500

The High Life and American Express have launched an exclusive offer of 100,000 bonus Velocity Points with the American Express Velocity Platinum Card: Amex’s top Velocity card.

To get this deal, you must apply via The High Life website - it's not available anywhere else.

100,000 bonus Velocity Points is enough to fly to Asia or the USA in economy return or one way in business class (plus taxes and fees).

The Amex Velocity Platinum Card is arguably Australia’s most rewarding Velocity credit card. Benefits include:

  • a complimentary Virgin Australia domestic economy return flight between selected cities each year (the list of eligible routes is on our website)
  • earn 1.25 Velocity Points per dollar spent on everyday purchases – plus an additional 0.25 points per $1 spent until 14 April 2019
  • 2 Virgin Australia and 2 American Express lounge entries each year
  • earn 100 Velocity Status Credits when you spend $50,000 in a year
  • complimentary domestic and overseas travel insurance
  • up to 4 complimentary additional cards for family members.

Minimum income: $65,000 per annum
Minimum spend: $3,000 within the first 3 months
Annual fee: $375

To be eligible for the bonus points, you must not have held a credit card issued directly by Amex Australia in the last 18 months. Note that you are eligible if you’ve held an Amex card issued by a bank.

This offer is only available through The High Life website (and not by going to Amex directly or using a referral link) until 4 April 2019.

Happy travels!

It's a high annual fee when the list of available cities for the flight are highly restricted (compared to say the ANZ Travel Adventures card) and you don't get the travel credit like other Amex cards.. still 100k points is tempting

    • +2

$375 is a fair price for a return domestic. $225 on the ANZ Travel Adventures is a much more compelling offer though. ANZ might have more flexible origin/destination combinations but the requirement to book 60 days in advance is restrictive. Also I think you can sell the Amex flight which should more than cover the annual fee. I don't think any card offers both a flight and travel credit so not sure what the point was there.

      • can't sell the anz flight either

        • Can or can't?

          • +2

@bio: Cant. Has to be in your name (unlike amex).

  • would this be similar to this ( expired ) deal?

    • We weren't aware of this deal! Thanks for clarifying. But yes it's essentially the same.

  • +2

Just want to point out that the highest velocity points earn rate in fact goes to the Diners Club/MC combo:

    Decent deal however, +1 vote

Tip: Add outline.com/ to the start of the address to bypass adblock restriction

      • +1

Nice tip! As an alternative you can also simply disable javascript as javascript is how they pop up those annoyances. In Chrome or Opera you click the padlock and go into settings.

    • Assuming you can actually use the DC card somewhere :D That is a good rate though. ANZ Rewards Black is effectively 1 point/dollar, but given that they have (for several years) run a bonus stacked on top of a Velocity bonus in November if you can hold off until then you do get 1.5/$ and on a card you can use almost anywhere.

  • I am going to apply, smash out the spend then as soon as I get the bonus points, transfer the points to krisflyer before the point devaluation in April.

    • +6

      It's already devalued.

      • +2

he/she's talking amex - krisflyer but i think this deal is only velocity points anyway.. so you're right

    • +1

      Happened Jan 1 2019

    • +1

Devaluation has already started since 1 Jan 2019 AMEX devaluation starts in April 2019

Get them to remove the 18month exclusivity clause and you will have 100s signup here

    • Yeah I just got my first Amex card last week (explorer 100,000 MR points), looking for another card maybe a bank one before devaluation.

  • Could I ask how it compares to this one?

    • +2

      Yes

    • One is an AMEX and one isn't. Report back with your findings.

      • After searching high and low. Also using my expert comparison skills (2012 bachelor of bullshit) I have come to the expert opinion that this card The AmEx Velocity Platinum Card does not give a better deal than the one mentioned above thus rendering this deal normal and nothing special

        • +1

Up to 90,000 Velocity Points, receive 30,000 bonus points for every month you spend $3,000 or more in the first 3 months

So it's spend 6K more to get less 10K less points over 3 months - it's a terrible deal Richard!

This is just the first comparison point. I think you should apply for a cashback refund for your comparison skills bachelor of BS!!

          • @John Dough: Annual fee lower
            Mozza88 - 1
            John Dough - 1
But I also believe if you are willing to scam the system the extra 6K isn't really a issue. Now lets take back your point.
            Mozz88 - 1
            John Dough - 0
NO REFUNDS on comparison skill courses

            • @Mozzlah: hehe..
with the high flyer (which I have) you also get a $129 voucher for virgin which you can use or sell for a slightly lower price.

              • @bohn: Mozz88 and Bohn - 2
                John Dough - 0
                Game set match

                • @Mozzlah: btw you can apply for the high flyer and the flyer and get the points for both (without an exclusion period).
I'm going to close the high flyer and get the flyer soon.

This is not an "exclusive" offer. I got an invite from Amex a few weeks ago inviting me to join up. I already had a Qantas Amex, but they didn't seem to care (the conditions never restricted it). Just check your postbox, they're really trying to promote Velocity over Qantas because they have a very favorable arrangement with them.

    • Agree. I was offered this same deal directly from Amex last week.

    • Did you get offered the 100k despite already having an amex as well?

I called and asked for 100k to upgrade but was told they never offer that much.

However they did give me $100 off the annual fee ongoing

      • Did you get offered the 100k despite already having an amex as well?

Yep, which was really weird. It's the first time I've received something like this in over a decade of on-and-off relationship with Amex.

        • If your Qantas Amex is the Westpac Altitude Black one then it doesn't affect eligibility for other Amex sign up bonuses (according to pointhacks).

For existing American Express cardholders of other cards issued by Amex such as the American Express Explorer or Qantas Ultimate American Express, the Westpac card isn’t considered for bonus points eligibility purposes—we have been informed by Westpac that holding an American Express-issued card would not preclude you from earning the bonus points on a Westpac American Express card.

I assume this works in both directions, it's just treated the same as the old bank issued Amexes were.

          • +1

@ely: Nope, Amex issued Qantas Ultimate.

            • @antler: That is surprising then.

  • Would AmEx cardholders who are additional or secondary cardholders also be excluded from the offer?

    • I've yet to come across a case where they were, so I'm going to go with "no, they're eligible".

      • +1

Yes additional / secondary cardholders are eligible for the bonus points.

        • Wait, just so I understand the question, if you are an existing secondary card holder on someone elses primary account, but then apply for your own card, you ARE eligible - is that right?
Or is it the secondary card holder can also get another 100K bonus points if they also spend 3K on their card?

Pretty sure you mean the first point, but just checking just in case.

          • +1

            @John Dough:

if you are an existing secondary card holder on someone elses primary account, but then apply for your own card, you ARE eligible - is that right?

            Yes.

  • Anyone know if you can apply for this card if your partner is on a 801 Partner Visa?

  • Does anyone know if this card has no foreign transaction fees?

    • +1

All Amex cards including this one have a 3% fee.

  • so just confirming we can sell this flight?

  • Hey OP….any info if there will be a future flight option for Perth-hobart

    • We don't have any insights into this unfortunately. New routes are occasionally added to the list though, so it's possible.

      • Thanks for coming back to me

Darn….it would make the decission a no brainer for me
