What's the deal with the price of a SIM in a SIM + data plan on this page gradually growing more and more expensive compared to the data only equivalents?
    https://callcloud.com.au/collections/early-bird-local-data-p…

Data Data only SIM + data Difference
    1 GB 5.1 13.5 8.4
    3 GB 7.5 17.5 10
    5 GB 9.9 21.5 11.6
    7 GB 11.10 23.5 12.4
    10 GB 13.8 28 14.2
    • Hi Veetor,

Looks like we had some errors on that page! Thanks for pointing them out. All fixed now.

The format should be Data + $5 for (microchip or SIM) & + $20 for eSIM.

It is easiest to buy your data directly from Flexiroam within their App, hence why we are running the Starter Kit special.

The plans we have on our site are to enable customers an idea of the data pricing before they buy a SIM.

If your buy a SIM we'll throw in a gift for spotting our error.

      Thanks again.

Thanks for clearing that up. I went ahead and ordered one - #1029.

  • How do you guys differ from buying direct?

    • Hi Henrus,

We offer quicker, cheaper delivery and we often have unique offers exclusively available to CallCloud customers only.

We also provide an additional layer of (local) support if you are having difficulties.

Otherwise it is exactly the same.

      Cheers,

      CallCloud

  • I guess good for those who still haven’t got any roaming data in their postpaid account…

  • Does your SIM tunnel through the GFW for China?

    • Hi lolcoaster,

I haven't used Flexiroam personally in China, but am reliably informed that YES it does. Apparently, most Travel SIMs do though, I don't think that's unique to us.

      I hope that helps.

      Cheers.

    • Did you manage to use it? Looking at purchasing one too

Can I mobile hotspot with flexiroam x?

    • +1

      Hi frogduck,

Yes you can hotspot or tether with with Flexiroam X.

However that is 'olskool. There is a way better feature called 'Flexishare'.

This enables you to 'share' your data plan with others using the Flexiroam X App.

This means you can take advantage of better value 10GB plans and then share 1, 2, 3… 5GB with the wife without tethering.

She can be across the other side of Paris at some gallery or museum, and you can be happily watching your footy in the pub!

      Its awesome!

      Cheers,

      CallCloud

      • Thanks for the info! Do they need the flexiroam sim too? Or can they somehow access the sharing without that?

      • Hi @callcloud if I want to utilise 'Flexishare' with my wife, do I need to purchase 2 of the starter kits?

Can you also clarify which SIM type I should be looking to purchase? I have an iPhone XS and my wife has a iPhone X. Do I go eSIM for myself and either microchip or 3in1 SIM for my wife?

        Thanks

  • I've looked on your site, where can I find pricing for the all of Asia plan?

    • +1

      Hi DealmeIn,

Unfortunately Flexiroam don't have a whole of Asia Plan.

They have a Jakota Triangle (Japan, Korea, Taiwan) & Greater China (China, HK, Macau).

The idea is that you would purchase individual country Data Plans as it works out much cheaper.

I've done the exercise comparing Flexiroam's Europe Plan to individual European countries and this is also the case.

There also are the Global Data Plans that cover approx 160 countries worldwide, but they are MUCH more expensive.

      I hope this helps.

      Regards,

      CallCloud

  • I read that not all countries support eSIM. I’ve a Google Pixel 3 - if I get an eSIM:
    1) will the eSIM work for South America (Chile/Bolivia/Peru/Brazil/Argentina)?
    2) will the eSIM work for Japan and Taiwan?

    • Hi Munnie,

This is a common question we are asked. Yes our eSIM works wherever we have coverage.

Apple & Google show the carriers who offer eSIM in each country, but we along with Gigsky and Truphone offer Global eSIMs.

      I hope this helps.

Holy crap way cheaper to just buy a sim in America.

    • +2

      Hi bunnybash,

I'm sure there are 'cheaper' offers available, but it all depends on your needs and the price you place on convenience.

Personally, I value being able to text everyone back home the moment I land after a long flight.
While I'm waiting in the customs line I add value by checking maps, hotel & traffic.
As I collect my luggage I book my uber.

Good luck finding your Uber driver @ LAX without a 4G connection, WiFi just doesn't cut it!

Also, our SIMs work for your next trip to Egypt, Japan or wherever else you choose to go!

Thanks for the feedback though, we'd be keen to know what you think is the best SIM deal in the USA?

      Cheers,

Haven't you seen the signs that tell you not to use your phone?

        • Hahaa yes good point.

Although it's hard to read signs when you are looking at your phone!

Did you know its also illegal to use paywave at Drive Thru's?

For the record, I do respect the seatbelt to stay secured rule (and wear it when in flight) because I do believe in safety.

I suspect the no phones in customs hall rule is more about drugs or terrorism?

Did you know its also illegal to use paywave at Drive Thru's?

I didn't, but I don't use the drive through. I like to get some exercise before and after indulging on fast food. 25 steps each way should burn off the food.

I suspect the no phones in customs hall rule is more about drugs or terrorism?

            I think so.
And probably also so you can't take photos of the uniformed or undercover border agents.

  • Am I correct that the microchip option is for a "single-use"? I meant it is attached to a particular sim card and if you use a new sim (on porting your number out to another carrier), you will need another microchip?

    • +1

      Hi Gleung,

Yes, you will need a new microchip if you change carriers and Flexiroam will replace the microchip free of charge "at their discretion". This essentially means they are happy to as long as you aren't abusing the system ordering new SIMs all the time!

Typically most people don't change providers all that often, and even if they do (and don't want a replacement) they can use the old SIM as Travel SIM.

Of course we're expecting most new handsets purchased by Aussies will be eSIM enabled, so they will most likely use Telstra/Optus/Vodafone as their primary SIM & use our eSIM in 'data only' mode as secondary.

We've had a few customers remove microchips before and have them work successfully on another SIM Card, but we wouldn't advise trying this.

I hope this helps. If you need anything else, please let us know.

  • Hi Op,

I'd like to get the 3GB 24Day Japan starter pack plus an additional SIM.

What would be the best value noting the clickfrenzy and 20% off data plans (8DDVJ7) offer?

    Thanks!

    • +1

      Hi Bob,

      The 20% off code: 8DDVJ7

Is available for data purchases made in the Flexiroam X App with an activated SIM/microchip/eSIM purchased from CallCloud only. It will work for one purchase.

The best value will be for you to buy the SIMs separately and then purchase the data with the above (20% Off) discount code.

The only caveat to the above is if you are near one of the cutoff dates for the standard advance purchase discount.

Flexiroam Local Plans (Japan) are discounted 50% for 30+ days in advance & 70% for 90+ day advance purchases.

If you are leaving in say 95 days, you might be cutting in fine.

I hope this makes sense. Download the App and you will be able to play with the different plan options.

Finally, if you are travelling with a partner/family or have 2 devices you can share the plan you purchase, rather than say buying 2 x 3GB for each SIM.

      Regards,

      CallCloud

      • +1

        Excellent response. Thanks CallCloud.

One more question re: activation - Can I specify a date when I'd like my SIM activated for use or is it specified by choosing the 'days in advance'?

Also, are all the prices in USD? As it's an Australian website…

        • Hi Bob,

          No worries & our pleasure.

In the app you'll specify a start date for the Data Plan at the time of purchase. As mentioned in another reply, you can refund this plan if your trip is cancelled.

The above isn't technically the 'activation' of the Flexiroam X account per se, but I think it is what you are wanting to know.

The activation of the Flexiroam X account is only relevant from the perspective that the validity 'clock' of the 100MB of Global Data included with the Starter Kit begins from this point. (It's 365 days and 100MB won't get you too far anyway).

Another little tip. That 100MB is precious because it works in some really unusual countries & it has the ability to provide you with outbound calling (even using your normal mobile Caller ID).

This can be handy in an emergency. (Trying to contact an AirBnB host, after you miss your flight, etc).

This feature is available only on the more expensive Global Data Plans and is billed at 10MB/min

          I hope this helps.

          Regards,

          CallCloud

  • How exactly does this work? Lets assume I buy this https://callcloud.com.au/collections/early-bird-local-data-p…

A 24 day, 10GB plan for use in China for more than 90 days in the future. Does the plan automatically activate on a day I specify, or does it detect the sim joining the network in China and activate? Can I buy two of these "at the same time" for effectively 20GB, or would I need two sims?

  • +1

    Hi Cronium,

Yes, you specify the start date of the plan and it commences at 00:00 local time.

You can buy as many of these plans as you wish with the single account (or SIM).

Another cool thing that I have discovered (and had confirmed by Flexiroam) is that if you purchase a Local Data Plan in advance you can refund the purchase at anytime prior to either a) the plan commencing, or you sharing data from the plan to another user.

This enables you to secure the hefty 90+ day Early Bird discount without worrying about trip cancellations etc.

I wish you could do this with low cost flights!!!

Also, if you were overlapping plans: EG Greater China Plan (inc. HK/Macau) & another China Local Plan the data would be consumed in the following order:

In some cases this will mean an overlap. In this instance, data will be consumed in the following order:

    1. Destination

    2. Start Date

    3. Earliest Expiry Date

As with the previous poster, for best value you should purchase your starter Kit from us and buy data in App (with our discount code).

    I hope this all helps!

    Regards,

    CallCloud

  • Hi James, this looks interesting!

Under South America on the "Global Coverage" page (https://callcloud.com.au/pages/coverage), there are a few countries listed which aren't listed on the Americas Data Plan - for example, Aruba, Bolivia, Bonaire. Does this mean those countries are only available with the Global Data Plan?

    • Hi Zadax,

Unfortunately yes. In fact Brazil & Peru were only recently included in the Americas Plan.

The more exotic countries tend to be very expensive. We may add more countries into the plan in future, but I doubt the ones you mentioned will be included.

The best you'll do is our 20% off Global Data at the moment, though Flexiroam sometimes run buy 1 get 1 free offers for Global Data in the App.

      I hope this helps.

      Regards,

      CallCloud

  • Got 4 Sims as I wasn't quite sure how "esim" works.
The wife and I both have the latest iphone xs and I understood that the esim works on our iphones.
Guess I cant go too wrong having to change sims around and giving a couple to family.
Just one thing, If I activate just the one sim, If i understood it correctly, can the wife share the data or buy some data separately by using the Flexi app or do we just activate both sims ?

    Thank you.

    • +1

      Hi Steve,

If you are lucky enough to be the owner of the new iPhone XS I'd highly recommend the eSIM, it really is the ultimate form of Travel SIM. I can amend your order before we send it out today, just let us know.

In order for you to share your data plan, your wife (or anyone else you wish to share your data with) must have have an activated Flexiroam X Account. It doesn't matter is they are using eSIM/SIM/microchip, but they do need one.

I hope this helps, let us know what you want us to do with your order.

      Regards,

      CallCloud

        Hi mate,

Thanks for the reply and advice.

If its not too late, I would be happy for you to amend my order if its still ok?

So if you think I should change it to 2x eSIM and leave the other 2 a sim only ?

I am grateful for your help/advice and great service.

Apologies for writing here as I thought to get in touch with you directly.

        Thank you.
        Steve

  • If I'm using the microchip option on one of 2 SIM's in a dual SIM phone, does that effectively give me 3 SIMs?

I have a work SIM and a personal SIM in my phone. I'd like to have decent data when travelling OS via the Flexiroam microchip but still be able to receive calls to both my work and personal numbers.

Is this possible or am I dreaming?

Ordered a normal SIM and a microchip in any case.

    • +1

      Hi Banggunley,

Great question, gotta love the OzBargain community throwing up all the curly ones!

Technically, the answer to your question is yes, in that it would give you 3 SIMs however:

We don't recommend sticking a microchip onto a dual SIM phone (we recommend the standard SIM for dual SIM phones)

Even if it did work, it wouldn't give simultaneous access to all 3 SIMs at once. The Flexiroam dual SIM functionality is enabled via the App and switches between SIMs.

Most true dual SIM phones (and now eSIMs) have dual SIM dual standby or dual SIM dual active, which I'm gathering is what you are after.

The best suggestion I can make for your personal number is to obtain a virtual number to forward your calls to via any number of Apps that are out there. One that is FREE is called TextNow, and it will give you a USA or Canada number for free. (We don't use, sell or endorse this product, just letting you know it's an option).

For your work situation, get them to upgrade their old phone system to a Unification Communications service (UCaaS). This will mean your deskphone can follow you all over the world via a softphone App. This is actually CallCloud's core area of business, alongside consulting around NBN and virtually every business will be switching over to this type of service over the next few years anyway.

Thanks for the great question, we'll probably put up a post on our website, to explain how travellers can achieve access to their phone whilst abroad.

      Cheers,

      CallCloud

      • Thanks for the detailed answer.

I guess I'm being a bit lazy. I can achieve what I want (similar to how you described), we use O365 globally and Skype (soon to be Teams) so my desk phone can indeed folow me anywhere including to my mobile. I can forward my work mobile number to my work landline number and replace my work SIM with your SIM, make that the data SIM and I'll have my desk line and my work mobile ring in Skype on my mobile and my personal mobile number will continue working as normal.

I was just hoping for a more automated way of doing this and to avoid swapping out SIM's each time I head OS.

Ultimately my business should just tie up a decent deal with our mobile provider for data allowance while OS.

Nice to see you have successfully activated your eSIM.

  • Hi op,

I'm trying to figure why I would use this over Woolworths travel SIM as I'm heading to Japan in a week.

Woolworths is $25 for 1GB (30days) including SIM etc.
CallCloud is $25+ (currency exchange rates) for 1GB (24days) inclusind SIM etc.

    ($5USD SIM = $7.27AUD + ($15.30USD DATA = $22.25 AUD x 80% = $18))

    Any thoughts?

    • +1

I think the value is for people who plan their trips ahead and purchase the 90 days in advance rates.

    • +1

      Hi kudoz,

sky blu is correct our best value is obtained by buying in advance. We know that sucks because most people don't think of buying data like a entry visa or a plane ticket or passport.

That said, your comparison isn't accurate.

Woolworths offer a starter kit with 200MB valid for 180 Days for $12
      The 1GB for 30 Days is $25.

      AU $37

Our starter Kit (SIM or microchip or eSIM) includes only 100MB but is valid for 360 Days. $5 USD
Our 'Last Minute' Japan 1GB for 24 Days is $15.30 (less 20% Off) $12.24 USD

      $17.74 USD ~ (@70c/USD)

      AUD $25.34

      Sorry Woolies! ;)

Now not many customers want 1GB. (I know I can get by on 1GB too, but most people want 5GB-10GB)

      Woolies charge $60 for 3GB!!!??

Even with our last minute pricing we SMASH that!

      In addition:
We allow you to share you data with other users (that's share not tether)
We offer inflight WiFi (with Scoot) but more coming soon.
Our Global Plans offer outbound calling with your Home mobile's caller ID
Our microchip & eSIM offer dual SIM functionality.
We cover ~160 countries they cover ~100.

Thanks for the feedback, it always good to hear what's out in the marketplace, but we think we have them covered!

Have a great trip in Japan & if you need anything else, just let us know.

      Cheers,

      CallCloud

  • I've purchased a couple of physical SIM cards from you, looking forward to using them on my trip to Canada. Just wondering if you would be able to tell me which country the data exits through? (I.e., if it is a roaming agreement, where does it VPN back to?)

Wanting to use VoIP, but am worried that latency will be a killer if the data is routed half way around the world and back.

    • Hi mattsbox,

We route through the Jersey Isles. Obviously we have chosen a location we believe will offer the best performance for Aussie travellers. I'm not sure where you are headed to in Canada, but you can see the below expected ping times from Toronto to Paris below as a guide:

      https://wondernetwork.com/pings/Paris/Toronto

Personally, I've used the service on the east and West Coast of the US & even Japan and it has performed really well. Obviously Australia is geographically about as far as you can get from the British Isles so probably not the best to try before you leave (that said I've even placed a reasonable call from NZ!)

Please note that the more expensive Global Data Plans have an outbound calling capability (and this can even present your native caller ID). I don't expect you will be buying this data for use in Canada, but you do get 100MB included with your starter kit.

Calls are billed at 10MB/min which is quite unique (billing data for voice).

What VoIP service will you be using?

I've been looking around and testing some 2nd line Apps recently, and noticed a free one based in Canada (TextNow) they will give you a free local Canadian or US number.

Thanks for your order, we'll get them out to you today.

      Cheers,

      CallCloud

Thanks for this, very insightful! For standard telephone calls I will be using Mynetfone (standard SIP) via the Zoiper app, as well as Optus Loop Live. This will be as well as your usual culprits, such as WhatsApp. This will be from Vancouver, although I will also be using in Spain in late August.
