Dell is having 30% off selected XPS systems at the moment. Sale starts today and finishes on Sunday 15 May. This is what you can get for $1,119

XPS 15 Laptop

  • Intel Core i7-2630QM 2GHz Turbo Boost to 2.9GHz
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
  • 8GB DDR3 (2x 4GB)
  • 750GB 7200RPM HDD
  • 15.6" 1366x768 WLED Display with TrueLife (upgrade to Full HD for $198)
  • 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M
  • Blu-Ray BD-ROM + DVD/RW Combo Drive
  • Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030 with Bluetooth v3.0+HS
  • 6 Cell Battery
  • 2x USB 3.0

Just did a search on StaticICE for 15.6" laptops with Sandy Bridge i7, and it's hard to find a similar spec laptop that matches the price. Most people buying XPS 15 would go with Full HD (1920x1080) RGBLED upgrade though so you might want to factor that into the pricing.

Also a similar spec XPS 17 with 1TB 7200RPM drive, 3GB GeForce GT 555M Gfx, 9 Cell battery and 1600x900 17" display for $1,189 delivered.

Also don't forget about the cashback from MoneyBackCo. Regular discount coupons don't work though, as 10% will cancel the 30% off discount.

      the dell has better specs

      sony is overpriced. way overpriced.

    • You would only get a Vaio if you are a sony fanboi like apple people for apple.

  • nice! dell are pretty dependable laptops from my experience.

  • No VGA?

  • Great deal 30% shame I just got my Asus and have no need for another one, the last best deal was 20% with Inspiron 630M I got back then :)

Some tips for people buying this:
    - With either the XPS 15 or 17, get the upgrade to a full HD screen, especially on the 15 - 1366x768 is a dreadful resolution for a computer to have, especially for one as powerful as this, and it's the thing that makes dell massively better than the 1366x768 crap sold at Harvey Norman etc by other manufacturers, it is incredible they skimp on the screen on a quad core machine with 8GB RAM - you'll notice the screen much more than you notice those things.

    • the backlit keyboard for $20 is well worth it.

    • get rid of the Gizmo crap and save $25

    • the 17 is a massive laptop, don't buy if you plan to carry it around much.

    • the $198 upgrade to the B+RGLED screen on the XPS 15 gives you perhaps the best screen you can get on a laptop this side of $2000. I can't stress this enough. It's a good reason to choose the 15 over the 17, despite the slightly lower price and better graphics card on the 17.

    • What's the benefit of a backlit keyboard?

      • +1

It's easier to type in the dark.

      • Can also look pertier :)

    • +1

Definitely, I also stress this. for the XPS15, get the screen upgrade. Will look approximately a million better.

A quick note for those intending to use MBC to get 7% cashback on this deal.

If you've clicked through the link to Dell from here (and you weren't logged into OzBargain) you MUST clear your browser cookies BEFORE logging into your MBC account and then proceeding to the Dell store, otherwise your sale may be attributed to OzBargain and not MBC and you won't therefore receive your cashback.

    Thanks, Steve.

    • Does this only work on the products presented? Or will it also work on the XPS17?

    • hope mine went through. i cleared my cookies and started from MBC to dell in one go. i think i might have left an OB tab up though. didnt touch it so hopefully it didnt reload anything :(

edit: it looks like its thinking!

  • Just did a search on StaticICE for 15.6" laptops with Sandy Bridge i7, and it's hard to find a similar spec laptop that matches the price.

The normal price of the Inspiron 15R with the same CPU and marginally slower GT525M is $999, and there was an Acer with i7-2630Q and 2GB GT540M for $999 after cashback a couple of weeks ago (crappier brand but with a 3-year warranty) just to put things in perspective. I'd actually prefer a 525 GPU since the 540 gains you 15% performance at most, while increasing TDP from 25W to 35W.

So I don't think the CPU and graphics really set the $1119 deal apart. The 8GB RAM does add a bit to this deal, but whether it is a super bargain depends how much one values whatever advantages the XPS offers.

The $1189 deal looks a bit more compelling if a 17" is what you're after.

  • It was about time to replace my Core 2 Duo so I bought the XPS Desktop 8300:

    Processor Intel® Core™ i7-2600 Processor (3.4GHz, 8MB Cache)
    Memory 8GB (4X2GB) DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz Memory
    Video Card 1GB ATI® Radeon™ HD5770 Graphics

    Upgraded to:
Hard Drive 3TB (1.5TBx2) SATA RAID 0 (Data Striping)
    Wireless Solution Dell™ 1501 Wireless-N Mini PCI Card (802.11 b/g/n compliant)

    For $1,174.79 delivered

I think it is a very good price… very close to what it would have cost just to buy the components separately… but should be more stable and quiet
I'd recommend to stick to the default configuration to get the best rebate and consider replacing components (memory or video card) in a year or two if required.

The laptops were very tempting but already have 4 of them around including a Precision i7 16GB Quadro 2800 :)

    • Price well but the american is getting the 5870 instead of the 5770.

      • Yeah, that's not the perfect machine, but good value for money and will do for 2 years and will consider upgrading some components then

        • Hopefully the power supply can take the upgrade.

  • do you guys think its worth buying this now instead of waiting another 3-4months? i don't need a new computer just yet but will need one in about 3-4months time, and as far as computers go, 4months will change prices/specs quite a fair bit. what do you guys think? wait or buy now?

does dell do this often? anyone remember when and what the last offers were?

    thanks heaps guys

    • +2

I'm sure you'll get that kind of deal in 3-4 months as well… I bought now so will claim at the next tax return in July

    • Just ordered one - approximate deliver is just under a month ^^;

      • wow thats pretty long, do u live in a regional area?
or should all of us expect 1 month waiting

        • Yeah my expected arival date is at the start of June.

    • @lindiwei
As Dell offers 15% discount on their products on a regular basis, you could consider this as an extra 15% off (or about $240-$255 saving). However, they do offer a longer warranty period (2-3 years) from time to time which would effectively save you $90-$190. You're more likely to get a similar or better deal if you're prepared to wait a bit longer than 3-4 months. Hope this helps.

    • hmm, i havent been following dell's offers .
But atm, im opting to buy 3yrs warranty.

Im just curious, does the extended warranty offer come up much?

      • My two previous systems from Dell came with 3 years NBD warranty as standard. Even when it's an add-on, you'll find that the Reps have some leeway to include it in order to close a deal when the discount is not as big as 30% on paper.

Your other option is to ring them just before the 1 year warranty runs out and try to negotiate a two year extension at a reduced premium. As that is essentially a new sale, they'll be keen to win it, especially when sales are low.

        • ud have to send ur laptop in and get them 2 check it again right?

        • ud have to send ur laptop in and get them 2 check it again right?

No, this is no different to taking the extended warranty when the system is new and they're not interested in what condition your system is in. The only thing to remember is to do it before the warranty expires.

      • how much would that cost?
i cant seem to find extend warranty for the XPS systems

If its not much of a saving, id prob just buy the 3 yrs now

        • Not sure if this is of any help but they quoted me $880 for ONE year of complete warranty, though my XPS1530 is four years old.

        • You need to ring them. It all depends on how hard you drive a bargain and how keen or desparate the Rep is in getting the sale. If you have no luck with one, you can always try again a week or so later (provided that you don't leave it until too late).

Look at it this way - with the relentless pace in computer technology, a brand new $1500 system will be worth less than $1000 in a year's time as used. Let's say it costs $200 to extend the warranty to 3 years. That would represent 13% of the purchase price but 20% of the residue value. Whilst it's relatively easy to sell you a 3-year extended warranty now, it would be very hard to convince you or indeed anyone to pay $200 to extend the warranty of something that is worth less than $1000 for another 2 years. Rather than forking out $200, wouldn't you be tempted to ride your luck then? After all, if it breaks during the 2-year period you may be able to get it fixed for that amount, or in the worst case scenario, you stand to lose <$800 but there's always something better (in terms of function and value) to tempt you to part with your hard-earned dosh down the road. And if no bad luck befalls on you by the end of that same period, you'd have saved yourself $200 for the next new system (or for the extended warranty for it) ;)

        • @raptormesh
Not sure if this is of any help but they quoted me $880 for ONE year of complete warranty, though my XPS1530 is four years old.

Did you tell them to go fly a kite? But seriously, the crucial factor is your system was already out of warranty. Why bother with a 4-year old system?

A few months before the 2-year warranty of one of my previous XPS systems ran out, I rang tech support for some issues and they were trying to sell me another 2 years of extended warranty. When I declined the offer, the prices kept coming down until eventually it bottomed out at about $70.

        • ah damn, wished u had said that earlier.
i thought the savings would be small ~ 50 bucks.

already bought the 3 yr warranty.

is that kindda savings normal for a 2yr old laptop? or were u one of the few which got a good deal

        • @Earlybird

I think it has something to do with the fact that my XPS have an issue with the GPU(the vaunted Nvidia fault) and they said they had to replace my motherboard. Sorta laughed at the number he quoted me and opted to take advantage this sale instead. Got him to throw in two years of warranty for free as well.

  • Anyone know how much these weigh?

I've looked at the dell site but cant find it.

    • +1

      XPS 15:
      Weight: Starting weight of 5.96lbs (2.70kg)* with 6-cell battery; 6.33lbs (2.87kg)* with 9-cell battery

      XPS 17:
      Weight: Starting at 3.36kg / 7.41lbs (with 6-cell battery); 3.53kg/ 7.79lbs (with 9-cell battery)

Just ordered the XPS 17 with a few upgrades, service rep was really nice and helpful and got me a nice discount. Didn't go through MoneyBackCO because I wasn't sure if it'd register and I you can't get a service rep discount and use the MoneyBackCo on the same order because I had to pay over the phone.

      • how much discount?

when i was tlaking to the sales rep, she only gave me 17. so i went with cashback

        • I got about a $70 discount all up (he gave me a cheaper extended warranty + $20 off the original price). Even with that, the Moneybackco would have given me about $100 (not sure how it works with GST etc.) but I figured for an approx ~$30 loss I would just order it via Dell and not run the risk of the sale not registering with Moneybackco or whatever.

        • i just spoke to another dell rep, he mentions the discounts they give are in the form of coupons as well.

They might stack with the 7% cashback

njnninja, ive been getting shit luck with the reps today. He says if i can get ur order number he can match it for me. can i get ur order number pls

also what upgrades did u get on which laptop (15/17)

        • You're right, it might stack with the 7% cashback, but as far as I know from the other reports, as soon as you apply another coupon, the $510 cashback disappears. IE, the Dell discounts don't stack.

        • no it wont stack, just confirmed it. U have to email the rep back and pay over the phone and shit.
          He said its a "coupon"…sighs

so unless i can get a saving of ~100 from dell, i think cashbackco might be better

ps- njnninja could i get the ordernumber off u and ur upgrades thx [rep only offered me 40]

        • Yeah that's right, you need approx $100 discount to match Moneybackco. My ~$70 discount was a bit less than $100 but for $30 more I don't have to worry about going through Moneybackco and waiting for the cashback.

I ordered the XPS 17 with Full HD Upgrade, TV Tuner, 3 Year Warranty, everything else standard.

        • could i get the quote number or order number off u?

should have been emailed to u. \

I need it to match. i keep getting really tight reps

        • What upgrades are you trying to get? The one I spoke to said they can't do much lower if you're not getting any upgrades, but as soon as you start adding more then they can knock off some $. If you change your account to accept emails on OzB I will email you the order.

        • ok i just changed it. pls email it to me thx

thats the 3rd rep i spoke to ( this time over the phone) only got 20-30 off

this is so depressing, im trying not to use the cashbackco as much as possible.

but looks like i might have to

        • Just emailed you. Hopefully you can get it cheaper. If not, just use MoneybackCo if the 7% is larger than the discount you're getting.

        • thanks alot, will try my luck again

        • Dell $1357.26 $95.01 Tracking Jul-2011

so 95.01 cash back for me hopefully :)

        • hmm, im not 100% about the cash bank thing. Bit sketchy

i managed to get a $80 off deal from the rep, i will prob give the cash back a miss.

let me know if u want my quote number so u can haggle down ur prices a bit.

        • @VRZ can you provide me your quote number for your order.
          Thanks.

  • what sort of discount you mean..

  • Just got off the phone with a rep, he gave an extra 2 year warranty for the two 15s I bought.

    • wow thats pretty good. u got pretty lucky i think

  • Lol I noticed something in the Inspiron 15R config list:

    12.7" SATA tray load DVD+/-RW

It comes with a foot long DVD drive. Dayum.

  • Anyone have any thoughts on the m14x getting a sale like this?

    • Alienware sales to seem to be rare to the point of being almost non-existant :(

      • Ah, that sucks. Note for anyone interested, when I clicked through from Moneybackco it informed me Alienware's actually have a 9% off discount, rather than 7%. A better discount is a better discount :P

And, ordered an XPS 15! Major excited now.

        • Order from last night has registered on MBC. Estimated payment date is August. Lol. (And discount was off the pre-GST price FYI)

        • And now it's coming 2 weeks early! Estimated I'll get it ON MY BIRTHDAY! I love it when stuff works nicely.

        • Same, got a call today saying it'll be coming in next Wednesday, something like 2 weeks earlier than what I was originally told. CANNOT COMPLAIN.

  • Alright looks like this might be my next laptop.
How are the majority of people getting discounts?
What do you guys recommend? Moneybackco or should I call them up?
    Thanks

  • Just ordered xps 15. Had been looking for FHD for a while. This was just too good to miss.
I can finally get rid of crappy 768p.
    Hopefully MBC will track.
Got 1 year extended warranty via platinum credit card.

  • Speaking of warranty, what do you think the average failure rate during 3 years of heavy use? 1 in 50? or less?

I probably should have extended my warranty, but cannot really afford any extras.

    • +2

Remember you can extend it later as long as it's within the active warranty period. So if you have a spare 100 bucks in a year's time you can extend the warranty for another one (or possibly less if you play hardball with Dell) ;)

  • Delivery next Tuesday. looking good.
