I will cherish the one cent that I will get in 3 months!

      • Failed to track, as you used an app/browser/internet-connection

  • White or warm white is better to use as backlight for the TV?

  • How could 50cm length is able to fully wrap a tv?

    • +1

You just put in horizontally across the middle of the back of the TV facing the wall.

      • -1

Will a 50cm strip will deliver enough across the back of a large (65"+) TV?

        • No, 2M, and you’ll need to find a better sticker.

        • +3

Disagree with @behrouz, I have a 50cm white LED strip on the back of my 65". Agree you need a better sticker as the heat will peel the standard one. I got 3M adhesive clips and cable tied them to 4 points along the strip.

I found that you want even distance from all edges so if the TV is 80cm high and 144cm wide (a typical 65" TV), you want 40 cm on each side of the length of the strip; assuming you run the strip 40cm from the top. If the TV is 144cm wide, this means you want an 65cm strip (64+40+40=144). 50cm was close enough for me and the light spread looks uniform around all edges from the front.

    • join a couple of them

  • More useful to bling a PC Case maybe. Or to use with a battery as a flexible light source ie car engine bay?

  • Thanks op. These are great for tiny drone racing as well

  • Thanks OP. Got one 500 cms. 1 per account. :-(

  • Silly Question…do these come with the USB connector on the end?

    • Yes

  • -2

These LED would shed some lights into the Julian Assange case.

  • Never tried this before. Ordered one. Hopefully will look good when viewing TV in dark with backlighting.

  • +10

Get the warm white. It's easy on the eye. A more natural light. Cool white is like an obnoxious flouro.

    • -3

Asians love cool white everything. To me it looks like public toilet lighting.

  • Picked up 1 of the cool white. Thanks OP.

  • Anybody ever done some sort of motion sensor project with this.

I am thinking something with a Raspberry Pi or cheap battery powered motion sensor would be great for night time Automatic lighting.

    • You can even use a cheaper Arduino to do that.
      https://learn.adafruit.com/pir-passive-infrared-proximity-mo…

I would setup a separate driver to power the LEDs, since the Arduino can't power a lot of LEDs by itself. You can use a transistor or Mosfet to open/close a separate circuit to turn on the LEDs.

      • What would be the expected cost you reckon?

        • +1

Sensor is like <$2 on ebay, shipped free from china, usually 3-4 weeks at least. Or u can pay $5-$10 and shipped in a week.

          Arduino Uno is like <$10.

Then you need a mosfet (IRF520 $1-$5 for example) to control the power to the LEDs, and some wires, and a battery / power source to power the Arduino and LEDs.

You will need those last things whether you use arduino / raspi / nothing (like dufflover suggested).
If you use nothing and only the PIR sensor, you'll need to control the timings in hardware which is more difficult and not as fun, and less flexible, but it's cheaper.

I would expect every material added up to cost like <$50 , sans tools.

@Blitzfx: Hmm for that price I could just get 3 x Xiaomi Motion Sensor lights that 3 x AA or 3 x AAA (I forget) which would be around $55 AUD delivered roughly.

But I bet this 50cm LED strip would put out more light than those 3 x Xiaomi Motion Sensor Lights at full brightness.. hmm

            • @AlienC: Yeah and you could extend the LED strip to infinite length too and change the color to cool white instead of warm white, which what the xiaomi motion sensor light appeared to be; or to some other random colour.

          • @Blitzfx:

which is more difficult and not as fun, and less flexible, but it's cheaper.

I concede it is definitely guess work and will take a bit of time repetitively testing it turning the potentiometer each time, but if it's for a cupboard or in my case a staircase (not using this deal strip obviously lol) then it's do it once then set and forget.

Given this item will probably take a few weeks from China anyway, better order the PIR now and if you're game enough the MOSFETs too (I got mine from RS Australia to avoid fake standalone semiconductors). Anyway it depends what scale of project you want, if it's a once off thing, and whether you even consider it "fun", or if you're just doing it to save money.

I got a couple of knock-off Xiaomi round lights (3xAAA) and they are great in their own way too.

            • @dufflover:

but if it's for a cupboard

You wouldn't use a PIR when you can use a door switch so they are on while the door is open.

            • @dufflover: If OP orders from RS, that would be a much better way to mess around with this DIY stuff. Occasionally they delivered my parts within 1-2 days depending what it was too.

But I didn't notice RS selling mosfets pre-soldered onto PCBs though like the sellers do on ebay. Maybe I didn't look hard enough.

I'm going to assume OP doesn't have a lot of tools / soldering iron / breadboard etc. available so I just picked the stuff already pre-assembled.

    • How fancy do you need it?
Don't even need an Arduino or other processor to do it. The common PIR SR501 motion sensor has basic timing and trigger adjustments already that you just hook directly up to the transistor.

    • Just get a motion sensor power supply, or a PIR and connect it with your existing power supply.

  • I bought 2 last time, the light quality is great but I had hard time getting it glued to my furniture/stone bench top. I did cut it and rejoined with connectors to give a shape, which didn't work great too. YMMV, but just thought to warn you.

  • -1

Do they come with a plug

  • Can u cut and add another 50cm on

    • I reckon you can, you just need a suitable connector for the type of led strip (2835)

  • Price shows as US $0.59 for cool and US $0.88 for warm for me. How to get US $0.24?

  • +1

coming up with US$0.65 for me?

  • Price has doubled.

  • +2

    Still working for me.
Actually cheaper at US $0.20 (cool) and $0.29 (warm).
New user if that makes any difference

    • Looks like the prices have been updated because it previously wasn't working for me.

  • Too late :(

  • Just bought it at USD0.22

  • +1

    Thanks OP. Still working.

    • Cheers have removed expiry.

  • Coming up as $3 for me.

    • Select white, then 50cm should show AU $0.29 excl. GST.

      • Got it now. Thanks

  • Don't need it but still bought one. Thanks OP

  • Cheaper than bananas

  • Probably some experts in here that have done similar before, so…

I want to fit something like this up under the dash in my car, and under the rear lower edge of the front seats. Something that produces a blue light to match the interior. But not bright like an interior light is. Enough light so everyone can see their feet/floor when driving at night. It has to already be blue when you turn it on, not needs to be switched to blue from another colour. And very low power drain so it can be left on during long night drives.

    • Apart from being the wrong colour, is this what I would use to do that kind of thing?
    • Has anyone done it? Would 1x strip for each person, left to right against the firewall, be enough (particularly in the front)? Or would I need 2 or 3 runs in the other direction - front-to-back - to produce that kind of light?
    • Anything I should be aware of? Like they catch fire, attract cops, etc. LOL?
    • +1

Something that produces a blue light to match the interior.

I wouldn't use blue light, red light is better and doesn't hurt your night vision. That's why BMWs have red lights for night time illumination in the cabin.

It has to already be blue when you turn it on, not needs to be switched to blue from another colour.

You can get RGB ones with a button that changes the colour.
Some seem to remember the colour and others don't, even when they look identical.

Ask the seller to test for you.

And very low power drain so it can be left on during long night drives.

      They will be low power.

The power drain doesn't matter, your car is running so it's making electricity.

Apart from being the wrong colour, is this what I would use to do that kind of thing?

You could use the strip type.
I would use a 12v globe as it will be easier to mount and work directly of the car's electrical system.

Has anyone done it? Would 1x strip for each person

I don't know how bright these are but they are normally 200-300m per metre.
If you used 4 of these I think it would be to bright.

Anything I should be aware of? Like they catch fire, attract cops, etc. LOL?

Blue lights on the outside of your car will get you in trouble with the police. If they are bright enough on the inside you could get in trouble too.

      • Thanks.

        But… I hate red. :-p

        • Borrow a BMW for a night and you might change your mind :-p

Blue light is also good at keeping you awake so of you have a long drive late at night you may find getting to sleep is harder.

          • @spaceflight: That's exactly what I want, LOL - to stay awake while driving. ;-D

            • +1

@GregMonarch: If you need a light just to stay awake while driving you shouldn't be driving

  • Warm white now $0.33 US. Still bought it. Thanks.

  • +1

the ones i used to buy burnt my hands all the time lol

  • Only 50cm and 1 per account.. Meh.

  • Has anyone been able to get 2? I tried making new a new account with different cc, address, phone, name etc. and they still asked for id for "security". Maybe need new IP address?

  • Back to normal price now I suppose

  • got it today. lol it's so short I don't know what I was expecting. Good enough for monitor I suppose.

    • Haha yeh, seems the stated 30cm usb cable constitutes part of the 50cm description - these are only 20cm LED strips (received recently)

      • My LED strip is very close to 50cm and the USB cable is about 1m.

        • Hmm on second-assessment, maybe LED is closer to 40cm, my bad ;( Though I missed the deal, but bought a couple anyway, with a longer multi-colour LED just to make the effort worthwhile…. one day they'll come out of the "drawer of procrastination"

  • How do people actually use this on their tv's? even when the tv is off it turns on 24/7 when plugged in.
