Yamaha A-S301 Stereo Integrated Amplifier (Black) $489, Dali Zensor 3 Speakers (Black) $475 Delivered @ Clefhifi.com.au

Yamaha A-S301 Stereo Amplifier $489 Delivered

This is a simple stereo amplifier only
(with 2 channels)

This was my preference for a stereo amplifier on a budget.
Cheapest I could find at the moment (also cheaper than last deal of $495). RRP $699.
Has Subwoofer-out and Phono-in, and can power 4 ohms speakers using impedance selector.

For those who need more power, for an extra $136 you can get the A-S501 for $615 Delivered which is identical just more power (85w x2 RMS @ 8 ohms).

Yamaha products are known to use Burr-Brown DAC’s (for conversion when using digital inputs), of course there are variations depending which chip they use, do your research if you need to know exactly what Burr-Brown chip is being used.
I also appreciate the ‘pure’ mode which bypasses unnecessary internals for a optional true short path.

Dali Zensor 3 Speakers (Black) $475 Delivered

Some ozbargainers had good things to say about the Zensor 3’s on the Zensor 1’s deal.
Normal price for (Black) seems to be around $649.
RRP $955.
Addictedtoaudio $480 for ‘demo unit only’, only black like this deal (white is $920).
To be fair Addictedtoaudio has a few locations, so you could ask them if they have brand-new for $480.

Currently 3x A-S301’s available here @ $409.20 Delivered with PEACE code.

  • what would be the denon equivalent and price ?

  • and can power 4 ohms speakers using impedance selector.

It is generally best to leave the impedance selector switch in the 8-ohm position.

    https://www.audioholics.com/audio-amplifier/impedance-select…

    • Thanks for sharing. I suppose there is less harmonic distortion & some kind of ‘safety net’ for the amp in the 4 ohms mode though, in case you push the amp too hard. (Warranty issues)

      • From what I've read it's put on some amps and receivers to limit the heat produced into 4-ohm loads in order to pass safety standards in the USA(same standards don't apply in Aus)
Most seem to do this by reducing the rail voltages which reduces the output power, thus inducing harmonic distortion etc at lower output levels.

        • Yeah I’m guessing if you keep yourself from cranking it to 10 all should be fine in 8 ohms mode.
Just something to think about. Some manufacturers require inspection before return/replacement and if it’s obvious you were using it wrong they could refuse to comply.
Usually there is a brief note in the user manual about these methods of use.

          • @thebadmachine: The protection circuits in modern amps will shut the amp down if it gets too hot or if the impedance load gets too low, this will usually only happen when if you are driving 4 ohm seakers fairly hard or the speaker drops significantly below 4 ohms(some Klipsch speakers drop below 3 ohms even though they are rated as 8 ohm speakers by Klipsch, I have seen these cause problems for some users).
The impedance selector can prevent this by reducing the voltages so the amp won't run as hot but it also reduces the output power so you will not be able to drive the speakers as hard in the 4 ohm position.
If you want to get the best from the amp and speakers it should be left in the 8 0hm position, if the amp shuts down when driving the speakers hard then it is best to get a better amp that can supply more current and drive lower ohm speakers to their best.

            • @Blackrose: Thanks for your detailed explanation.
I just read in forums that the Yamaha amp can do a good (reliable) job of powering low-impedance speakers (I suspect due to this switch).

              • @thebadmachine: Yamaha do generally make very good products, I like the Yamaha gear over the other main brands available(i'm on my fourth Yamaha amp lol), they are good products that work well and have the best reliability in the industry.

  • Sorry guys for messing round with the edit. First time making a combined post from scratch.

  • The link to the Dali speakers only shows 2 speakers, not 3 :-(

Zensor 3 is the model, not the amount of speakers

  • Any one know much about these amp? I am running 5.1.4 atm with Atmos and have 2 spare speaker and would like to run 7.1.4. Since my current AVR Yamaha RX-3060 can do 7.1.4 but need an external amp like this one.

    Any one can recommend?

    • Yes it would work for what you want to do, though it is not ideal as you can not bypass the pre-amp section on this amp.
Some amplifiers have an input that bypasses the internal pre-amp, different brands use different terms for this input but is usually labelled something like, amp direct, processor, ht bypass or similar.
It would be better to get a power amp which has no pre-amp section or an amp like above that can bypass the pre-amp section.
If you're open to buying second hand you can get good amps at great prices.

      • Sorry failed to read mt2000’s comment properly. Their amp does support 7.1.4.

Regarding the bypass, the A-S301 does have ‘Pure direct’ mode which bypasses the EQ and loudness (pre-amp) circuits.

“The Pure Direct mode causes the music signals to travel the shortest possible circuit route, bypassing the buffer amp and the tone, loudness and balance controls to virtually eliminate any signal degradation for the purest sound quality.”

        • Yes that would be the best way to use this amp the way mt2000 wants to do.
If using for extra atmos channels that would be fine, if using for main L&R it would not be ideal although the pure direct does bypass the tone controls etc it still goes through the pre-amp section, so the signal would be running through two pre-amps.
The last few weeks I've been experimenting with running an oppo blu-ray player directly to a Yamaha power amp with no pre-amp in between them at all, it will now be staying that way for 2-channel audio, was previously going through a Yamaha RX-V3071 as a pre-amp with a separate Yamaha power amp.
Having a shorter signal path by not using a pre-amp made a good improvement to the sound especially in the upper frequencies.

@Blackrose: Hi thanks for your reply.
I completely agree with having shorter signal paths.
I think simpler setups with fewer components/connections are the way to go, although many Hi-Fi people may disagree (less things to tinker and experiment with).

  • Thanks guys

So what I need is a power amp.

    Cheers

    • Yes or an integrated amp with pre-amp bypass like described above however that feature tends to be mainly on more expensive amps, if you were willing to look at second hand gear you can save massively over new gear, my entire current system was purchased second hand at a massive discount to new prices.
