setup and location. We even bought a decent wifi-extender and put it closest as possible to the doorbell (back then mesh WiFi systems were a new thing), still had issues.
All the time & effort put into troubleshooting was what left a bad taste with us, especially when the 1st unit worked perfectly (except for the humidity entering).

    Dont buy this one
its terrible breaks down all the time flacky connections
    Battery failures

I got rid of it and replaced it with the Pro much more reliable

    • I have two pros (one on each house) and two spotlight cams now.

  • Only runs on 2.4ghz WiFi FYI
