better to buy second hand cisco switch?

    • Better to send an envelope?

    • +2

yes you can do lot more with a cisco switch, but i find them too noisy for most home office environments

    • +1

To my mind there's a reason they're available secondhand. If it's one from a business it probably means it's been running 24/7 for 3, 5 or more years. And part of the reason they're offloading them after that time is increased likelihood of failure due to age. You'll also find some newer features may be missing. And, if security's your thing, patches/updates might not be released. There's also the possibility that this year's budget switch is as good/fast as a comparable 5 year-old top-of-the-line unit.

  • 8 port unifi POE switch for similar price

    • yeah but dont you need to buy the cloud controller for that to work?

      • the controller is a free download, can run on a windows pc, mac, as a vm, android or ios phones or docker, even a aws version.

        https://www.ui.com/download/unifi/

        • Do you need the controller software running all the time?

          • @YLD1: Not if you just to configure it, if you want monitoring and logs etc then yep
